1. I seem to recall reading once that Classical acoustic guitarist John Williams gets so worried that he physically throws up before every gig! My boss said that he once went on a training course for public speaking, and they had various tricks or ideas to calm you first. All that I can remember off the top of my head was running real fast on the spot for a while just before (eg in the loos if they are empty!?!) He said that it actually works, and he even once sprinted around the building before going in to chair a really big meeting - I kid you not!
2. Started with piano, then guitar, then got a bass, then Chapman stick, recently got a drum kit. I'd like to get a mandolin, banjo and accordion as well but the wife is sick of instruments around the house! I told her I was sick of kids around the house so it's currently a stand-off! My main influences to play bass were Geddy Lee, Billy Sheehan and later Stu Hamm.
3.
I am mostly liking pretty much anything before 1970. I am mostly not liking pretty much everything after 1970.
So you have no opinion of anything produced IN 1970?
4. Personally, I don't trust people on eBay who can't spell or use reasonably correct grammar (that's the best I can hope for these days!). Most of your interaction in life involves someones perception of you, so a wise man uses every available angle to influence that moment. I have that guy's card marked as 'low IQ'.
5. Bad experience there. I would have thought that in the current economic climate smaller companies would be trying to hold on to their customers. I'd write a snail mail letter to the top dog and send it recorded delivery, keeping it polite, factual and with an earnest tone, explaining your disappointment with them and the attitude shown. Any decent company would apologise and give you a sweetener .......... And I would probably be going elsewhere in future!
6. I never understand why everyone has to get on their high-horse over these lists. At the end of the day it's 40 interesting bass lines and I for one as a newbie(ish) to bass playing find it very interesting. I guarantee that if any one of you 'complainers' out there published your own personal top 40 list there would be 100's of bassists out there calling it crap. And furthermore, it's never going to work if a mag picks 40 totally obscure album tracks with great bass playing, so they go for numbers that are good AND a lot of people have heard them. They have obviously taken into account the inclusion of a fair few genres as well. I say instead of just fanning the flames, why not put the fire out and discuss great bass lines that 'we' would include on a list of great basslines.
7. BRAIN OVERLOAD. Too much knowledge for one sitting. Someone press my reset button
8. They look amazing. Actually there's one up on eBay USA at the moment with some really nice pictures. Personally it would worry me having that expensive a bass.
9. You talk a good talk, but a thread like this is nowt without pix!
10. I've just remembered another one - The parker Fly bass. The fly guitar looks awesome, but the bass just looks like a big fat arse with spindly horns to me!
11. Any bass designs that really turn you off? I love the Status classic shape, but I REALLY don't like either the Kingbass shape or the newer Streamline. I know that they are great basses, but if I won either they would be straight on eBay with barely a pluck in anger. I find both unpleasant to look at! Another one for me is the GB rumour. It's supposed to have a womans curves, but I prefer my women with a little less ass! It makes me think of one of those chubby assed women in a renaissance painting rather than a curvaceous babe. If I had a GB I'd go 100% for the Spitfire. In no way am I knocking these superb instruments, many people have them and many love and admire them. This is just a totally personal opinion on aesthetics and not intended to offend. Any designs that you lot don't like???
12. Heh! This thread has been really good for me. This is my first year of having a real go at bass after having them knocking around way down the pecking order for many years. I thought that things were going 'OK', but having recorded myself recently I was a bit shocked that timing was poor in a few places and I didn't even realise it whilst playing!?! Reading through the replies here, it seems that more experienced players have some 'issues' as well! I think practicing unplugged with any electric instrument is useful, I think that it's much easier to hear what you are and aren't executing cleanly. I don't do it all of the time but I certainly do it some of the time.
13. I don't know what a microbass II is and I can't be asses to google at 11.40pm. But I have to say that Garageband is a superb bit of free software for getting into recording. I can't believe how ridiculously easy it is to use! I bought a 'monster' cable off the internet for about £14 and I plug into that and go straight into the mac with no other interface. Not high tech but it gets a result!
14. Holy Bass Batman!!!! If I could get it dirt cheap I would fill it with blocks of wood and fix it up then get a pro respray.
15. I guess it's tough as a KISS tribute band in the UK as they aren't at all popular over here compared to the US. To be honest, the only song of theirs that I know is that Crazy nights thing. They are one of those bands that I'm always thinking I should get their greatest hits and see what they are all about.
16. I think that you need to post pix if you want to shift an instrument. I can't get that excited about an instrument without seeing it!
17. Nice lookin' bass. The thread title reminds me of an old joke: What's long and thin, covered in skin, red in parts and goes in tarts? .............. rhubarb!
18. It's a personal thing, but I'm just not keen on the Squier name. I am taking medication for my condition ............ EDIT: I'VE JUST WATCHED THE VIDEO (oops! bloody caps lock!) and I have to say that they compare very well indeed!
19.
The further symptoms include CPC (Cant Play Clean....it HAS to be distorted)
That's because it covers a multitude of sins!
20. LOL! Love the cowbell video!
21. Aye, can't beat a headless!
22. Wow! amazing collection there (not seen this thread before). Having recently tried a couple of Spector basses, I love the feel of them! I feel a bit miffed that I missed the boat on all those cheap ones that were on offer a couple of months ago. Oh well, c'est la vie.
23.
aye got it few hours ago, tis so lovely
That bass looks amazingly good value, what a great buy!
24. Hah! I'm the opposite on guitar, I can't learn anything to save my life but I can do horrible pointless noodling until the cows come home in any key you like. (Actually, that's a lie, I did learn Pink Floyd's Money many years ago and can still fumble through it, but that's it so far!)
25.
It is indeed awesome, I am a bit spoilt for guitars at the moment though, it was either this or the PRS to go, but this is mint and the PRS has a few marks.
I was just thinking that I liked the look of the PRS - you should have offered both and saw which sold first!
