And by the way, if you think that the rest of the band can't hear Tim's rig onstage, or that the audience can't hear it in a venue as small as the Whisky A Go Go, you clearly have no idea quite how loud a rig this powerful and large is!
I do. Any 410 running at any significant volume is going to be heard at Whisky A Go Go I bet the sound men love him overpowering the foh mix.
Once again, the big revelation is inside the 2X10, 4X10 and 8X10. I'm not going through it again, all the info is on the website.
You mean the LPF(s) on one of the columns... which given the apparent fact (courtesy of dood in this thread) that the soundguy has close miced up the full range speakers (meaning that the sound of the cab is irrelevant) which then go to feed the foh, monitoring and any recording, actually doesn't come into play at all... especially as TC wears inears? I think I'm being to understand now.
I did. Avalon U5 as a preamp into a QSC PLX3002 power amp. That was into two Acme Low-B2s but they were then replaced by a DIY cab of my own design which became the Barefaced Big One. The Barefaced Big Twin 2 is the direct descendant of that first cab and I still use that same rack. Until you get into very expensive (and usually very bulky and heavy) active PA speakers I don't think it's possible to achieve better high accuracy reproduction of your DI'd tone.
Not baiting here - just generally interested. What's your definition of very expensive and what sort of spec?
You'd like to think that, wouldn't you?
Not at all - in fact, again, I couldn't care less if he did or didn't do that - my comment was and still is, completely tongue in cheek.
I'd say it almost never gives you the same tone as the artist using it. Like signature basses. The point is, he thinks Barefaced gear is more than good enough, the implication being that if it's good enough for him, then it's good enough for you.
And conversely... Lots of name artists use Fender basses - but there is a trend on here that if you buy a jazz bass, you do your best not to buy a Fender and go for one of the many boutique clones. From what I can tell, a 2x10, 4x10 and a 8x10 has been swapped out for a 2x10, 4x10 and a 8x10. I don't quite see the big revelation.
He certainly won't harm the reputation and at least they are micd up, loads of people here have purchased gear based on a players live sound being good even when the player uses in ears and has no mics on the cabs, at best the preamp is on the signal chain.
But that gives the sound of the speaker and not the cab. How many people mic their cabs up to the PA in this manner outside of large stages? Let's not forget the signal from these mics are then mangled with a tonne of outboard either live or in the studio. Not saying that this is exclusively the case for TC - it's common practice. But like everything - buying the gear doesn't always give you the same tone as the artist using it. If I was TC and there is generally a big interest in my tone, I'd be profiling my rig and selling it through Kemper. Mind you, from what I've been reading, he's super cagey about how he gets his tone - lots of modifications, his own pickups and hiding the identity of what pedals he uses. Maybe these aren't Barefaced cabs after all. Maybe it's a big trick to put people off the scent ;-p
I'm not saying TC will shift more units than those other super-celeb-bassists, I'm just saying the guy is known for being a tone fiend, and IMO he's never had a bad tone, unlike all those other guys
But tone is completely subjective. If somebody said they hate TCs tone but love MK's tone, who are you to say otherwise? The equipment shifted due to the latter is in far greater quantities than the former... and isn't that what endorsement is about? Shifting boxes? I like Anthony Jackson' s tone - I suspect he hasn't been instrumental shifting many Meyer boxes though...
But.....but.....but what about GAS and the eternal search for sonic nirvana? I played through PA only once at a festival and felt naked! Hated it.
Google JH Audio, Ultimate Ears, 1964 ears... Should help you along. And some proper PA that pins you to the back wall should get the juices flowing.
All great musicians but they're not known for their tone specifically IMO. All those guys are pretty inconsistent with tone anyway aren't they? That's what I mean - whether or not Tim C is a virtuoso bassist or whether or not you like his music, I'm pretty sure it's a fact that he's widely regarded as a bit of a "tone wizard" on the bass.
I don't know - I think Mark King alone had been responsible for selling a lot of whatever basses and amps he is using at the time because people are trying to cop his sound. How many times have we read about the Wal vs Stingray argument for Flea? I'm not sure you can write those players off in a single statement like that. Both of those players will sell more gear through their use of gear than TC for sure. God only knows how many Hofners and Rickys Macca has been responsible for selling.

Re backup Isn't this true of anything though... If your PA goes down, how are you gonna hear the singer?
we go through the pa post eq if we are doing a larger gig but most is vocals and maybe a bit of drums (mostly kick) through the pa for normal gigs. we have been trying IEMs but i'm not keen yet but that may just be getting the settings right. Would i do away with my rig behind me? i dont think so, feeling the bass as well as hearing it is just as important and if it only going through front of house then i'm not going to feel it. Just my opinion of course
Feeling bass all depends what you are running foh. There are ways of getting the feeling of bass back if you find it lacking - by using things like a pleasure board. If you want some pointers, there's an excellent thead in the Misc section of the forum.
McCartney, King, Flea, Sting, that u2 bloke that would play through a Saisho tape player from the 80s if you put his squiggle on it?
Also... I would like all those that googled the above names upon reading this thread to put their hands up... :-p

Yes. PA provides front of house. IEMs provide my monitoring however. I split the input to channels on the digital desk so I can EQ for my inears and EQ for front of house. I sometimes use a Microbass 2 before the desk... but have found the tone shaping on the desk usually enough to give me exactly what I want as the EQ is a lot more powerful than any analogue solution. It's only if you are into running drive, fx loops etc, that I would say a preamp before the desk would be useful. Otherwise, if you are a plug straight in kinda guy, than just plug straight into the desk. I would wager that nobody would be any the wiser if you were using your Avalon or not. Sack off the Avalon and buy some proper IEM inears, moulded preferably. My preference now is certainly big PA (think two full range tops and subs - or at least top end 15s) and as little backline as possible. Your band will sound better if you let your PA do the work. How many gigs have we been to in smaller venues where if you stand at the front, the guitarist takes your head off... yet if you stand at the back of the room, you can't even hear the guitar as the bodies of people are doing a great job of absorbing it all? Well, let your PA do the work - problem disappears.
I notice one or two members who usually like to chime in on a Barefaced thread are here conspicuous by their absence.
I hope you aren't referring to me! Sorry for the lack of input today, I'm still trying to figure out when a 4x10 is not a 4x10 -I don't think the addition of a LPF on one column is going to cause a stir in any patents office. And to be fair, I usually stay out of bf threads nowadays. It's all been done before... a bit like 1x10s, 2x10s, 4x10s, 8x10s...
Anyone got any suggestions for affordable but not awful patch leads? I'm only using 5 cos my board is just 3 pedals linked together for an elaborate always on overdrive sound, however if they're 10 each I'm not sure I can manage that at the moment.
Stick with what you have until you can afford to replace them. (Unless of course, they are already knackered!)
Oh yes very nice. Those 745s on their own would kill most bass rigs but people are obsessed with having their own big rig to stand next to!
You wouldn't even need any monitors would you? Or is that fishful thinking?

Just in case it was missed - "Having said all that, congrats to Alex for landing TC. That's got to be an exciting prospect" - me. I doff my cap for the landing of such a player. I don't know who'd be jealous - apart from another cab manufacturer? I certainly don't care what TC is playing through and have no vested interest.
