Interesting Alex commented on Reggae, as the only person i can understand how they play and sing at the same time is Sting. Early Police bass lines his vocal style sits in the gaps. So maybe start there at it may get easier ?
Which is pretty much how it works in the blues and many musical genres that stem from it. Most of the singers play guitar or keys and they alternate a sung line with a played line (mini-solo!). So in effect they are playing for half the song and singing the other half. As bass and drums are playing throughout the entire song it is much harder to sing at the same time - especially allowing for syncopation on either the vocals or the bass... I can do it and have done it, but it takes a lot of work and as others have said I always feel that both the bass part and the vocal part have to be compromised to accommodate the other. Unless you are Geddy Lee of course.

If everything about a particular bass pleases you, except the actual sound, then why not upgrade the pups? A decent set of replacement pups can cost less than fifty quid (especially if you buy used). If the upgrade leaves you feeling less than satisfied you can use the pups for something else or sell them on. If it makes your favourite bass just that little bit better, it's a win-win situation! I don't think many people replace pups to improve the re-sale value of an instrument, but to try to get something out of that instrument that they perceive to be missing. Some cheap basses can play really well, and the component that makes the most difference to upgrade (barring the neck of course) tends to be the pickups and electronics. Go for it, I say!

I don't have a J though. Not a "real" one anyway... Don't suppose a Cort Curbow floats your boat?
I have big bass and drums and a bleed for the rest.
Me too (if memory serves - it's been a while since I did a gig with full PA support and monitors!). Sometimes I like some prominent vocals too if I'm doing backing vocals. I like to have some bass so I can compare the "out front" sound with my own backline monitoring. -

Trying to play "By the way" by the RHCP on a J or P is rather a challenge. Also, the hammering-on section in Steve Morse's Cruise Missile needs an extra fret... There are some Fenders with 24 frets though!
That doesn't necessarily mean you've got reasonable taste - it could mean that someone else has got taste as bad as you.
Good point.
Non-self indulgence
I refer the gentleman to my earlier post. I'm still thinking about it BTW.
If pleasing an audience comes before that then you shouldn't be a musician IMO - become a clown or a f***ing juggler or one of those c**ts that pretends to be a statue or some other such "entertaining" bollocks.
Get off that fence and say what you really mean Rhys!!
There had better not be, such things are for Steve Hackett and Steve Howe, not proper non-self indulgent musicians like Steve Jones.
To indulge the non-self. Hmmmmm. I'll have to think about that one.

Good thread BTW.

I like music and I like playing bass. OK, I love playing bass. If I do something that I like, I am indulging myself. Indeed, it could be said that I was being "self indulgent". However, if at least one person in the band, or, (God-forbid) "audience" likes what I am doing; then am I not also indulging them? Mutual self indulgence. Can such a concept exist? Or do the two "selfs" (sic) cancel each other out and it simply becomes indulgence? Maybe the answer is for us to only do things that we don't like. Then we could never be described as self-indulgent. But then we are indulging someone else. Whom, I neither know nor care. I like to think that I have a reasonable taste in music. So if I like something, chances are that someone else will. Good enough for me! Am I making sense here?
To me the whole thing/band/performance sounds horrible from start to the train wreck at the end.
Me too. I'm no fan of C-Lo, but I have to admit that he did a reasonable job of salvaging a terrible situation.

I am also an EPQ supervisor and ET is spot on. To get good marks the report has to be critical and analytical rather than simply descriptive. That's the hard bit! But at the end of the day this is meant to be a challenging piece of work rather than just a student waffling on about something that interests them. I totally agree about using this site as a source of information though. Just be careful how you refer to it in your bibliography. As it is not peer-reviewed it can only really be regarded as "pers. comm." (Personal communication). Good luck though on a very cool research area!
OK interesting, I think you're being way too paranoid
Or have just been very unlucky in the past!
Variety is the spice of life... Best to be prepared, though.
Very sensible. Works for me!
I think that I must move in completely different musical circles to some people here!
Me too! But that is the great thing about this site. You get the full range from teenagers just buying their first bass to gnarly seasoned old pros and everything in between! That said, I guess that the majority (silent or otherwise) are the weekend warriors who play small to medium sized pub gigs for their bread and butter, with the odd hotel, function or wedding thrown in. YMMV, IME, IMO, etc.
