lojo Posted October 17, 2010 Share Posted October 17, 2010 The covers thread has me realize that Id love to do originals again, I have the offer, but the style is not really what I want to be doing and time is precious So wondering what would be your ideal originals band if you could form one based on your own unique take on it, or indeed are you lucky enough to be doing just that? My last band was very country, my current lot is very Americana. I like the idea of doing Stonesy type stuff one minute & Dylan the next. That can be from a playing aspect so when you go to a bridge or the chorus the song goes up a notch or from a vocal angle where a really catchy melody kicks in and lifts the song. Singer plays guitar (Acoustic & Godin midi synth thingy) banjo, percussion & keys, there's a mandolinist that also plays ukulele, bohdran & spoons, and the drummer willingly switches to playing sampled beats & keys. I even play some guitar in the band! We do just about every style of music & I'm trying to talk em into doing some DnB & dubstep (I'm trying to disguise it as jazz or fusion ). Songs would all be 12 minutes long minimum and most would just have one crescendo that is built up to for the first two thirds of the track. LOADS of tremolo guitar playing (reverb essential). [/quote] Haha, apart from ruthlessly hunting down every Post-Rock group I can possibly find to get into, I've actually avoided even listening to Godspeed for years, and I couldn't tell you why either. I did have 'Mono', 'Gregor Samsa' and 'red sparowes' (who I saw last sunday) in mind when I was typing that paragraph though. I'm trying to get a few mates off their arses and form a grindcore/ drone/ noise/ post rock band; Drums, drum machines, synths, bass, guitars, noise stuff etc. No one member is stuck playing one instrument for a gig, semi structured songs that allow improvisation. Bassassin Posted October 17, 2010 Share Posted October 17, 2010 I think I kind of am in my perfect 'riginals band - although things would be improved massively by a drummer who would play what the songs need, add their own touches of flamboyance & brilliance - and actually be available to play a bloody gig or two! AndyTravis Posted October 17, 2010 Share Posted October 17, 2010 I'm happy with our band at the moment, it's fairly dark country/indie stuff, but i'm allowed to play however i wish, i don't overplay whatsoever, but i'm often encouraged to play things a normal Manchester indie outfit would hate. Luckily, the lads are open to me using whatever i need to do to add my 'layer' to the song, wether that be Cliff Williams root note pumping, or Brian Ritchie style chordal acoustic bass. Slap is banned however, not that i would, but i've been told once during a jam, and i won't be doing it again, haha. I'd love to have a go at a modern British soul/funk band, but Jamiroquai (amongst others) cornered that market and now it's a bit old (cat in a) hat. So that shall remain a pipe dream.
