Vic Wooten Fodera for me - quite partial to the buckeye top models: if only they sold one that looked like Vic's original:
That is just stunning. I love the fact that over the years, Victor has only had the very most basic and remedial of work carried out on it. Vinnie always offers to refinish it for him, and he refuses!
Sorry, but that's just bollocks.
Indeed, especially saying as Hold Your Fire is their best record! -
Squier Classic Vibe Range - Which to choose?!
Chris2112 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
the one I played wasn't , they are certainly different takes on Fender Jazz's, but a CVJ better than a VMJ better.... I wouldn't say so, they are both very good for the money.
Oh well, you must have found a right old duffer. I had a Squier VM Fretless, which was a pretty good bass. I played some of the VM fretteds but wasn't too blown away by them. The Classic Vibe jazzes have been really good though. The bridge alone makes it worth the premium over the VM, the brass item is so much better than those dodgy bent bits of tin. -
Were you at Newcastle on the TM tour? Where I was, it was so boomy as to be almost unlistenable. I mentioned this to friends who were there who said the spund was spot-on where they were. I must have been in the middlle of a standing wave or something.
I was. You could well have been in a standing wave. As I say, the sound quality was noticeably worse than the first time I saw them there, but not so much that it was unlistenable, at least where I was stood, which was further back than the first time. -
The differences: Too much foam under the strings in a live situation. At 1.45 the bass player tries to play a line which he screws up because the notes die instantly. It doesn't work and sounds awful to me. This is the original, with foam. The same line at 1.56 sounds pretty good to me but this is in the studio where it works well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPJ-KnveLh8
He also looks like a right tit, sloping around with that bass dragging off the floor, which is clearly making it harder for him to play the line. Why not just lift the strap, you daft twat.
I really like signature basses for some reason (even of players who i can't stand or bands i don't like so nothing to do with band love!) What's bad is people who play them just to copy people they idolise, using it in your own way to sound like youre self is fine!
For years when I had my Kubicki Ex Factor I used to plug it in and get that awesome Stuart Hamm tone. People used to say 'why are you so obsessed with having his tone? Why not get your own?'. It just so happened that 'his' tone was incredible, and it worked really well for me. Why settle for less, just because I heard it somewhere else first?

Squier Classic Vibe Range - Which to choose?!
Chris2112 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
I've had two of the Classic Vibe Jazz basses in white. Beautiful instruments for the money they cost, really superb budget basses. I have absolutely no need for them, so I sold them both but they were great. They are head and shoulders above the Vintage Modified stuff. -
I hope he is back playing his Ken Smith basses as soon as possible! Glad to hear he's getting better.

Whilst 'God' doesn't do much for me, I do find it inspiring that Victor incorporates such a thing into his music. He breathes his passion for life into his music. I have never seen him 'jobbing it', he always looks as though he lives for music and nothing pleases him more than to be playing his bass. He inspires me with just his philosophy on music and playing. His music on the other hand, I mostly enjoy immensely. I love his fusion stuff, though some of his solo stuff is a bit Gospel-y and not really my thing. All the same, he is one of the best musicians alive today and easily the most revolutionary bassist since Jaco. It's not just his technical mastery that makes him a great, it's his ability to just make a damn good tune, however he chooses to do it.

Stew is a great player. Some of the Talkbass crowd bought him a Conklin bass a few years ago, quite simply one of the most sublime basses I've ever seen. I'm not a fan of slapping on a fretless bass though, I think Bakithi Kumalo is the only bassist I've heard doing it and thought 'wow, that sounds great'.
-
I'll usually play a solo like Continuum. Your playing has to really have some depth to it if you're playing solo and looking to make an impression, so just playing something fast unaccompanied probably won't cut it. For the easily impressed though, a good old fashioned slap solo in E usually impresses, especially with plenty of hammer on and ghost notes!

Rush - Time Machine Tour Blu Ray / DVD / CD
Chris2112 replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
Hmm, I'll see if I can find some samples. I have to say, I saw them on the Snakes and Arrows tour and the sound was fantastic, at the same venue on the Time Machine tour the bass was a little mushier and it sounded a little bit boomy. Still a great show though, I really enjoyed it. Realistically though, we'll never see Rush playing small venues with masterfully scultped sound again. -
Where can you buy Bartolini pickups in the UK?
Chris2112 replied to Spoombung's topic in General Discussion
Oh, I do love Bartolini pickups, they sound great in my Zon. And they sounded great in my Zoot fretless too! -
I think EBMM missed a trick not making a Flea signature with a modulus neck.
Didn't he make some outlandish demands, like that he wanted the Stingray to be renamed 'The Flea bass' or something? I also think EBMM are not the kind of progressive company that would choose to have graphite necks.

Chuck is the man. I hope he gets better soon.

It's been a good year.
Actually graphite necks can have dead spots. Rob states that on the Status site and I have quite a nice dead spot on the open A on my S2 fretless.
Indeed, but IIRC, with the higher resonant frequency on a graphite neck they were much more likely to be either over the 12th fret, or at a frequency above what the bass can produce.
-
MB1. No dead spots, improves sustain, narrower neck profile, wont go out tune as often,Carbon Graphite is more stable than wood. Try one!
Got it in one! It's lighter too. And sounds better!

Which Basschatters bass would you most like to own? (and why?)
Chris2112 replied to EBS_freak's topic in Bass Guitars
Anyone with a Wal mk2 fretted, thats the bass I want. -
It sounds like you're producing a note that is resonating in the room. I had a similar effect years ago when I had my Ibanez BTB and an Ashdown Electric Blue 150 in my bedroom, where I had a cabinet which was the length of the room and waleld with sliding mirrors. One of these mirrors used to resonate when I played a G note, and the metal frame would rattle like the wire off a snare drum! It really annoyed me.

When was the last time you broke a string?
Chris2112 replied to WalMan's topic in General Discussion
It would have been about 2005, it was the G-string on my Ibanez BTB. I was practising some Primus riffs and got a bit carried away with one part, popping the string very hard and ultimately snapping it. Never even been close to doing it since. -
Say you're leaving but say you're willing to honour all booked gigs and any other gigs between now and the most distant in time gig but none after that date - unless they find a replacement before then, in which case you'll go sooner. They can't ask fairer than that.
Indeed. And what a shame it is, to leave a band with someone who you have played with for over 20 years.
A little on the harsh side IMO. Firstly, a lot of kids his age wear their hair the same way. It is called "fashion".
And this is precisely what is going wrong.
