Have used the very same set up and it does go very very loud, not sure if it's Reading volume though. On the other hand it does mean you can bring your cab and amp to the gig in one go single handed.
You can carry an 8x10 in one hand?!?!
mine was the very bass used on Too Shy by Kajagoogoo.
Really? I always though that was played on a Stingray?
I take a different view. If you want to chop and change a bass I'd go for modding a non vintage instrument. After a certain point in time the main purpose of a 60's Fender bass is to appear on the Antiques Road show in as original condition as they can.
Replacing the frets on a fretted bass so that it can be played is hardly what I'd call "chopping and changing"! But yes, it does depend on what you see as the medium to long-term future of this bass. If you want to keep it for another 10+ years and play it regularly, I'd say go for a quality re-fret. If you just wanna keep it long enough to sell on at a tidy profit - then obviously keep it as "original" as possible until that time. Which probably means that you shouldn't be playing it! Not sure I understand the mentality of keeping good quality musical instruments in the loft as an investment though...
Hi All, I know that this might sound a bit sacrilegious to some of you but I've never "got" the Fender Precision. I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to basses...
A slight contradiction perhaps? Know what you mean though. I've played bass for 30 years and only got my first P (well, Squier version) this year! I love it!

Back in the eighties and early nineties I played the Superwound Funkmaster sets - 30-90. Great at the time (or so I thought) but very little tone or volume. For the last fifteen years or so I have used predominantly 40-100s, which seemed the ideal compromise between the playability of the light strings and the booming tone of the mooring cables. Recently, I have found myself moving towards slightly heavier gauges. My most recent sets are 45-105s but next purchase may well be 50s!

You may also need to get the nut cut a little wider and deeper...

1980's 5 string - were they common/about at this time?
The Peavey Tim Landers TL-5 & 6 basses were about in the 80s
Yes. In fact Tim was the first player I ever saw using a five, at the London Bass Weekend in October 1987. Joe Hubbard was a close second, as he was next on the bill! This was at a time when everyone else wanted to be Mark King and the Goodfellow stand sounded like a typing pool.... But that's another story! -
Cool story Chris! It also looks very like the Status on the covers pics of Level 42's "A Physical Presence". Nice bass mate!
Gigged a Squier PJ Special I got for £60 and it cut through the mix like Conan through a field of daisies!
What you tryin' to say man?! Although I am in two bands at the moment, neither is quite up to gigging speed yet. Having said that the bass I've been mostly using with both bands in full rehearsals is my Squier Affinity P. It just does what I want it to do, and I look forward to gigging with it when the opportunity arises. The Status is in temporary retirement!
ive got to agree.. i really dont get this..its all in the fingers..? if Victor played a stingray hes not going to sound like Victor on a Foderaw.. yeah he may play the same licks, but the tone will be different..
True to a certain extent, but having seen that clip of Jaco playing a JayDee series II I'm not so sure... Would Mark King still sound like Mark King on a fretless Jazz?
I also know that other more mass produced basses have also been able to hit that target, but maybe less consistantly. But that doesn't mean you cannot find a gem, that way, every now and then.
Agreed. I currently have four basses. A modest "collection" by the standards of some on here, but for me it's a lot! Status series II worth about £1200 Cort Curbow 5 string worth about £300 No-name Jazz copy cost me £100 Squier affinity P bass cost me £65 Guess which one I play most at the moment? The P. It just feels right in my hands and sounds great. OK, the replacement GFS pickups help there, but the neck is just lovely. The Status is, of course, more versatile and a much higher quality. The J copy does that "J" sound which obviously no P will ever do. The Cort has another string, and three band active EQ.... But I love the P at the moment. There's no accounting for taste is there?

If you want something a bit special, the Bass Doc could make one up for you.... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=4905

Jaco Pastorius = Mark King shocker!!!! Is it just me, or did JP just look kinda "wrong" with that JD? Strangely though (or maybe not that strangely), it still sounds like Jaco. Close your eyes and he could be playing his Jazz. It's all in the fingers dudes...

Recently (well OK, a few weeks ago and I'm slow and lazy!) bought a used set of DR strings from Dave. Very prompt postage and the strings were exactly as described if not better! Good comms too. Great deal indeed! Highly recommended.

OK - courgettes it is then...

I think it's probably fair to say that the guy can groove... What amazes me is his incredibly light touch. He has tiny little fingers, his action is obviously very low and his strings light gauge - but he still gets a load of tone there... OK, it gets dull after a few minutes, but that doesn't make it any less impressive.
-
I do. The guy is the definition of cool. Kinda... He doesn't really do "subtle" though, does he?
Sledgehammer Fretless, pick, massive compression = one of the most awesome bass sounds of all time
Was there some octaver in there too?
If you want to buy a really expensive bass then go for it IMO. Also I don't get the obsession with getting a pre-amp.
BRX in "Marcus Miller knows nowt about bass playing" shocker!!
Flat is actually 2-10-2 Bass Mids High
Which is the setting I use pretty much all the time. Plug and play. No messing about with graphics or switchable parametrics.... Just a good clear tone straight out of the box. Bloody loud too. OK, it would be nice to have the ability to boost the mids a bit - but only for special effects. For a great, driving and authoritative tone this amp simply cannot be beaten in it's price range. And yes, the BFB cabs really do let them shine!!

Only done about 1000 miles. Part of a pair but the other one was punctured beyond repair. I replaced them with another brand and kept this one as a spare... a year later it's still sat in the garden! Too good to grow courgettes in...
add another £450 for the custom colour and your looking at a £2k bass
Yeah, problem is that it's your custom colour, and it may not appeal to everyone. I personally like it... but I also cannot justify owning another Status at the moment! Have a bump though...
