1. I picked up a guitar the wrong way round first few times when i was a wee nipper, always a bit ambidextrous, dad made me play it right-handed, cos it was his guitar, and he played it that way. I still maintain that if I had learned the other way round I would now be the greatest musician to grace a stage Also, I could have had an upside down strat like hendrix, without looking like a nob who bought a lefty to look like hendrix (which i didn't do)
 2. Looks good, i'll take it.
 3.
It looks very..........organic.
Heh, I was going for the splurgy fender wildwood finishes from their coronados and acoustics. The wood is utterly filthy underneath so it was never going to be flawless. As for argos catalogue lusting, I had a thing for a Marlin Sidewinder in sparkly purple from one, back when I was about 10.
 4.
I love that green finish. Seriously. How did you do it?
Badly. I used an olive woodstain that still looked brown. And then the wife suggested I used a thin acrylic paint wash over it. That worked, so after it dried I slathered the whole thing in Danish Oil, and voila. Comes off with my big sweaty paws all over it, and looks like it was done 20 years ago rather than 5 now. Lovely wear on it.
 5.
Not rocking the encore logo then?
Nope, cos it was a Sunn Mustang (still is) 1989. Was technically my mate's til 1996 when I repossessed it from him for 30 quid beer money owed. He had already scraped off the decal by then. When I refurbed it, I couldn't find a custom decal maker to do me a Sunn Mustang, so it rocks a 70s fender decal now. If I could be arsed I would redo it with an original.
 6. My first bass, still my main bass, looks a bit different these days, but came from an Argos catalogue. Sad times if they don't have any anymore.....
 7.
I've never seen this shape of headstock on an Ibanez Roadstar - is it a transitional model from Roadstar to Soundgear? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1c31415729
Nah, there were loads like that in the mid-80s. There are as many shapes of roadstar as you can dream up.
 8.
Hampton Waterboard Club Reasonable sized stage to play on... Unfortunately the view the other way was a bit underwhelming!! A few more turned up later and we had a big rush to the stage about 11.30pm for the last few songs........well about ten dancers anyway! You get some gigs like this, those that were there really enjoyed it and tbh we played really well. I had a wander up to the bar a couple of times mid song to swell the crowd a bit hehe!
You know, if I saw a waterboard club, I too would be a bit scared to go in, it sounds a little too "specialist" for my tastes.
 9.
Isn't "H" Bb in some countries?
Weirder than that, it is B. Somewhere European, and there is still a B. Bach used it at one point as a signature inside the music (or so i read, may be apocryphal)
 10.
It almost seems like some people are suggesting we're all alike, though I'm sure that isn't actually what they mean. But one of the good things about this place is the variety of personalities and the interesting discussions that can arise from that. Occasionally threads can go tits up, but usually interesting discussions between people holding very different views can be had completely amicably, which is ace. The one thing we all have in common is the Bass, and even in that we still have huge diversity in opinions and styles.
I think it might be because when somebody antagonistic (in the wrong way) comes along, we nice stayed people, vaguely humour them for awhile, and when they refuse to stop, we ignore them. This doesn't happen in other places. We are here because we like the atmosphere, and we refuse to let anybody f*** it up for us, this is a good thing, I love you guys Yes I've been drinking.
 11. I carefully screwed bits of wood into all the walls in my garage, and then nailed carpets to them. Even did the doors and windows. I couldn't do the roof, as I needed to be able to get in there and get the stuff in it, so I just nailed some curtains up. It made bugger all difference, but it does look nice.
 12. It is nice here, but all of you claiming it's because we're all bass players have obviously not been to that other well known bass forum very often.
 13. The one that does what you want it to, every time you pick it up.
 14.
I agree with that but what if they have a harmonised line, say, played by 2 guitars and bass? Surely they couldn't do that just by ooh that sounds nice?
yeah they can, and almost invariably they end up using 3rds and 5ths, and it is a bit dull.
