I don't get how succesful an active/passive preamp can be... the pot values for active vs passive are wildly different - there's a pay off got to be made somewhere. I guess thats where some preamps have the "get out of jail free" by flicking a switch and wiring the pickups straight to the jack... but any tone shaping is always going to take a hit due to pot values... unless somebody can explain something I'm missing?

They were readily available at one stage via the Gallery but now they are like rocking horse sh1t... and Nico doesn't seem interested in making them available outside of Schack basses now (understandable). There are number of preamps that I really love - the GB bass processor (of course!), The Schack... and the other stunning preamp which actually works great with single coils (I'm more of a soap bar man), is the the preamp in the Yamaha BBNE2.

I think I may have found one though (or maybe two!) - they are a very musical preamp with a stunning top end, especially with a set of soapbars.

The amp is probably your no 1 suspect. Those things are notoriously quiet despite their generous power rating. Remember volume measured in dbs not watts. Whole rehearsal sounds like a nightmare situation tbh.

Love pedal steel. Paul Franklin is probably my fave along with the aforementioned. For some edgy stuff try Robert Randolph. Enjoy!

As an aside, I still think there is a right way and wrong way to wire a plug... or perhaps, a right way and a more right way to wire a plug. My grandpa taught me to have a long earth cable inside the plug (even double back on itself in some cases) so if the cable grip failed and the cable was pulled, the earth cable would most likely always stay on it's pin. Plugs that have the wire cut to length exactly, in the right situation, could have the cable pulled enough to release the earth but not the live and neutral. It's something that I've never seen proactively taught, but it something that I've carried on doing since I was taught. It's neither here or there now because the safety bods push for molded prewired plugs.

He should've have finished off... "PS - aren't you glad I don't make pickups?!" for maximum uncalled for, yet comedic, effect.

Have to say I was mighty impressed with the ATS. Closest that I've got to "my" sound in a lightweight package. I would love to A/B my current rig against the ATS rig side by side to see how close. That head is cool - my fave micro head yet.
