1. Another vote for Tal Wilkenfield. Not the most dire of the lot (perhaps), but so ridiculously overrated you'd think the greats like Jaco, Wooten, Hamm et al had never been around! I contend that if she was a bloke, she'd have been written off as a lacklustre wannabe! Nothing personal against her, she's just uninspired and uninspiring!
2. I've got 12" on the slack and I really want to buy this, or at least make an offer. However, I can only remember one "tribute" Jaco model that was very expensive...is this being misrepresented, even accidentally? Was there another model that was reliced when you bought it? I notice the copper grounding strip at the bridge - this is a unique feature to the Jaco bass, isn't it? A mark of authenticity in the Fender range?
3. Bugger me, I know I've got all the fretless I'd ever need in my Alembic 5 string, but I still can't help GASing over this! I might have to chuck one of my basses in a skip and make room for this! Love it!
4. I had a Warwick Thumb BO 1999 with a beautiful wenge neck. It really was an awesome bass, with perhaps one fault. If the strings on it were anything less than fresh it sounded awful, and I owned it at a time when I wasn't playing out a great deal. If you're getting enough use of use of it to justify puttng new strings on every week then you're in luck! Overall, I still love Warwick basses and I'll own a Streamer at some point!
5. I think Ibanez had the best marketing of any guitar company, during the 1980's. Everyone who was someone had or would have an Ibanez...Vai, Satch, Gambale, Holdsworth, Lane etc etc... they are the guitars of the 1980's and beyond!
6. FWIW, I'd have to say the fact you've got sentimental value attached to one bass, much the same as the one you're wanting to buy, is a good case for not selling it and buying the other one. Sentimental value only means more as the years go on.
7. You only live once, and the stuff you have, you can't take it with you in the end...!
8. After selling my first Kubicki Ex Factor, I realised it was my dream bass. Everything about them, the sound, the look, the design, the feel - perfect for me. To get myself one for a second time, I traded a brilliant, mint condition Warwick Thumb BO with a slim wenge neck. Never looked back either, but I did have to drive to Lancashire M6 services to trade for it, and to get there for like 11 in the morning after finishing work at 1200 the previous night! That was an early morning and a half! I'll never be as daft as to let it go again!
9. Great shop, well run with helpful staff! I loved the Status S2 they had in there recently, it was a brilliant bass.
10. Really good website, and really good basses!
11. I must have got one of those when they first came out. It was so "first gen" that it didn't even have the Wilkinson pickups! The neck pocket was slightly shoddy, however there was some flame in the maple of the neck which was nice. It sounded pretty dire now that I look back, and played awfully as I strung it with Rotosound Steve Harris flats, which sounded crap and were unbelievably stiff.
12.
Ibanez BTB 6 string... dreadfull thing. It was one of the first ones they made... the later ones were far better in every respect
I had a first generation BTB405QM. I think it must be about 8 years or so since I bought it...it was some years ago now! Great bass, really loved it. Didn't really know what to do with the dual band mid control at the time but I recall it did sound awesome!
13. Sounds amazing when you're plucking close to the bridge there!
14.
This is exactly what intrigues me - is it worth getting an Accountant when you're just earning a few hundred quid a year? What's the threshold?
I'm not sure thats worth it - at the very most, hire an accountant for an hour at the end of the tax year, present them with your books and proof of expenses and ask them to do the number crunching so you can present a feasible looking tax return. You'll pay your £30 or £40 and at least you know your stuff is sorted.
15. Aye, Gary can play alright! Never been a huge fan of his tone but he can find his way around a fretless!
16.
I don't think I've had a bad bass - this is the one I'd rank lowest...(bitchin' case though eh?)
You've been lucky, because that looks incredible!
17. Two - my fretted Kubicki and fretless Alembic. If either were to fail, the other could step in and the gig would be saved. They've never failed me yet though!
18. For me, John is one the greats of fretless bass playing, alongside Jaco and Bakithi Kumalo. He just has such a wonderful vocal thing going on. Never before have I heard someone so able to make the bass sound like a human voice and he really can get right inside the instrument and make it touch your heart, which is incredible. His playing on Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" is my favourite of his. I only wish I liked the rest of Kate's stuff so I could hear more of him! He is cruelly underrated! The phrase in this at 02:24 is so powerful and perfect it is heartbreaking. Absolutely incredible.
19. Aye, I had heard he had done his back and hands in due to his atrocious technique on the drums! Doesn't look comfortable at all!
20.
Here it is (well, half of it) in action last month, together with a bit of a bass face:
Thats one flat EQ!
21. My Kubicki Ex Factor is 32" scale. You don't really notice the difference apart from on the body, where the gap between the bridge and neck is noticeably smaller. In terms of tension, the 2" difference seems minimal and it doesn't feel loose or flappy whatsoever. So for me, it's something that works very well.
22. I've been playing through a Trace Elliot rig for years now. I had Ashdown Electric Blue stuff before that and while it was ok at the time, it was blown away by this Trace Elliot rig. The head, a GP7SM 300, cost me £100 and the cab cost me £250. I fancy getting a Hartke head just for a change of tone but this stuff works really well - sounds incredible and never fails! It weighs a ton but it always delivers, and thats whats important to me.
23. I've not had any trouble with mine, perhaps the wires in yours were loose? There is a little bit of "normal" singlecoil hum but it's certainly quieter than my Vintage Modified Fretless and Classic Vibe jazz were!
