1. Hopefully this will further end the obsession with his Wal basses - he could be playing anything through all those pedals and you wouldn't know the difference! A real shame, as Wal basses don't half sound amazing when you let their tone shine through!
2. Do you think the molds are actually broken or did Rob just hide them away and say he wouldn't use them again?
3.
too early dude. It does not help you but i will not have the cash till probably Nov, if you still have the cab then i would def be interested as i really do want a TE 4x10 cab. Would you be willing to courier it down south (i will pay of course). cheers.
I'd be open to the idea but I've no idea how I'd package something so large for shipping!
4.
I am planning on getting a fretless Warwick now. Probably a Bubinga standard Corvette. However, these are as rare as rocking horse poo and don't hold out much hope of getting one soon.
Surely they're not that rare? I've seen a few though admittedly none on the boards here for a while. I remember when the Gallery in London was crammed with bubinga Corvettes!
5. Evening gents, I've decided to sell my Trace Elliot rig, which has served me faithfully for the past 5 or so years. The reason I've decided to move it on is simply because: A) I don't need a 4x10" cab anymore I've just bought an Ashdown Mark King signature 2x10" combo which will suit my needs much better. I bought the Trace Elliot stuff chasing Mark King's tone and since I plan on buying another Status bass this year I thought I might as well go for it and get his amp as well! The cab is definitely for sale now. It's a 4x10" cab with carry handles on the side and that rubber type skin cover. The previous owner believed it was a 1992 or 1993 model but I've no way of knowing this, I bought it because it's a great sounding cab. The head is possibly for sale at the moment, if someone really wants it then it will go as soon as the Ashdown stuff has arrived. It's a GP7 SM Bass Preamp rated at 300W. I'm sure many will be familiar with this sort of thing - it has a 7 band graphic EQ, two preset modes, active and passive inputs, an effects panel, a brightness balance for the EQ along with a full mute and an EQ off button. Basic stuff really, but well looked after, reliable and with great tone. The stuff has only been out of the house a few times since I got it, usually when I've took the head out for recording sessions. I've been fortunate enough to have been able to gig mainly with DI stuff - this kit hasn't had a hard life with me! It's served me well and ideally I'd have kept it but space is a real premium for me at the moment, I've bought the Ashdown with nowhere to put it! I'd rather the Trace Elliot stuff be bought and get used rather than become a coffee table in my front room! I'd like £100 for the head and £100 for the cab collected from Newcastle Upon Tyne. If you're interested in both we may be able to negotiate a bit on the price! Here are some rather gloomy pictures I've taken with my iphone and a head torch. I appreciate they're not the best quality but they show whats on offer. If anyone really wants better pictures I'll see what I can do during daylight hours!
6.
I used to, and still to, love Metallica. I just dont see how a Sadowsky suits Newstead one bit. The Sadowsky tone, IMO, doesnt suit heavy music.
I don't know, that growling chugging sound you hear across Load, Reload and Cunning Stunts is great...I quite like the sound of Jason's Sadowsky basses!
7. Geert, you seem to get some interesting items in your collection! I still dream of that Jonas Hellborg bass I had to back out on!
8. ooh I must have a few shots from my front room... aah, my old Stealth...
9. At first I was on the fence about the Sterling model. Having played one, I think I'd still go for a proper 'Ray or Sterling if that was what I was after. But they're not bad basses. The Euro Spector I played next to it was considerably better though.
10.
Yes that must be why its called "The sweet spot" and copied by everyone else? And why they have never managed to sell many instruments!
Indeed, if you've only got one pickup that is the place to put it! A brilliant balance of thump from the neck end and burp fom the bridge end! If only they could sort out the volume on those G strings!
11.
Always loved the black and gold finish, takes me back to watching Henry Thomas on Rockschool back in the day with his Yamaha BB5000 in black and gold.
I know what you mean there! I hope you're a better player than he was on that show though! Still, it's always awesome to get the bass you've been dreaming of (for me, it's Kubicki Ex Factors). Hope you enjoy it! Just a word of warning...don't sell it! I traded my first Kubicki and regretted it later...took me nearly 4 years to find another one!
