1.
I generally call them 'tossers'.
Well, that too
2.
Also, why are a collective of young men or women who sing simple harmonies on stage called boy/girl "bands"? Surely a band has to play instruments of some kind?
Off the first online dictionary I could find... band[sup]1[/sup]n 1. a company of people having a common purpose; group a band of outlaws 2. (Music, other) a group of musicians playing either brass and percussion instruments only (brass band) or brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments (concert band or military band) 3. (Music / Pop Music) a group of musicians who play popular music, jazz, etc., often for dancing 4. (Music, other) a group of instrumentalists generally; orchestra So in the musical sense, then no, they're not bands. Always had a bit of a bee in my bonnet about that one too - always call them 'groups' myself.
3.
The best guitar solo I've ever heard is on Dead Milkmen's 'Punk Rock Girl'. Fans of Pink Floyd would probably go purple in rage at that. Excellence is a subjective quality.
+1, though as much as for referencing Dead Milkmen as for having a good point
4.
In one of my cover bands we used to do slither (drop d), followed by run to the hills. More than once I forgot to retune my e string and had to play run to the hills two steps higher on the bottom string. It isn't easy rethinking the part in situ considering the tough nature of the bvs!
I had the exact same thing on more than one occasion...same songs and all
5. + 1 for Skank's suggestion of California Uber Alles - that always went down a treat for us. Even people who weren't so much into the punk songs would ask who that was originally by.
6. Clash and Ramones always seem to go down well - also Peaches by the Stranglers; although we never played it properly I'd always throw the riff in during gigs to distract the audience while my guitarist was tuning, and it always got a cheer from them.
7. Listening to a promo copy of the new album - as always, brilliant bass tone, really noticable on the first track.
8. Saw them earlier, definately the best stage show I've seen from any band Lots of explosives, just the way I like 'em!
9. The intro to Baroque Bordello...and the moment he comes in on 'Just Like Nothing On Earth' really gives that track a kick in the happysacks.
10.
I'll give you a tenner for them.
I'll take no less than fifty. Sorry mate, but I'm afraid for me it is all about the money money money
11.
...her mate told me it's because last time you were round there you stole her pants.
If she wants them back she should try picking up the phone
12. I refuse to play it on account of the fact it's pushing the message of 'Money's not important' when - as discreet and Dave Vader pointed out - it quite clearly is, and she's profiting from the ignorance of the masses whose failure to question her motivation lead to this pile of crap becoming a massive hit. And also because she doesn't return my calls.
13. Haven't had much experience with pubs at this level (sending them CDs, posters etc) but I can certainly relate to a lot of this! Also, is it just me or does the promoter/pub owner sound a lot like Rowan Atikinson doing satire, NTNOCN style?
14. Never bothered me. I've got a lovely Fender P five feet away from me, but I always gig with my Squier VM Jazz when I can - I prefer the neck and the sound suits our material better. That said, it's a punk band...I'm sure there's people who'd look down on me for using the more expensive instrument to bash out Dead Kennedys covers
15. Not a problem for me...the pub owners are usually begging us to go and play elsewhere...
16.
Feline-he was either using a Yamaha bass (dunno which model) at that time, or this:- Recently sold at auction at the Stranglers Convention in London for about £3500 I believe-a Kinkade handbuilt acoustic bass.
I was about three feet away from the bloke who bought it - couldn't believe it fetched that much.
17. We do jobs around the country; if there's a gig that I really need to make it to then I have to book the day off just in case.
18.
Think yourself lucky that "a load of people come in"; I'd love to hear what that sounds like. Perhaps it's my playing..?
If they can hear your playing then you're definately doing something wrong
19. Trying to hit on a lass who I'd been talking to before playing, at one point in between songs I stepped up to the microphone to encourage her to come forward and dance a bit as she'd agreed to beforehand. Apparently, it is not advisory to drink heavily before such actions (though my playing was still on form) and apparently I came across less charming and witty and more heavily agressive There was also the time that I dropped my kegs and played several songs with only the bass covering up my modesty before throwing on some women's underwear that my mate had given me before the gig. Though that was far less embarrassing than the fact that the rest of the band took a smoke break seven songs in, so it didn't phase me too much on reflection.
20. Smallest was about three - we were playing punk on a bill with several metal bands, one whose members had a problem with out guitarist and singer and so badmouthed us to the other bands and punters. Plus most of them were/are stereotypical metalheads who refuse to believe that a song can be good if there's no unlistenable fretw***ery in it ¬¬ Biggest was only about seventy/eighty people - first gig I ever played as well. How gutting that it's only gone down from there
21. Happened once, the guitarist didn't have any spares so had to go and find someone who did. Me and the drummer improvised during this time - that is, he went off on one on the drums, and I tried to place some well known basslines over it interconnected with some improv Didn't seem to have gone down too badly, considering...one person commented that the guitarist should break strings more often. I'm not sure if that's a testimony to mine and the drummer's ability or a slight on the band's playing...
22. Dead Kennedys - Stealing People's Mail/Police Truck Cock Sparrer - Riot Squad Ah, if only
23. Guitarist in my old band was forever doing it. Most notable was Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth, where he'd be matching the thudding bass over the verse. Wouldn't have been so bad, but he tended to do it when he got bored - so you'd maybe get half the song with him playing it, then half the song where it was just me and the drummer (he wouldn't stick with it once he'd started either - he'd maybe come in halfway through a verse then not play it for the next one). Consequesntly, it sounded awful. Hated playing it.
24.
basically the drummer did four to the floor kick drum in EVERY section of EVERY song, except for the intro to one song.
Just like to point out that you ruined their set for me after posting that I hadn't noticed that before and it really started to get on my tits last night I loved the show, plenty of energy, setlist wasn't too bad either IMO - I'd have preferred more classic songs, but then I'm sure many fans (and as has been made obvious, the band) want to give the more recent material a listen, so it wasn't a bad compromise. Caught one of Adrian's picks (it smacked me in the mouth when he threw it, that is - upon bending down to pick it up I found another one, which I gave to the bloke standing next to me). One of the best gigs I've been to this year (even if it was quite a crush up front).
