Good opportunity to point out once again that my £60 pawn shop MIJ Jazz copy is the nicest bass I've ever played: If I was ever in the position to spend silly money on a custom bass, most of it would be a replica of this thing! J.
Luvin it!

Bought a used Limelight jazz for £700, spent a bit on a few things for it and sold for £550. I thought I got a good deal when I bought it (well I did!). The market can be very strange sometimes can't it! -
... cheers man, they are starting to grow on me even more

.... so I've swapped the hardware on my Thumb and Stage 1, thought I'd see what the difference in colour made. I must admit I really like the contrast on the Thumb with it's gold hardware, wasn't too sure before. The black on the Stage 1 is growing on me, I originally initiated the swap to see if I liked black hardware with the Honey Violin finish anyhow so I think I'll probably keep it swapped. stacked pots from '60 to '61, top silver knobs are volume for each pickup, black bottom knobs are tone for each pickup. By '62 they changed to the VVT we all know and love!
I want one
+ 1

... man, I can't believe the prices of these basses new. For less than the price of a new MIM Fender you can get a hand built bass that, by all press on here is a really decent instrument. I am seriously impressed and find it hard to see how other manufacturers can justify their pricing!!!

Warwick Streamer LX6 Defunct Active Circuit
Only my point of view but at a guess anything new from Warwick is going to be mighty expensive. I'd be looking to replace it with something else, non MEC. Keep an eye on the "other" for sale forum here you often see used pre amps for sale.
+1, I forgot to mention that point lol! -
Warwick Streamer LX6 Defunct Active Circuit

.... I've played a BCers Warwick Streamer (Luke's) and he has a John East Preamp installed in it. Very versatile and comes with the knobs IIRC. I've 3 Warwicks and if the electronics went I'd go for the same as Luke's. -

Hey all, Mark got back intouch with me regarding a cab he had for sale, dropped it off at my door and was bought for a very fair price. Wouldn't hesitate to deal with again. Cheers.

Nice job, hadn't thought of that method before. If using superglue as a top coat do you know if you can match the existing gloss/sheen level?
I've got a Westone Spectrum LX bass that uses a similar tone shaping system; from what I hear with mine I believe that the active control boosts a set amount (of dB) which is sweepable (by frequency). The interaction with the passive (treble cut) control can be a little confusing but you really can do a lot with it as Grangur says. My go to setting is typically no treble cut on the passive and boost the bass maybe at about the halfway point between the centre-detent and fully anticlockwise. Bear in mind that a lot of what you hear with a fretless comes from the setup and any vibrato you apply when stopping (fingering) the string. You'll likely need to check that the nut slots are deep enough, have the fingerboard with perhaps a little less relief that a fretted bass and get the action so that you get 'mwahh' but no 'sizzle' (which is what I call it when the strings are too low). You might have some fretless sound in your head that you're familiar with on record - bear in mind that you might have heard some effects used; perhaps slight chorus and slight reverb. HTH
Nice observations re action and sizzle, not something I'd thought about but makes sense lol! I've got a fretless Thumb 5 Broadneck that I occasionally play on Sunday at our church. However I use flats on that and the tone seems to fit in nicely.

.... great build thread. Please keep it updated when your friend takes ownership, I'm sure they'll be well chuffed.
