Great fretless tone - share your links

I've never been a fan of the 'mwah' of the fretless, but like some other aspects:

For spaced out sliding harmonics, something a bit different, I like this clip from a fellow BCer;

I also like the percussive funkiness that the decreased sustain of a fretless can help provide:

Gary Willis is the daddy

btw - I saw Alain Caron playing with Mike Stern a few years back, and thoroughly enjoyed his playing

I'm not so sure about Percy ...
Yeah, Percy has never had a great sound IMO, he spends too much time plucking near the neck with no bite or definition, just that awful farty sound. If he's just play nearer the bridge with a bridge pickup maybe he'd sound better.

I love this sound - any idea what effects, if any, are being used???

In all the times I heard this on a low quality sounding radio I never really heard the bass properly till I ran it through my Hi-Fi, Bass is quite low in the mix (i'm assuming it is a proper bass being the 80's it could be anything though :) ) I do get confused though with all the sound effects on it, sounds like an upright at the end so I could be wrong. Great song anyway
Any how, Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush Don't Give Up
...Gary Willis.... It's just astonishing technically.
Agreed. But I also think that it's buttock-clenchingly dull. Technique for the sake of technique. Fair enough if it's played at a trade show (which it seems to be) but otherwise, what exactly is the target market for this type of shredding? :)

...maybe in places.

I'm still jealous of that technique, though. My fingers just don't work like his! I tried following his instructions from the Youtube tutorials a while ago. After about 10 minutes I realised I just didn't stand a chance.

I like the drumming, the bass is being played in place of a horn, it's for BassDay after all. I also thought it was dull. Very little of interest compositionally, it's simply bass being played like a horn. Bass is a horrible instrument for this type of soloing. I've never liked it, it seemed devoid of any real emotion to me, it wasn't improvised either as far as I can tell. It's miles away from Rubber Shirt in terms of musical interest. Amazing as far as technique goes of course.

10 minutes? Of course you don't stand a chance in 10 minutes! How long do you think it takes to get chops like that together, never mind the conceptual learning necessary. What aim did you have in mind when trying to learn it?
