Because in the early 80s no-one wanted them and they were stupidly cheap. Therefore they were seen as ripe for modifications. These days no-one would really bat an eyelid at doing this to an SX or Sue Ryder. These 70s Gibsons were seen in the same way back then. Anyone with any money bought an Ibanez or an Aria Pro II.
