1.
I think Fender Jazz Basses are incredibly hit and miss though - I've played loads of post-2012 American Standards now and I'd say the hit rate is around 1 in 5 for finding a good one and maybe 1 in 15 for one I'd actually buy. Whenever i go to Absolute Music in Poole, I always grab their US Standards and am always amazed at how Fender can make the same model bass with such big differences in feel, weight and sound. I played a red/RW, OW/RW, black/RW and 3TSB/RW US Standard a couple of Sunday's back and I'd personally class all four as duds. The OW/RW, red/RW and black/RW all sounded a bit rubbish while the 3TSB/RW sounded great but weighed 11lb 4oz. Thankfully the gent who bought my 2013 US Standard kindly agreed to sell my old bass back to me.
Here is your problem - the OW/maple are the best sounding American Standards.
2. Back to your original question to which I don't know the answer to - why not turn it off when it's not being used? Sorry, not trying to be a smart arse just curious why you would leave it left on when it's not being used?
3.
Or hit them with it, it's none of their business
Yes - hit 'em for six!
4. ELO - Alone in the Universe. Edit - sorry totally missed the point of the thread - please ignore me - it's been a long day.
5.
UFO - Walk On Water.
Yes indeed! A cracking album and as good as their earlier classic material.
6. That looks fantastic - well played sir.

8.
Mr Zed - glad you are still living the dream!
Oh yes - still mightily impressed every time I use them. One of the most important and enjoyable musically related purchases I have ever made. Wouldn't be without them.
9. I use them - the rest of the band don't. I'm protecting my hearing, they are not. I get CD quality sound at a nice comfortable volume with a great personal mix - they don't. I can hear everything clearly - they complain they can't hear the vocals/guitars whatever - usually they complain that they can't hear themselves so they turn up. I just smile a smug little smile. I have to lug my bass amp & cabs around and set them up so they can hear the bass but that's not an issue. I set the bass volume on stage how they want and set it in my ears how I want. If another band member wants to talk to me about something while we're playing I just point to my ears and they soon get the message. Been using them for a couple of years now - wish i'd done it sooner. Oh and we play pubs/small clubs. I don't think I look a knob whilst wearing them but I suppose that's for others to decide - I don't give a monkeys as i'm happy in my own little bit of audio heaven.
10. Met up with Si on Saturday morning and bought a double bass from him. He took the time to give me some pointers while I was there (this being my first foray into the DB world). Great guy to deal with. Deal with in confidence. Thanks for your time Si.
11. I like it as it is - it's like the bass porn section for me. I enjoy browsing and every now and then something comes up that sets my gas off. Oh hang on....!
12. I've now had a good read through Skol's excellent beginner's guide and this has answered a lot of questions. Really torn between the presonus itwo and the focusrite 2i4. I like the pad on the input to the 2i4 to keep the gains in check which the presonus doesn't have but I like the interface with an ipad on the presonus. If I go for the presonus I won't bother with the studio pack because I will upgrade the mic anyway. First choice is a Rode NT1A vocal pack. Decisions decisions.
13. Thanks for the replys. Some more research is obviously necessary and I really appreciate your valued input. What I'm looking to do is vocals and bass then using plug-ins for drums and guitar (if that's possible). Keys will be a 1 fingered affair as I'm no keyboard player. I can lay my hands on an electric guitar and/or acoustic to add parts when this suits. I will be working alone most of the time but will on occasion get other band members around to record. Whenever I've been in the studio we have always recorded one instrument at a time so a single input should suffice for this. For live drums I was thinking of using our live mixing desk then taking a stereo feed through the speaker outs then into the audio interface through the 2 inputs. Fully appreciate what you are both saying about the monitors. Maybe something to be considered as a later purchase (if at all). Hope this helps explain what I'm trying to achieve.
14. Hi all - I'm looking to start unleashing my creative side and do some home recording. Never done this before but this is something that has been on my mind to try for a while. I have a budget of around £500 and will be wanting to use my existing windows based laptop. This is not the best spec in the world but I'm hoping it will be ok to start me off. It has a core i5 processor & 6gb of ram. Currently running windows 7. I'm guessing this will be ok? To get me going, is this the best bang for your buck or does anyone have any better suggestions? 15.
Not bass related, but after having a golf lesson the pro advised me to cut 2 inches off the shaft of each of my clubs. Will that make me play better? I asked. No, he said, but they would be easier to fit in the bin.....
This reminds me of a time we were in the studio. We were recording the drums and the engineer asked our drummist if he had a case for his new China cymbal. Drummist who was very proud of his new purchase said yes. Engineer said great - put it in there then. We still bring this little gem up with him from time to time.
16. It's funny - but I always think of Slade when I'm in Wolverhampton.
17. Best advice I was ever given was "if you can hum it, you can play it".

19. Been meaning to do this for a while. Here's my little collection. 20. Yes - and if you don't like it you can send it back for a full refund. This will allow one of us to buy it as a deko for £20. Seriously though, I bought a Harley Benton 5 string progressive Deko and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Can't comment on the pb50 but I really like the looks. Well worth a risk-free punt.
21. Apologies for the obvious answer but play as many as you can and choose the bass that feels right for you. I found a great 2012 American Standard. I tried loads out and the one I chose just spoke to me. If you do try them out, you will notice a perceptible difference from instrument to instrument. I particularly like the nice touches on the American models such as the string through body, high mass bridge and the rolled fretboard edges. It feels like a classy bass and the build quality is superb. You may find you prefer a particular Mexican bass. For me, I like the passive tone I get from the custom shop pups but my active needs are met with my Musicman basses. You could try an American Deluxe (or whatever they've started calling them now). This gives you the option of active or passive and they are a fantastic bass but it will push your budget if you buy new. I think they still do a Mexican version but this may be just active - someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Whatever you decide to go for - enjoy the process of trying out as many as possible.
22.
Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. I didn't count the hours I put into it, so whatever I end up getting for it - if at all - I don't think would be great as an "hourly rate" - though art isn't supposed to be like that. It's the first painting I've done in many years, I usually do pencil stuff. Taking the water from the Mersey......the water I have left over is still in the same bottle with a layer of green slime in the bottom
And this proves it - they even nick the water!
23.
Im from liverpool, born and bred.... I dont know anyone who is caught up in its past or more accuratley the beatles ??? I think this is the stereo typical perception that most people outside the area have... Add to that we're all theives with curly hair and tashes... Take a single element of historical notoriety, use that as your assciated (limited) knowledge of a place and conclude the locals obsess over one thing , simply because thats the expanse of your own knowledge ? Liverpool, capital of culture, filled with diversity, filled with history, the international hub and supply chain which indistrilised Britain. Yes, There is a commercial element to the beatles continuing popularity in liverpool, but you will find that supply is only ever met by demand. Its not too different from most other cities on the whole, each of which will likley have their own commercial market. Ask any kid round our way the best thing to come out of liverpool and they'll say steven Gerrard. Chances are theyve never heard the beatles..... Not looking for a response or trying to provoke anyone, just a veiw from the inside looking out. For the record, most of my fave beatles tracks if i played them to most scousers they would even know it was the beatles. Ja garu deva om, nothings gonna change my world.
He He - you mentioned the words stereo and thieving in the same sentence. This word association made me laugh.