12.
partly because of SC's style I guess but I also associate Alembics with intricate finger work more than any other bass. Another favourite piece of Alembic playing is from the wonderful Jimmy Johnson - if you can spare 4 minutes listen through to some of his really tasteful stuff with James Taylor
Jimmy can't half play! I always think of Stanley and Mark King when I think of Alembic. Stan went from that strange "rubber band" sound and onto something thin and precise and burpy. A Lovely sound, though quite different from the tones Mark King got from his Alembics...all distinctly "Alembic" tones! The first minute and fifteen seconds of this demonstrate the Alembic tone perfectly to me (for a fretted bass at least). Bright, piano-like bottom end with a curious, thin and precise sounding top end. Of course, take into account this is a 30" scale bass too. Some awesome playing from Stan here and a great tune too:
13. I'd not seen the Vertex until today but it really is vile. Come on Modulus, sort it out - make a headless bass or something and get some cool back!
14. As I've said before, the Classic Vibe jazz basses are great instruments, shame I sold mine so soon after I got it - it must have been one of the first into the country!
15. "Was it something I said" by Brandon Flowers. Possibly the best track I've ever heard him on. Amazing melody with lovely 80's style synth tones supplemented by a driving gritty bassline and 80's style shimmering guitars. The lyrics tell a pretty compelling story too for such a short song. I've been hammering the bassline all day on my Kubicki.
16.
I'm a fan of the Kubickis, I'd love one! In white of course.
Funny you should say that, I used to have a white one! 1989 with the 18V six postion preamp. One of the few "cross over" basses made with the original preamp but with the Fender custom shop stamp on the headstock. This was #1777. As for the Sabre special...
17. I'll add to the list anything which has been sloppily modded or made to look "punk". This includes stickers, garish paint jobs, dodgy scratch plates along with the woeful playing associated with these types of instrument. And hollowbodies, yuck.
18.
Agreed on Gus basses, they try too hard to be different in my view but end up looking like a "futuristic" guitar from a bad 1970s/80s sci fi film.
Yeah, they definitely look absolutely dreadful. The thing is with the Warwick Vampyre, it just looks absolutely horrendous. I'm sure it'll appeal to 14 year old metal listeners though, hence why they made a Rockbass version!
19. I quite liked it, a busy approach which adds some interest to an otherwise fairly dull song. I turned off the "Too Young To Die" video after about 30 seconds.
20. Just the usual rubbish like P basses, Gibsons, Hofners etc etc.
21.
Many watch makers will charge much more than a £4000 premium to go from a Steel to a Titanium variant.
And many car manufacturers will charge more than that to change the dashboard trim from brushed metal to carbon fibre. Not common in the bass world and quite uncool too.
22. I think this signifies the point where Fodera have really lost it IMO... Time was when the dedicated, averageman could stretch to a Fodera. A few years of saving and he could live the dream. Now, look at them. I don't buy the "bass making isn't an easy business" argument, as everyone else seems to manage without having $24,000 basses. Alembic used to be fantastically expensive but at least you always went through a dealer, took advantage of a special offer and got some haggled-in extras. Add to that the fact that the bass is made exactly how you want it with no $1000 upcharge for a different radius, you'd get a bass for at least 3/4 of the intial price. The fact that Fodera now have their most expensive models as direct order only shows to me they're wanting to take money from the hands of their dealers and they're also wanting to rip off the customer as much as possible - you can guarantee this direct order won't come with the usual discount! The fact that they're charging an extra £4000 for a truss rod and a different type of metal bridge just illustrates how bloated and excessive they have become. I was a long time defender of Fodera's prices, saying "It's their shop, you can choose not to shop there" but they truely now seem detached from reality. Extremely uncool - perhaps even more embarassing when you consider the likes of Wal, Status, Phil Kubicki etc etc will make you a better bass anyway!
23. I think the first thing I'd be putting on Stingray would be a graphite neck! I think the Market for upgrades to EBMM basses has been severely limited by Sterling Ball and his insane belief that his product cannot be made any better! For years Ball and his policies have been a talking point but I think now he has turned into a joke and a gross parody of his former self.
24. Aren't the Barts in Modulus basses specially made for Modulus? In the same way that the Zon pickups are? Irrespective of this, I think the bass is best just left "as is". Surely the humbucker should be enough to get by on? I just think that by modifying the bass you could be shooting yourself in the foot and doing away with a good studio bass.
