Amp for upright sound from a fretless bass guitar?
Prime_BASS replied to Rob MacKillop's topic in Amps and Cabs
As long as the amp gives a good transparent sound then you have to change things on the bass. Strings, playing style, mutes? An amp can't really make you sound like an upright, EQ and the above will. -
New,ish Fender Jazz on the way.. Audere pre installed..PICS WOW
I very nearly almost bought the very same bass a few months ago from 4 Candles but was left in a bit of a financial pickle in the end. I've got to say, after Daphne/Sonic Blue, Surf Green is my favourite old Fender Finish
Do they not do these finishes on any of the standard/current models? -
Its the intonation pins being (after Market) too long not the pads being too high
Indeed. Mark at bass direct sorted me out with correct sized intonation screws and now the bridge is in one with the string mutes, looks great and sound great with flats. Very nice!!!!

So it's early 90s, a MIJ and seafoam green/surf green. My guess would be a 62reissue. The strip towards the bridge and bridge pickup along with the screw hole above the neck pickup gives it away plus the pickups definatly look 60s spacing. -
I have a Little Mark iii and have found I need to run it with the gain up really high to get enough volume out of it, just wondering of this is normal? I'm using a barefaced midget and compact but don't always use them both together, playing with 2 guitarists using 1x12 100w combos and a not hugely loud drummer.
Well with the 18volt preamp of the big al the gain on my old LMTube was only just above 9 o'clock. And my stingray not much Higher. In the manual it will say how to set the input gain right. I doubt that you will need much more volume as I found the midget plenty loud on it own with 300watts into it.

Personally I prefer bass direct. I'm still waiting on a gig Skinz bag I ordered before crimbo maybe I should give em a call?
It's those lightweight basses that really gets my goat. You know, the ones with the short necks and 6 strings
Thats where I was going wrong for so many years. Pesky treble guitars.
Definitely want to consider the Promethean. Light, small, good price, and ive heard like you say the quality is high. I dont want to spend £1000 on a combo or £600 on a neo cab when you can get good sounding ones like this for £500+.
The Barefaced midget is a route and at around 9kg you won't find anything as good for as little or as light. And Im sure you have a head somewhere to match with it. Although I'd like to try that turning up with a DI in my pocket and playing, I just don't like the idea of my sound being controlled by speakers/PA cabs I didn't choose. I'm such a control freak.
On the issue of noisy basses, my 2EQ Ray that is being replaced is/was quite buzzy and noisy for a Ray. Definitely a grounding/shielding issue.
Tbh my 3 EQ ray buzzes but depends how close the strings are to the pickup for some reason. But it's not too noisy if you understand, I live with it because I love my ray. I only started hated the noise when I had the jag because I started hating the bass overall.

What are really unfashionable at the moment?
Must say that in the last few years of gigging I have not seen many Musicman's about, but I have seen a few Warwicks. In terms of amps I don't see much Trace Elliot about either, new or second hand stuff. Standard rigs I see are Fender jazz design being played through an Ashdown Mag or ABM head. If not that then its a P bass and a Hartke, or Laney RB stuff.
Obviously never been to my gigs. I use a ray with my markbass head. That said the way MB s/h gear prices are at the monent I'd say they arent too favoured. People do want EBMM but not at a high price. -
Don't get me wrong, I had for a while cause I liked it sound, it was really light too. It is a good alternative to a jazz but with it sounding exactly the same. And if you do have a good one where the pre-amps pots a more tapered then with some good strings you can coax a Marcus miller esque sound out of it, and in passive it'll still do the Jaco burpy sound aswell. However for the price it should have come with a better preamp, but it was solidly built. Also for the neck was a little too thin.

I can only give praise about my super12T. The sound is huge, sounds perfect for me, I don't even put any EQ on my amp head and barely any on my basses. I found the size a little cumbersome compared to the midget (buts that's tiny) however it's the biggest cab I've owned and at 19kg even I find it easy to lift, it's not wheels on the back for easy moving which is good. I can still get it on a bus and have my huge sound with me.

I gigged mine while I had a for a year. In reality it was no noisier than any other bass, however in active or in temperamental conditions it will buzz like nothing else. Personally I think it's lack of shielding and cheap battery box. If you tap the battery box it makes lots of noise. At high volume it's again temperamental, depending on the proximity of power supplies etc. IMO it would fair better with a high quality preamp but trying to change it is more bother than what I thought was worth. However Monk is going to be here soon.....

I would like a status, I'm only 21... -
My 95 ray, although I love the big al, they'll never be a ray like mine.
Female, admitting to 'over 40'. 4 string - just learning. Influenced by my teacher who is great and has very wide ranging tastes. Will be venturing out of the bedroom in June. A friend is indulging me by letting me play on a couple of his original songs at a little charity gig. Kind of country and western feel. Gonna keep it VERY simple in an effort not to make too much of a tit of myself. Absolutely NO chance of soloing in the foreseeable future!
You never know. I remember when I first started spanking a treble guitar, I practiced for 2 hours a day at least for 6 months. The confidence thing is a whole other thing. I still get nervous 8 years on.

I'm surprising, apparently!? That's what majority of compliments are at gigs. I do my best to keep the low end going but being melodic at the same time.
Me at a recent gig. Shame the top of my head has been cut off, but it hasn't got much hair on it anyway so probably just as well
Nice rig in the background. -
First: Epiphone thunderbird through a Marshall MB4210. Now: EBMM Stingray through a Markbass LM Tube with a Barefaced super12T Vastly different but I'm also moving on the markbass to afford a RH750

Carousel by blink-182 This song helped develop my whole take on writing songs and writing basslines.

It's a shame most companies arnt like this. Im sure if I went straight to EBMM with my intonation screw issue i would have been told to jog on!