 15. Short scale, hollow body, lightweight tuners, bag of fishing weights in your strap. Job done.
 16. Only gripe I have with behringer pedals is that when the battery goes, the sound goes. Every other pedal I have had just gives you nothing when the effect is on. Behringers don't even give you the dry signal on the way through. Not good when your tuner runs out of juice mid gig, it involves a run across a stage with a cable.... Yes I bought a power supply now.
 17. I regularly gig a Sunn Mustang P-clone through a harley-benton amp Occasionally I put a Harley Benton EUB through it as well. Sounds good to me, knackers to labels, cheap stuff works.
 18.
What sort of treatments have you tried for your problems? Ever heard or tried The Alexander Technique? It focuses on all the problems you list as it helps to strengthen the core muscles as well as promoting ease of movement and efficiency rather than getting tense and complicating your movements. It might be something worth looking at! I've looked but alas I can't fund it being unemployed currently.
I too am too skint to afford a proper alexander teacher. I read all about it on t'interweb, and then pretty much applied what I read to how I move etc. and already have some benefits (if you'll excuse the awful pun ) Worth a go, and costs nothing.
 19.
The 'cricket bat' and Ibby suggestions are sound. As something a bit different, how about an EUB?
I was going to say this, I also have a fairly shot back, and a ganglion in my wrist that keeps coming back. Since I have been able to lean on my bass between songs and keep my left wrist up by my head I've had a lot less problems.
 20.
Must be something about elder devonians You won't be short of bass players in North Devon, it's riddled with them Just don't play Sex on Fire, I don't think the pubs of devon can handle that any more. You could ask Jon Wines, although I don't think he's forgiven you for leaving the last covers band you were in together
It's finding bass players in Devon that don't mind playing really obvious covers (I will never do sex on fire though) in the Cream, hendrix, Zeppelin vein. And aren't scared to play with me (and equally haven't before) and don't suck. Same with drummers, And I never left Wedge, I just moved, Jon never rang me.... might put them back together actually..... Sorry, end to thread Hijack..... I think you would hate my set-list marv.
 21.
Thing is when people hit their mid 30's they seem to think that's it, life is over, I can't write any more, I'm confined to covers. Trying to find people to do original material is incredibly difficult, which may explain why I'm in a band with a guitarist who's 23
Heh, and why I'm in a band with 2 16 year olds.... I like original stuff, I like the extended breaks between gigs. I have encountered an equal amount of egotistical tools on the covers circuit (which i've done a lot of). I am however probably about to hit the covers scene again (if i can find a like-minded bassist and drummer) as I am a bit skint, and reckon a 3-piece power trio playing obvious songs to drunken muppets could sort out my financial woes nicely. And I mean obvious, with my terrible singing and excessively long guitar solos which will go down fine in the pubs of devon. At 35 I have realised I can do both, quite easily, and one can fund the other. Both have their ups and downs, don't get free festival tickets off a covers band though.
 22.
Ta very muchly Myke. On Saturday night I'll be seeing That's what they looked like in 1967 anyway. One went on to become really rather famous ... but which one?
Thank you google image search, you are very useful, and I now know who these are. *waves arm, car appears, vanishes in it*
 23.
Most of my favourite bass players only ever played one bass for all/most of their career (Jamerson. Martyn Casey, Simenon, Danny Thompson on DB). Message there
heh, but did anyone ever give you that message Clarky?
 24. and this is what i did ten years ago, right at the beginning.... https://soundcloud.com/plastic-squirrel/endsong
 25.
So, the house move madness has died down and in an unexpected twist I got a music room all to myself! It turned out that the previous occupiers had knocked up a rudimentary loft conversion, so I've been banished up there. Gave it a fresh coat of paint and a new carpet, a bargain futon off eBay and it's looking awesome! And to satisfy Discreet, here's a panoramic view to prove it*: I just need to find some time to get up there and use it now! * Disclaimer: loft nowhere near as big/wide as fancy panoramic photo app makes it look!
Oh that looks big wide and fancy....
