I hated gigging with stuff on poles - the sound was simply wrong........ I had some trouble in convincing Alex that I REALLY wanted two Dubsters (it's a different ethos) to get that 'grunt' out of a 'disco' system. (hate that word, it sends out all the wrong messages)
Sound simply wrong?
Totally thinking about getting one. Only thing putting me off is that the powered version only goes to 8ohms.
Depends how many cabs you want to run... but it will power a single 212, 410 etc no problem. I have to say, they are better for guitar than bass though.
I think the Cardioid feature in portable products never really gets used, or at least not by those that understand it properly. If BF are looking to go into mainstream I think they need to look at the cosmetics of the products compared to other brands. Though if they perform.... The light weight feature is ideal for the weekend warriors (EV ETX18SP weighs the same as a small tank)
I've known of a couple of guys that use it on smaller gigs - admittedly they are more into the DJing side of stuff rather than the band stuff but it's a feature nonetheless. Cosmetics... well, theres a whole forums worth of arguments on that one. The lightweight feature for the weekend warrior and DJ is defo a good market... if it can compete/surpass the competition. These BFs aren't cheap subs - so they'll need to perform and stand up to some abuse. Those EV subs are indeed heavy - circa 50kg - but without looking, I'd say most comparable performing subs are of that sort of magnitude? Anyway, isn't that what the blue wheels were invented for?

DSP to tune and HPF for speaker protection for sure... - but a box set to be operating with a crossover as a default? A crossover slope vs a HPF are two very different things. Agreed, you'd be looking for a minimum of 3 for such a setup but I don't know if you'd expect that feature or not - I would wager that one of the competitors to this BF would be the ETX18SP, which has a cardioid DSP at this price point. As you say, I don't know if BF are gunning for the larger PA market or not, I wouldn't like to say.

Agreed DSP on board
Looks like there is DSP on board so no need for X-over
Agreed - but it looks like the audio out is a true through (e.g. it's in parallel with the audio in) - meaning that it's going to send full range to the tops - unless my understanding of the analogue out from the documentation on the power amp is wrong. That can't be ideal? It would depend on your top having it's own crossover too... which most don't... but a certain FR800 could if it's using the same power amp module... but what happens if people don't want to use BF tops? The DSP could be really quite interesting - do BF subs have a built in cardioid setting for example? That would be a big plus for large scale use. I'm genuinely interested in seeing what these subs have.
Is this for use as a bass cabinet?
I'd hope not... I suspect it's aiming squarely for the 18 PA Subwoofer... where high performance is usually the domain of very heavy, very pricey units. I'd like to see more on the specs associated with this unit because if it can reliably compete with it's competitors at circa half the weight, then they may be onto something. It would make a great partner to the FR800 I'm sure... however I've not seen any word on a crossover, so it may be the case that some speaker management needs to be factored in. Guess the details will come out in time... but there's some brave guys buying without the specs being clear!
A bit more than a party trick for a working freelance player. If you don't dep, fine. If you do, be prepared to run into the likes of 'Car Wash'
Ah yes... the annoying fill that 99% of bass players do an awful job of playing.

Need a pedalboard powerpack for 12V 1200mA?????
EBS_freak replied to skidder652003's topic in Effects
Sounds like a plan - Get something that you can mount the power on the underside... then it gives you options - and it's easier to hide power blocks like the one I posted, than trying to figure out what to do with those wall warts. -
How many people will buy this because it'll make them think it will give them instant Jamiroquai?

Those pesky cats get everywhere. A week back, I'd painted the door frame on the girlfriends house and went out. Came back to find the neighbour's cat had fallen asleep against it. Had to cut the poor fella free. But worst of all, had to sand the door back and go again. Not sure if the neighbour knows why their cat has a short back and side or a dark grey stripe across it...

Any pics of these out in the wild yet?

Downdown's comment about power output is correct. Hopefully you have a pedal board where you can put the power under the board. What I did, was run a power tank thing for all the pedals but would use something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-240v-AC-DC-12v-2A-5-5mm-Mains-Adaptor-Charger-fits-Bose-SoundLink-Mini-/391628807448?hash=item5b2ee55d18 - for my power hungry digital pedal (think it was MB SuperSynth or something like that - I don't use a fx board currently). I would split the mains - one to the big PSU, one to the power tank underneath the board... (in fact, my power tank thingy had a mains through for daisy chaining PSUs). Hope this helps. -

Tape is better than conductive paint unless you paint that stuff really thick... and the paint is a lot more expensive.

Cable keeps popping out of amp during gigs. Help!
EBS_freak replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
It has been known to happen with sealed speaker cabs and the wrong type of socket but not with an amp.
Yes - actually, now you say that, I have seen that... but of course, a lot of things are now Speakon. But amps! That's some vibration. -

I've never seen a jack being vibrated out of a jack socket! -
I use active 12" EV subs 700w & come in at 45lbs each they are the lightest I could find ,I did consider using my BF compacts with a 1000w digital bass amp but they are not deep enough in dimension to take a pole to support top speakers .
If you are into 12" lightweight subs, the RCF 702 ASIIs weigh in 17.5kg. I don't think the BF Compacts are tuned to do subwoofer duties - I think Alex is expecting people to take the FR800 with the subwoofer DSP if they want a dedicated BF sub (that is, ignoring this new 18" offering)

It depends if the the device which is being switched requires proprietary circuitry... otherwise, I used to make mine out of Hammond boxes and simple latched or unlatched switches (depending upon application). Now - and thats if I can be bothered with it, I have a Boss FS-5L for my rack mount tuner mute. (I tend to turn around and push the button on the front now).

Any news what is happening crossover wise? Or would it be a speaker management system that would need to split to the tops and subs? That's an impressive lack of weight!
