  1. I was planning on just knocking the gloss off and painting over the red as yes, some finishes put up a real fight! That's good to know, I think I would rather go to 18mm as that seems to fit far better. Will either go for that cheap bridge I suggested above or hold out for a Schaller/Hipshot
  2. You missed the part where put brand new Elixirs on for the test, took them off and put them in a packet for a year. There are too many variables to say which has the most impact though.
  3. I'm sure we are all guilty of buying/trying basses and it not sounding good or blaming our gear for us sounding bad. It's a 30min watch but it's quite interesting with some pretty respected opinions and some things I hadn't thought about regarding how the aging process affects an instrument. The bit where the artificially add vibration is questionable but the comparisons do sound different to me. TLDW: Skip to 18:44 to see the comparisons. So, do you agree? Do basses you bought brand new sound better after years playing?
  4. But yes, this a good option. Please buy it so it stops teasing me 😅
  5. I had the original SUB 5 string which I thought was solid enough. Earlier this year in tried a SUB directly against the Sterling and if you can afford it, it is a nicer bass that you won't be itching to upgrade parts on, particularly this bridge which is far nicer on the Sterling. Don't get me wrong the SUB is a Stingray and will get you most of the sound but the Sterling is more refined and will probably last longer in a collection 😁
  6. As Cam said, this has been in development for ages and Carey Nordstrand isn't going to get this wrong so I wouldn't worry about the quality or sound of it. Appreciate the looks won't be for everyone 😁
  7. And for reference. This is the pink it will be. Frozen Strawberry
  8. Also meant to add - I know hipshot do a vintage style bridge that comes in 17 and 18mm but it's more than I want to spend just now. Would an 18mm bridge like this fit? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371949328025
  9. So, some parts have arrived! Picked up some Squier elephant ear tuners from @jezzaboy to replace the tin foil tuners currently in place. I've never drilled holes for tuners so will probably need some advice on measuring to ensuring they fit. Already switched out the lovely strat pickup for a cheap rail pickup in a cool cover and it sounds not bad. Popped an old set of rounds on for now but will end up with tapewounds at some point. This will end up Pink with a tort scratchplate 😅 but the biggest task is working how to install and wire up this Quad rail humbucker I bought - much advice will be needed for this 😁
  10. @ped or @Rich or other assorted admin - could you migrate this to the Build Diaries please? I now have actual parts to tinker with!
  11. Good thing about the LaBellas, as expensive as they seem, you might have to replace them in about 10 years!
  12. Putting the EMGs in it make it super versatile for replacements which is good too
  13. Now if that was short or medium scale I'd be in. Does look good though
  14. I reckon I would go 5 as I just imagine they need more engineering to make a great 5 string (could be completely wrong) and by that logic I could get a 4 that suits my tastes more easily from a production model.
  15. Thanks for all the opinions so far! As I said it's purely hypothetical and I flip flop in what I want far too often just now to commit to a 6 month+ waiting time for any bass. Just thought it was an interesting conundrum for those who regularly play 4 and 5 string.
  16. Chicago Music Exchange have it as VVT. And no offence, but I trust CME over Andertons website.... Weirdly nothing about the V5 on the Sire website. https://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/listing/sire-marcus-miller-v5-alder-4-string-natural-2nd-gen-pre-order/32643004
  17. Three very different basses there, all good within their own right. Out of those, on specs alone, the Sire would win for most. Depends on the pickup arrangement you want. Its worth noting that Sire also do the P7 which is a PJ setup in a precision style body
  18. Don't worry, Harry Connick Jr can sort that
  19. I've now convinced myself that I need to get a burgundy bass with a tort scratchplate 😅
  20. This is purely hypothetical as my current situation means I can't afford don't need any form of new bass but it's a question that I've pondered a fair few times. If I were to get a bass made for me, do I go 4 or 5? I play both and appreciate they both have their uses and advantages. I view 4 string as the instrument where I can do more technical tricks like slapping etc but 5s for me cover a lot of bases and I do like having the 5th string. So really, I'm asking what people in a similar situation did when commissiong their first big expensive toy and why they chose 4 or 5?
  21. If I were a richer man this would be mine! Best of luck.
  22. That's really cool! Must be super compact
  23. So the time has come to sell my amp - I've toyed with this for a long time but I am not going to be in a band and I mostly play in headphones so this is up for sale. If you know about Phil Jones, you know the quality you're getting. Whilst this is a slightly older model this is basically new, all 4 speakers have been replaced and haven't been used for anything louder than indoor use since they were replaced. Also comes with a cover Here are the official specs: • 2 channel 300 W amp (180W into internal speakers) • 4 x high power 5” drivers in computer designed 8Ω enclosure Each input features; • Active/Passive input • 5 band eq (50Hz/160Hz/630Hz, 2.5kHz/12kHz) • Optical compressor/limiter (switchable/adjustable) • Headphone out • Balanced line out XLR DIi) • Effects return • Extension speaker out (taking the output to 300 W with extra 8Ω cab w/speakon) •Dimensions; 16.5 H x 13.5 W x 17.5 D •Weight - 49lb/23kgs I am happy to ship it but it being 23kg it won't be cheap, happy to get you a quote though. Also happy to meet up to arrange collection. Any questions let me know!
