1. Physically swapped the speakers around and the one in the corner always has substantially more bass. I was aware of this when placing your bass amp but didn't expect it to be so apparent for small speakers at low volume. The difference is amazing, anyway, there is a room controll switch on the back and I set this to -4dB and they now sound balanced. Thanks for the pointers. BC is top ;-)
2. I am fine with people using my amp although it can have drawbacks. We organised a sunday evening jam at the local and it was great fun. I was looking forward to hearing my Trace V6 from within the audiance, and it sounded really good. However When the last band played( tha bassist had a '75 jazz reissue, just like mine), the sound coming from the amp was amazing. Much better than anything I had ever got from it, so I left the settings as they were and tried it the next day in the same room but it just sounded like me. The magic had gone. That's when I realised, it's al in the fingers ;-) I am still ok with people using my gear, just ask, and treat it well.
3. I'll try swapping channels tomorrow
4. When I swap the cables(that are going to the speakers)over, the characteristic sound goes with it. So, it's not the speaker settings, or the speaker its self(I mean monitor). I'm sitting 2.5mtr from the monitors, and I've only played at relatively low volume. The bassier of the two is in the corner of the room(15cm from the 90 degrees of the walls). the other is 15cm from a flat wall.
5. When my bass is plugged into line 1 of a Behringer MX602A it sounds different when panned fully left, to when it's panned fully right. Panned right sounds fatter, deeper and just bassier. Panned left sounded ok until I heard panned right. The mixer is hooked up to Yamaha active near field monitors. I'm probablyy missing something obvious. Here is how I connected everything. The monitors have quite a few adjustable paramiters so I kept everything to 0dB, but I'm not sure if that is the right/usual thing to do. I connected the monitors to the mixer with 1.5mtr guitar cable(unbalanced).I'd be greatful for any help. Cheers, Phil.
6.
Just looked at the ACG site and the four strings are zero radius and asymmetrical.....mmmm... got me thinking now!!
That's something I didn't know. So now you know it'll work-but how will it feel? I've only really spent quality time on my ACG and Yammmy TRB II 5'er and the asymetric zero radius felt easier/more natural to play. Thanks for sharing the build. Phil.
7. Trade offer PM'd. Swap my Scot for your German?
8. On the Rotosound site they give no extra info, which makes me think they are a 5 string set without the G. I've got an old 5 string set with a 130 gauge B. i'll check the tension before buying the Dropzones.
9. The bass is a CIJ 3 bolt on neck 75 re-issue jobby. I always check intonation when new strings are applied but it's always minimal adjustment. With the b changing to e I was expecting a significant change. The nut slot files will make the job easy but they are quite expensive. I play quite heavy handed and the action on my basses is on the high side. Whenever I've bought/traded basses on here I've had to higher the action, some of you guys must have a feather-light touch.
10. Thinking about tuning my jazz to bead and was wondering if anyone has tried Rotosound Dropzone sets. They are 65 80 105 130. Are they designed to fit the nut of a standard 4 string? What is the b like on a 34 inch scale? Reading other bead threads it sounds like i will have to adjust the truss rod, intonation and file the nut. I don't expect to miss the g-string much.
11.
Well I've finally started this! Not done too much but decided to change the head shape a bit. Made a rough template from plywood to see how everything lines up. I've made a couple of templates for the body but these aren't quite finished yet. Also thinking about fingerboard radius. This will be a 5 string bass with 19mm string spacing at the bridge so I'm considering a flat fretboard - though I've never tried one!! Anyone had a flat fretboard with a symmetrical neck or have any guidance on this?
Hi Jabba, That spalted beech looks fantastic by the way, great job. I was wondering which fretboard radius you chose, if any. My ACG 5'er zero radius fretboard with asymetric neck is easier to play and more natural-feeling than my YamahaTRB 5'er.
12. Hi Col 2, What condition are they in? If the compact is in top nick I can give you the asking price plus postage(to Holland). Just sold my Eden410 and want something to complement my Midget, but don't want to wait months.
