So who talks to you when you get off stage?
essexbasscat replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Usually too busy with the other band members packing down the kit. In current band, everyone chips in until everything is loaded up to go home. We did have a guitarist recently that would only pack his own stuff away and then stand around watching everyone else being busy. He got sent to the Gulag T -
Peavey 400 Mark III/IV appreciation thread...
essexbasscat replied to razze06's topic in Gear Gallery
Sorry, no pics, and to be honest, I have a love/hate relationship with these heads. Love the power, flexibility, durability, and value; hate the weight. I have both a Mark III and a Mark VI head (don't worry, the VI still has a handle on the top ). I bought them from Craigslist ads for $75 and $100, respectively, a year or so ago (probably got taken a bit, but I was a newbie at the time and didn't haggle). I normally gig with the Mark III into a 4x8" SWR cab. I use an EH Big Muff Pi Bass Fuzz and the dual outputs (effected and clean) from the pedal going into the dual channels of the Mark III let me dial in just the right mix of dirt and clean. The 4x8" cab gives me good enough bottom, and I like the zing I can get from the 8" speakers. However, for larger venues, I also roll out a 2x15" Peavey cab (which runs about 40-50 kilos), and run bi-amped. The Mark VI has a parametric electronic crossover for its bi-amp outputs so I use it as the control head and to drive the 4x8" cab from the high frequency bi-amp output. Although I'd love to use the Mark III as the control head, it only has a fixed crossover frequency, so I take the low frequency bi-amp output from the Mark VI and plug it into the Mark III's power amp input, using it to drive the larger cab. When I use this configuration and crank it, it sounds like Armageddon has arrived. Granted, the number of places I can use this setup is minimal, but it sure as hell looks impressive with two big old Peavey heads capping an almost two meter high stack of amps and speakers. That being said, I'm not getting any younger and I'll probably be looking for one of those wimpy Class-D things soon, if only to reduce wear and tear on the body. I guess that means I'll be saving the Peaveys for special occasions.
I would love to try that setup for a bit. When I next play a festival, that's got to be the one ! Anything less than a festival and there would be too great a risk of being prosecuted for killing things with sheer audio power ! T -
Of course, there would have to be a reserved room for the SVT rigs...... T
Best we leave it a few months so they're not too close together? - I'm fine with telling people whats gonna happen if we have a decent venue. Like - anyone who sits on their own amp slap bassing the sh*t out of their own instrument all afternoon with no thought for anyone else, like a certain person did at a previous bash, will get ejected!! lol lol - I am, as you can see <<<<<< fitted with lazers!
Would it be a problem if an Anglia bash happened soon after the London one ? different folks are likely to go, so quick repetition may not be an issue ? If the venue is chosen carefully, volume problems can be minimised by thoughtful, planned, amp placement T

Whereas I always say PEAVEY MK IV SM400 SERIES HEAD head should cost around £100, or less. See the appreciation thread get a couple of 8 ohm cabs, perhaps 2 cabs of 1x12. There's a couple of black widows hanging around here recently this rig will collapse houses, have buckets of tone and cost all up under £300 You know it makes sense ! T
What have I missed?
Have a look at the London Bass Bash 2010, where the whole committee thing was chosen, then dumped. As a result, the whole thing went down to votes for practically everything. As a result, the whole process took nearly five to six months. After that experience, I almost took a blood oath never to do that approach again to one of these events. I'll be happy to share my experiences and help out where I can with anyone that takes up the job of organising this one. However, I don't want to end up solely responsible for doing this one, the last one was only a month or two ago ! T
All sounds good guys. Im up for helping organise if you guys like but Im probably not the fella to lead this. Do we need to sort some kind of commitee?
Here we go again T

I'll come if at all possible, will be able to say more when the date is posted. I'll ask the folk I know in Cambs if there's any place they know of that may be suitable T
I'm sure the last time I played this at a reading gig it was written with 3 or 4 flats (Eb/Ab) maybe? (Using Ab Mixolydian/Ab Major by alternating between G natural and Gb) It was a long time ago though. Can't really remember :S
Had a busk along with it earlier and found the recording above in C#. Perhaps the gig you were doing had it transposed for the evening ? The record doesn't give me the impression that the speed has been messed around with, as it sounds clear and steady. Mind you, I could always be wrong, as I havn't checked the song's history properly. They could have gigged it in Eb or Ab perhaps ? T

Does it deserve the honour of being named as a 'classic' bass line in anyone's opinion ? T

OH MY GOD, MY VERY FIRST BASS Never, ever seen another one before in 38 years ! I never new it was called this.. I have one of these on top of the cupboard in my bedroom. It's the first bass I ever owned, the first one I ever gigged, the one I learned Crossroads on, the one I used while eyeing up the Precisions I couldn't afford at 12 years old. My very first bass, one of these. Just so blown away to see another one of these still around. Thanks for the trip down amnesia avenue T
Since "the enlightenment" I have burned all the records and CDs I had by artists who coned us by using none SVT amps. I realised as a bass player there are a few of us that have previously been foolish enough to use Pods & the like to get the sound we want (I know there is one member here who only uses a Pod for amp duties!). Worry not a few of us are hard at work on the Dave tribute non solid-state SVT bass pod: B
Now, where do I plug in again ?
I'd always wondered who was the owner of this.
No, it's still not quite right. Can you just add a bit more to the mids please ? -
That's the thing, I'm trying to get a definitive answer of how heavy the Gotoh's are. If the bare tuner is 64 grams that'll take about 40gram off each tuner, not accounting for the fact the sleeves and screws may be lighter also. Looking just at that, I'd save 160 grams from the headstock. Taking two tuners out saved me 210 grams and was about enough. Would 160 grams do it? Hmmm. If the Hipshot bare tuner weight is 47grams, going by what I can find online, I'd be saving 232 grams from the headstock, again not accounting they may come with lighter sleeves and screws. This would solve the problem. And they are a fair bit cheaper. But as you say, it'd be nice to have standard-look tuners. The hipshots do look dreadful. Plus the Gotoh's come in reverse, to retain originality. You'd never need to take them off again. Thanks dude I think I may do this. Any chance you can do me a huge favour and take one out to see what it weighs? (On it's own, and with sleeves and screws) I'll know for sure how much weight I'll be saving then. No worries if not. If I decide to plump for the Gotoh's, do you want to come in on the order to save on postage essexbasscat?
That's really thoughttful and I appreciate the offer and the opportunity. It's come along at a bit of an awkard time however, as I'm committed elsewhere at the moment. I'd still be very interested to hear how the experiment works out though. Once again, thanks for raising this post, it's certainly given me something to think about. If the Gotoh's do work out, I will invest in some at some point in the near future, 'cos as far as I'm concerned, my RW P is a keeper T
