Not pre-CBS, but it's the tail-end of a great era.

I'm sure Mark is open to negotiations...
Yep, also a decent list price given Mark will know he's going to get knocked down a bit. Lovely bass even if it is a Jazz!

CBS bought Fender in 1965, so this a decade too late for pre-CBS. Lovely looking bass all the same!
Tis a bit steep, especially in this current financial climate. Nice looking bass though
It'll sell mate, folks like a nice 3tsb Jazz with rosewood/block board. Economy? A lot of guys seems to think that whilst the climate has really hurt high-priced (e.g, pre-CBS) Fenders, it seems to have helped the mid priced market along a bit.

Seems to be in really good condition, way too steep on the price though. Strung out guitars have two Jazzes from the same time period, in a fairly similar condition, priced £1399 and £1899 http://www.strungoutguitars.com/Electric/. If I was heading to Bass Direct armed with £3000, I'm not too sure I would really be heading out with a vintage Jazz, and I'm a big vintage Fender fan.

On second thoughts though, the original case and instruction manual is not something you see everyday, and I'm assuming would add a fair bit to the price. Regardless of everything else though, its a vintage Fender, somebody will buy it.

it is cbs era, cbs took over in '65, anything before that is known as pre cbs.

Its in great condition and is an earlyish model when you think late 70's models fetch near £2000 and anything before '67 will get nearer £4000
However, it is a bit snide mentioning CBS in the description of the bass, when it is the one thing Fender buyers will look out for.
Some may not realise the connection between pre and post CBS.
Clearly :)

Fair point Steve, but FFS, if you're spending £3000 and you don't do your homework, you get what you deserve. He's stated dates clearly, and the info is correct.

But yeh, see your point

But, to be fair, this is CBS era. CBS owned Fender from 1965 to the mid eighties so this is slap bang in the middle of CBS. By saying its CBS he's actually making it clear its not a more collectable / valuable pre-CBS.

You seriously think he's being underhand mentioning CBS in the ad? When the bass is clearly in the CBS timeframe?

Wow.
That is unreal nick for a '74 - the poly coat looks unfaded and no major dings. Can't have seen a lot of use. And a the last of the 4-bolt neck plates. Even still, heavy as f*** and way overpriced, IMO.
Where is the weight mentioned? Have I missed something?

True Simon, I think it only came up on the thread because mention of CBS in the listing had clearly confused the OP. The convention, ironically when you think about it, has been to use the term 'CBS' only when talking pre-CBS instruments! That's the first time I've seen it used in relation to a 70's instrument, but there's clearly no attempt to mislead as it's dated '74.

BTW, I saw a '62 RI listed as pre-CBS a few years back!

Fair point Chris. As you say, though, I don't think there's any intention to mislead here.
Is it normal for the machine heads to look so dull and oxidised in a Fender of this age? Or is that some kind of "custom finish"? :)
My 74 jazz has this same "aged" oxidation of the machine heads. Must be normal for this period I suppose.