13.
Hi I can do a P/J. The P is in the large soapbar I don't do the split cover but internally the pickup is a standard P Bass split coil. I don't do plates for the controls they are through body. The passive controls are volume/tone/4 way rotary selector. All the details can be found here. http://www.acguitars...-specification/
The 4-way rotary and vol tone combi is perfect for me, love the necks and the Graft Gallas has an unFenderlike shape which aI also love. Cheers, I think it's time to sort some funds out.
14.
Have a look at my Graft range it covers most of what you have mentioned. Alan
Hi Allan, I didn't see any PJ's on your site, but if you had one with a control plate for simple folk like myself I'd bite yer 'and off!
15.
Why so restricted by the jack position?
I dropped my first bass, some 20 years ago, and it landed on the jack making a right mess of it all. I've also had issues with loose jacks and dodgy connections. And I don't like the way the jack plug and cable come dangerously close to the floor when the bass is in a stand. It's probably all in my head ;-)
16. It's nearly midnight here in Holland and I just got in from work (I started at 07:00 this morning). Had a really busy day that went pear-shaped when I realised that my iphone had been stolen :-( Still got 16 months on the contract. Anyway, I've just managed to delete the phone via icloud and my provider has blocked the sim-card. Now I need to take my mind off it by thinking about something positive like my new bass search ;-) I've convinced myself I need a Passive PJ 5'er with the jack insert in the front of the body(by the vol tone controls and not in the side). I've got an active ACG with filter controls but it's too fidly or complicated to switch from one tone to another. I do love the asymetric zero radius neck though. My second bass is a Fender Jap Jazz '75 reissue( I changed the passive controls/pups for J-retro and Wizards ). The Jazz now has an imense tonal scope but again there just seem to be too many options for me to dial in the tone I want. I've been looking around for PJ5'ers but they're either too expensive(Mike Lull) or side jack insert or active. My budget is around 1000GBP or a trade for the above mentioned basses. Secondhand not new. Please cheer me up with some PJ pics. I won't be able to check the thread until tomorrow afternoon though because I don't have a smart phone ;-/ Cheers, Phil.
17. I was gonna buy one, but then i noticed that the image is MUCH bigger than the item for sale. It would have spruced up the ol' Man Cave nicely, had it been bigger.
18. I did a quick search to have a listen to the back catalogue of entries for the composition competition and went as far back as September 2012(I love Jamiemillsbass entry ; nice heavy ending). Was September 2012 the first competition? Cheers, Phil.
19. I was torn between Bilbo and Skol. I eventually went with Bilbo, it's the perfect sound track for that photo. It's the first time I've listened to all the entries(and the first time I've voted), and the quality of material is superb. Thanks to all who entertained me, that was a real good listen. I might bring the overall level down a bit by trying my hand, next time. This could be addictive...
20. What about a TC Electronics BH250 kinda bump
21. I ordered my midget from Alex about a year ago. It hasn't seen too much action, just rehearsals. It looks like new and works as it should. These days I'm splitting my signl and using a 4x10 for dry and would like the Compact for the wet side. The problem is I'm in Holland, so potential swapshoppers will have to be willing to post their cab. New, the difference in price is 35GBP so I'm willing to compensate with a payment of 20GBP. 22.
fixed best, bert
Is it fixed? No! It's on it's way to Paul's Bass Matters this weekend.
Also watch out for Tech21 gear which has separate 230V and 240V versions for use in Europe and the UK respectively. I found out the practical way; by blowing up a brand new RBI
I didn't know that. I have one of those BH250 amps(won't be taking it to England) ;-)
23. It was more for the fun, I wasn't thinking about an official paper ;-)
24. Why don't we use a decibel app to see how loud everyone is rehearsing? We aren't together until next wednesday so it's gonna be a while before I can post a value. How loud do you rehearse?
