I think that this thread is a disgrace!!!!! Well, I would if I didn't own 8 six string geetars myself.

[NOT ANY MORE!] Spector Euro SSD NS5crfm Fretless Cherry Black

Phew! Thanks everyone, very interesting reading, if a little 'heavy'! I'm sure I could get my head around this stuff if I sat with a tutor and had them show me in person - maybe that's the way to go. Bilbo: If you're still around - why do you use Mixo and Dorian? I assume that it's a case of Mixo for major chords and Dorian for minor, but how are you deciding that?
-
Bummer! How about if 100 people accidentally drop a tenner in the vicinity of thunderthumbs front garden without realising, and then later in the day his bass gets stolen but it is never reported??? We should all get a number and do a 'virtual' draw just to see who would have won! You can count me in on that one.
-
I totally get the 'construction' of modes, (years trying to get my head around the subject!) but I just don't get the application. Bilbo: So you use them all the time - can you give me an example (or two) of how you are using them with a couple of bits of music?
-
I hang around on a guitarist forum for impressive shreddy types (not me!) and it's always 'this mode' or 'that mode'. Way over the head of a simpleton like me unfortunately. Anyway, I've been reading about various bass stuff here and there and I guess that I was a bit surprised to hear of bassists using modes as well??? I thought they were all about soloing all over stuff and not underpinning it. So who uses modes around here, and what is the application on bass? I'm afraid I'm still on root/octave/5th terrain myself.
Right.......role call: 57 "notice of intent" as at this list, so 43 to go. Those marked with a "?"........reading your posts, I'm not sure whether you have actually confirmed you'd want one or not (should it get the go ahead), so could you clarify that for me please. Cheers. ... Golchen ...
Note: I'm not actually 'in' at the moment. In my yoof I used to gamble a lot on fruit machines. These days I don't generally gamble at all in any form - which doesn't mean I won't bite! The way I see it, this sort of thing isn't really a gamble, it's me giving away a tenner to someone I don't even know. That in itself isn't too big a deal, but I'm still left feeling do I (effectively) flush a tenner down the loo or do I go and buy something with it?? Not that a tenner is much these days.

If you have the money and the space then I see no problem with it personally. I like instruments and I love the buzz of getting a new one.
-
I don't get it with the tone pump? I have been to several forums where many people seem to criticize it??? If it's that unpopular why have they persisted with it? It's all very well saying that it's that people are using it wrong, but the fact still remains that a lot of users don't like it!

Whaaa???? ................................. never thought I'd see that from Fender!

If money and space were no object I'd definitely have it! Looks wonderful. As it happens, I do have the money, but I wouldn't part with so much over a fretless as I'm crap at playing them, and also I have a cheapo which is good enough for my current level of interest. On the other hand I don't have enough space for another bass. -
Interesting idea. I don't actually like thumb basses so I'd probably just stick it on eBay if I bought a ticket and won. Is that horribly cynical? I can't see this as a 'way forward' because people will only bite once or twice on this sort of thing. Nice idea for an occasional though. How would you ensure the draw to be fair? I'm not particularly in favour of names in a hat in this day and age?

I use an old 'red' pandora that I got cheap off eBay years ago and I really like it (much prefer it to the new version, which I also have). I take it along to shops to check out basses with one of those tiny, clip on ipod shuffles loaded up with my favourite 'play-along' songs attached. A handy little set up! Anyway, looks like you're sorted now.

A drum machine adds much more fun to the equation. I just got one of those Roland RX practice amps. I love it, sounds great AND has a built in (limited) drum machine.
I always felt very sorry for Chapman Stick players. I mean... it must be like taking a shed load of maths homework back for the weekend, or something.
What???? and you don't think that non-musicians think the same of bass players?

I really fancy a Spector bass right now.
-
Yup. Can definitely go off.

I love the finish/wood but I just totally can't cope with that shape. Singlecuts are totally not my thing, but if you (or anyone else) love them then great!

I knocked this up a while back as I wanted something that represented the fretboard as I look down on it:

Wow, I would be major interested but Birmingham is a bit of a trek from Luton.

4 strings sound better than 5 string basses. Discuss.
Golchen replied to EBS_freak's topic in General Discussion
I voted 5. I was playing along to a track during my lunchbreak today, and I found that I had way more control on how the lowest E sounds when playing it on the B string as you can half mute it, totally mute it, slide up to it etc etc. And especially useful when slapping about in E. -
Just got a Roland bass cube RX for practice. Still gassin for another bass. Either a Spector or (shock!!!) a new Status to my spec - Shamefull really, a player of my mediocre talent shouldn't be allowed ........
