That's probably more important than having a mint 100% original relic for some collector to keep in it's case in some warehouse in Slough. In the old days when I was racing bikes, and before titanium and carbon, guys used to do things like that to hardware. That;s until people started having very nasty crashes as equipment started collapsing. I don't mind it. If you can't see it or hear it, it ain't there. When he did that to his own bass, it was a cheap old thing in poor nick, which he probably couldn't give away. By modifying it drastically (but invisibly) he prolonged its life as a useful instrument. I'm not trying to be all po-faced here. The whole "Didn't he realise ..." thing is 20/20 hindsight. At the time, [i][b]nobody [/b][/i]realised what these would be worth one day. Just like the sad kid at school who kept his Dinky toys in their original packaging. What a prat, eh? I seriously doubt it made much difference to the weight anyway - hence the stupidity of disfiguring the bass (whatever it was/is worth). bassaussie Posted March 9, 2011 Share Posted March 9, 2011 When I see mods to old Fenders, I always try to take into account the fact that it's only been the last few years that they've become these collectible pieces, and that the owners back then just did what they thought would make the bass more usable for them. But this one really makes me cringe. I can see what he was going for, and he's achieved that, but it's just such a radical measure to have taken on an otherwise beautiful bass. If you saw someone gigging it you wouldn't know what was under there! Tbh it's a gigging bass and has been modded by an amateur to ensure it's working life was extended. The fella bought the bass and it's his do do with as he wishes, whether he acheived his goal in making the bass more comfortable is up for debate, but the bridge mod is a practical one which no doubt improved the intonation. They're just planks of wood with metal on, not even particularly high quality or well constructed ones either. Not every early Fender has to be a piece of bass history, some will live out their days on stages where they belong until their necks warp, the truss rods snap and the bridges corrode.
