I hadn't played through an ABM for ages (not since the first EVO came out) until Wednesday night when I did and the sound was very unpleasant to my ears - very muddy with little definition and no true valve sound. If it's a straight choice then I'd go Ampeg also.

I owned one a few years back. I thought it was excellent. Great sound, to say the least. A lot of Musicmasters are used as recording tools rather than for live use - don't know if that's because of the image possibly. I wouldn't say it's any easier to play than a regular bass unless you have small hands. The neck width is quite wide for a small bass and mine struggled to stay in tune. I'd not buy one as a main bass, nor even as a back-up, but if I had spare cash and was wanting to add to a collection or was doing a lot of studio recording then I'd certainly consider one.

I come across a lot of players who prefer a jazz neck because they anchor their thumb over the top edge of the fingerboard when playing which limits the reach of their fingers. Switching to a style where your thumb is lightly anchored in the centre of the neck means that wider necks such as the Precision are no problem to play. Often it's ex guitarists who struggle with this as they've been used to muting lower strings with their thumb.

Wide neck does not equal hard to play and they are no harder to play than a Jazz - it just means playing with a slightly different technique. I find them very easy to play and I have quite small stubby hands.... and as for Stingrays being better for rock, well that's a pretty sweeping statement and I'm sure that some of the classic rock players as mentioned above might disagree!

It's quite a common occurence and you'll even experience it (albeit to a lesser extent) with high end systems. I find that on my system a tiny bit of both bottom and top end gets lost if I listen very carefully. Most of us get satisfactory results by altering the amps eq to suit.

As Dood says, you'll not get a better quality of product and service than OBBM. You name it, Dave'll make it to your exact specifications.

To confuse matters slightly, we did a charity all dayer on Monday and the bass player from another band was using a Nemesis 2x10 combo with a 75 reissue Jazz bass and the sound was amazing. I was very impressed and asked the sound engineer whether the bass was DI'd to the PA before the amp but this was not the case - all the sound was from the amp. I'm looking around for one now!

Another post in praise from me. Dave made me a very specific cable for my wireless system and it is soo much better than the original. Delivery and service, as usual, cannot be faulted. Cheers Steve

I had one and it was a beauty! Superb build quality and sounded brilliant. You won't regret it (although the tuners were not the best)

Fair point Spiky and I know it was a lot (was less than £100 but I'm adding a bit on for inflation) but there was no way I was going to muck around inside the amp when I had no idea what was going on in there and I now have a warranty from Panic for the conversion. Better safe than sorry for me when dealing with these sorts of things.
