So other than the tuners, shape of the scratchplate, pickup and bridge, isn't this just a rebadged Bronco albeit a hundred quid more expensive?

Don't get me wrong I've wanted a Mustang for years but that's a huge difference in price for a few changes. I really hope I'm wrong and there's more to it than that

Different body wood too, I doubt it will have the same neck as the Bronco either but time will tell.

I think it's unlikely - CIJ /MIJ is predominantly produced for the internal market, not the export trade. Although what the internal market is going through given the Tsunami and following events I have no idea.

Don't know what the Mustang would be like but I'll admit I am a Squier fan. I have a Vintage Modified Jaguar (see Gear Porn) which, with a few tweaks, is fabulous. I would expect a Mustang to be just as good.
The thing is, the companies who also make the top quality and top priced guitars simply cannot - and will not - risk their reputation by making rubbish entry-level guitars. As such, the low end Yamahas, Squiers, Ibanezs, etc, while built to a budget, are very very well made bits of kit. ~Bit of a set up tweak here and a hardware change there and you have a fantastic value for money result
