Anyone Out There With a Wal Fretless With a Coated Fingerboard?
Chris2112 replied to AndroWal's topic in Bass Guitars
Can be risky. Traditoinally thick coats are needed for durability and the thicker the coat the more brittle the coating gets. So if put on a neck that flexes a lot, there's a risk of cracking. Can't comment specifically on Wal necks and I'm aware that HG Thor has treated one piece maple necks without issues. Maybe the epoxy is a little thinner or a little more flexible these days...?
This is an issue. My Zoot fretless had a cracked finish along the side of the neck. It was a graphite neck with an ebony fingerboard, and over the past 13 years the ebony has obviously expanded or shrunk slightly, causing the finish on the side of the neck to crack. It was imperceptible to the fingers when you were playing, though it looked a little bit tatty. Not a huge problem to fix (which I looked into) but I thought it would only happen again. So yes, this sort of thing has to be looked at carefully. I can recall playing a couple of fretless jazz basses with epoxied boards that were badly chipped and cracked. -
You, Sir, let a bass technical legend slip through your fingers. Those instruments are like the Porsche 959, Ferrari F40s and McLaren F1s of the bass world. Yes ultimately they MAY be surpassed technically but deserve mythological status simply because they are geek, standard setting instruments and may never be commercially justifiable in the future.
In a way, I'd liken them to Group B rally cars. The likes of which we'll probably never see again...

Ebony indeed! The tone is so, so good. Can't wait to get it recorded!

Here is my new Warwick, traded from Warwickhunt just a couple of days ago. It's an absolute beauty. It plays brilliantly, it looks fantastic but the real joy is the tone. I plan to get some new photos taken of it tomorrow. I've never been so excited about a bass since I got my ACG, which bodes well! I knew you'd have to have something pretty special tucked away to sell the Zon! If I'm ever down your way I'll let you know, maybe pop in for a chat about old Escorts (the cars, not bedraggled ladies of the night) and a look at this beautiful Alembic.

I change where I keep my basses during the winter. I bring them in from the landing where I keep them stacked up, and put them in my cupboard, Makes them harder to access, but I suspect the temperature will fluctuate less in there.

Wow, are these guys still going?

Why do I need LESS volume in the second set?
Chris2112 replied to Moos3h's topic in General Discussion
I'd definitely recommend ear plugs for any loud live music situation. It could be that your ears are getting fatigued, and as has been mentioned, you're losing some of that high frequency perception making you think you need to turn down a bit to balance out the more prominent bass frequencies. -
I have to say, as much as I like this bass I do find acoustic/semi-acoustic basses a bit of a useless item. As much fun as they might be for five minutes, I've always found an electric bass sounds better in the same scenarios as you'll invariably need an amp anyway, unless you're playing to an audience of doormice.

For a Rickenbacker, that is very nice. Shame about the massive, useless big of metal draped over the back pickup though!
James Lomenzo's Yamaha is pretty nice - you could move a lot of air with that, I reckon.
I thought his sound was better when he was using Warwicks!

I suppose it all depends on the inidividual bass. A Sei will likely be as good as any, but at the end of the day you may struggle to escape the fact it's just a fancy jazz bass.

Car derived vans do carry a premium because of their association with 'white van man' business use. They can often end up more expensive than they should be on SD+P, possibly because insurers expect them to be used for business use without declaration. You'd be better off getting an estate if thats the sort of thing you're after. They usually aren't as dismal as CDV's. All the same, weigh up your choice to switch to diesel carefully. Unless you're really doing the big miles, you probably won't see a huge saving. More expensive to buy, high fuel cost, expensive bills when they go wrong, worse to drive...not much going for them, in the long run!

Traded my Zon Sonus to John for a Warwick Streamer of his yesterday. A real gent with great taste in basses, and quite happy to let me have a go on a few to see what they're like! He has also offered to adjust my Streamer in future if it needs a tweak as it settles down. Top stuff, would recommend him to any Basschatter thinking of doing a deal.

I've never played one before but I've spoken to Stuart about them. He has played Washburn acoustic basses for well over a decade now and has always liked them. I think he's really made up with this one, it sounds great in the video too! It wasactually through his acoustic bass that Washburn offered him an electric singature bass.

Thanks to everyone who has looked at this. I've tried to reply to everyone who has PM'ed me, so my apologies if I have missed anyone and not wrote back to you personally. I'm going to see a gentleman who really knows his Warwicks this lunchtime, so I will update the thread with the outcome of that trip.
A Zon for a Warwick ??????????
Possibly. I'm hopefully going to be looking at one which will hopefully be as good as the pictures suggest! I wouldn't trade it for anything less than a top notch Warwick though. And at this level of basses, they're generally all as good as each other, they just do things a little differently to one another. And when I consider what I paid for the Zon, and what a good Warwick costs it seems about right, even if another Zon would be much harder to find. Ultimately, I love new basses and new toys, and my #1 will always be my ACG - hence why other basses come up for trade and go through the revolving doors!

Pandering to my usual GAS and the bottle of KEO Beer I have consumed, I quite fancy a Warwick Thumb NT. Ideally I'd be after a 4 string but I may consider something with more strings (but not less). Fretted or fretless is not a great concern, as long as it's a good Thumb with plenty of growl! Following my usual 'one in, one out and don't get rid of the ACG' rule, I can only offer my beautiful Zon Sonus bass for trade. It has Bartolini singlecoil pickups and a Zon Polyfusion preamp, a bubinga top and an ash body and a Zon carbon fibre neck. It is very light, it plays beautifully and it sounds great. It comes with a Zon hardcase, and I would be willing to post anywhere in the UK. I will insure the shipping as long as the other involved party does the same for their bass. I'm still stockpiling money for a winter car (if I need one) so purchasing a Thumb outright is not an option right now. Rush - Time Machine Tour Blu Ray / DVD / CD
Chris2112 replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
Yes, between Counterparts and Test For Echo they seemed a bit lost. Hardly surprising really, in the musical swamp that was the 1990's. The technical, poppy songs they'd done for the late 80's didn't suit mass market tastes anymore, and Presto and RTB had slowly re-focused their rock edge. But they seemed a bit aimless, doing simple rock songs and hiding a great 'Rush' track on each album. Vapor Trails really brought them back, when they had to say "if we want to do this, then lets do this". -
Yes, I believe so, the JD Thumb bass.
