Poor man's UA 6176 - Origin Effects DCX + Warm Audio Pedal76
jimbobothy replied to Byo's topic in Effects
... I'm currently running a board with an Origin Effects Bass Comp going into a DCX Bass ending with a Radial JDi and the folks at FOH have said the sound is very easy to work with. Depending on how the DCX is EQ'd will wary, but I tend not to have much grit at all tbh. Also sounds nice in my IEMs tbf. I was planning on having a Lusithand Alma comp at the end, to mimic the 1176 LA1A pairing, but not got around to building that board yet!!- 2 replies

… I’ve got two OC2s, but would hesitate to modify them. I know they’d be better for it sonically, but I seem to prefer originality. Let us know how easy it is to do, and a before and after sound clip would be very interesting to hear if possible please?

... just emailed Moog (via InMusic) and all the Subsequents were/are made at their NC factory. Maybe the last batch were rushed? Anyhow still sounds great however the QC is!!
-
… just checked and it has Made In The USA on the InMusic labelled outer cardboard box it came in. Out of interest I bought a DeckSaver for it and it’s didn’t fit (2 of them didn’t), the wood end cheeks were too deep for it to fit over properly. I’ll just use a sheet for dust and get a flight case to cart it about. Any thoughts on one of the Thor specific cases you can get off Thomann?

... yeah it was one of the last made in Janurary 2025 ones, and AFAIK made in the USA. Got a wonky key (high C) but plays lovely. I had a look at one for sale in a localish music shop used, and that was the same manufacturing date (I think the last batch made at the factory), and that had a loose pitch wheel, and had gaps were different to my one. More of a minor point, some of the controls had/have a pretty loose potentionmeter pot feel, function perfectly, just wasn't sure what to expect tbh. Either way the price was reasonble, I also bought a 10 year warranty and got £40 back for the wonky key, so for what it is I'll manage lol! I didn't think any of the Subsequent 25s were made anywhere else apart from the Ashville. The Mini Moog and Subsequent 37s are still made there I believe, but other ones I think are overseas now. I was tempted to either get a Sub Phatty, Sub 37 or Subequent 37 as the 3 octave keybed would be helpfull, but not having any warranty if not bought new (well and the price for a Subsequent 37) are putting me off ha ha! I also have a Novation Bass Station II and like that one a lot also.

… you can buy hand held strip heaters for this very thing. They do look a bit like hair straighteners, but are definitely not (you’d burn your hair if you tried lol)
-
-
… just tried it and when all controls are off. ie counter clockwise (either with the passive or active mode engaged) it’s pretty much unity gain between bypass and on.
-
… I’ve got one at home sitting on the pedal shelf. I’ll have a look later for you, I suppose it would depend on how much gain you have on the low and high settings? Presumably the effect bypassed would be the same as using the low and high gains fully off?
-
… what Moog do you have out of curiosity? Also what sort of effects do you use with it? I’ve a Moog Subsequent 25 (and a Bass Station 2) and not sure what kind of board to build for them? I know it’ll be music dependant, but just to point me in the right direction lol!

Hey, just seen the reply. The Cali 76 comps are not as warm as other comps. If warmth is what you are after, rather than light drive etc then an optical comp is what I’d go for instead. They, by their nature (design) have a slower response and I find fatten up your bass tone in a very musical way. A favourite of mine is the Lusithand Alma comp (now on their Mk3 variant, all versions are great). You could go down the route of an optical comp and a light drive pedal to give a bit of hair if needed? As far as I can tell, the Origin Effects 76 bass comps are clearer sounding and know for being able to be very quick acting. If you wanted a bit of drive (when pushed) from one of those, the V1 run at 9V would be the one to go for. As another option, the Origin Effects DCX Bass is a lovely pedal for EQ and drive of varying amounts, but a higher cost compared to eg full sized Spark Booster.

… some comps can distort in a nice way when pushed hard eg the V1 Origin Effects Cali 76 Compact Bass can distort when pushed in a way that some people like (and also add some compression), the Markbass Compressore is a valve based compressor, and when the gain on that is maxed it does lead to some nice light overdrive (with compression again lol). So you wouldn’t need a comp if you went down that route.
-
Yeah, I wanted the smaller size as when I plan to play it (at church) it’ll be in combo with electric bass, so I didn’t want to lug loads of extra stuff about. Also the price I got it for was pretty good tbh 👍🏻. The Grandmother was on my possible list due to the larger keybed, but I thought presets would come in very useful. Lastly reading the Moog forums, there seemed to be a few problems that could occur, so buying new with an extended warranty (don’t normally get those) seemed to be prudent! ps. I’ve also just pulled the trigger on a Novation BSII, and trying to find a DSI Mopho SE ha ha. I seem to have a Monosynth mania at the moment, no need for any polyphonicness for me 🤣

Hey all, Recently got one of these before the prices shot up! Great sounds can be had, would have preferred a higher level of QC but all works so overall okay. Now to see if I can transfer the lines I can play on my basses to this ha ha 😁!
