1. I'd love a flea bass, but I only play 5 strings
2.
Well yes - a lot of tools certainly helps, but after machining and jointing the neck and body blanks, which you might be able to get a local woodwork shop to do for you, I used a router, pillar drill, spokeshave, block plane, a fine hand saw and an electric drill. And a selection of cabinet scrapers and chisels, marking knives etc.... Sure you need some tools, but there are plenty of guys on here who do lovely work in their front rooms / garages / back yards with the minimum of stuff
I'm lucky, I have all of that at my disposal! (as well as a band saw and a metalwork lathe!) My dad is something of a master craftsman and has an extremely well kitted out garage. Incidentally, the Lathe is about 7 ft long and cost 50p - purchased as scrap from his old job at british aerospace, dismantled completely and then put together again at home. Time is my biggest issue - job can be demanding, 1.5 - 2 hrs driving per day and 4 kids + wife to entertain!
3. Fantastic basses. I got mine a couple of years ago and love it.
4. Wow - very nicely done. I'd love to take a crack at making instruments, I'm sure that I have a reasonable set of skills for the job.
5. Ahhhh ..... it's gone. A mighty fine bass, I was severely tempted (enough to head twice to the Gallery to try it!) but it wuz unfortunately a price tag too far for me. Glad to see it's going to a good home.
6. What a bummer! It never ceases to amaze me that someone will actually walk up and steal someone's instrument. And incidentally, you really should keep a decent record of all serial numbers for instruments that you own!
7. If only it were white or cream .......................
8.
................ Stood up to look over the stack of amps in the shop & it was Pino Palladino!
Great story!
9. I always feel really conspicuous in shops so I tend to play with headphones on. I take my old pandora to plug into and also take a mini mp3 player that I plug in as well so that I can play along to a bunch of my favourite tracks.
10. I have a parker fly classic guitar and it is totally amazing. The feel is brilliant, most uniform fretboard ever, it is superbly light and I love the shape. (Actually there's a couple of vids of me playing it in my link below) I haven't tried the bass version, but boy did they get the shape wrong - it just looks like a great big fat arse to me! If anyone wants to try one there was one in the Gallery a couple of weeks ago (5 string I think)
11. The first bass look crap. The second one looks amazing. I'd have that!
12. People around here need a reality check. Business is business. Fender make relics because they sell. They sell because a lot of people like them. They are priced at a point that people will pay and Fender make a profit. I for one like the relic look, I saw the strats and the Tele in a shop the other day and I thought that they looked pretty OK although obviously short of the custom jobs (but way better than cheapo stuff like 'Vintage' put out). Guitarist mag reviewed the strats/Tele and ultimately thought that they were 'genuinely very very good guitars' so I don't see why the basses should be any different. And personally, I find the cost less offensive than the astronomical amount you pay for a really top-end bass eg 2.5K+
13. Amazing live band. Saw them way back when they were touring their 3rd album. Their songs are really written to play live, and they are one of those groups that really deserved a lot more success than they have had.
14. Waste of money. No disrespect to JE intended there, but I'm sure if he were here he would agree. The phrase that springs to mind 'a fool and his money are easily parted ......'
15.
Why don't they make a bass this colour
Because no bugger will buy them.
16. I bought an old Korg pandora PX3B (the red one) cheap off eBay a few years ago. It's brilliant for practice and portability, I always take it to shops with me. You can tune with it and it has a bunch of backing rhythms that you can change the tempo on. I got the new model when it came out (the one for bass + guitar) and I didn't like it as much. Where's the new one now - on loan to a nephew, I kept the old one!
17. I find that getting new gear is a real thrill! It's exciting, it spurs my playing off to greater heights (whatever instrument it is). What's more, the thrill of the chase is great too. You have money in your pocket and spend a long time trying stuff and looking out for just the right thing. I've been scouring the for sale section for a bass for the past 5 months with cash in hand!
18. Woah! Nice bass. I am soooooo close to almost being tempted!
19. Congratulations, you are about to hit 4,500 views. Is this a record! I've tried the bass twice actually, and it really is a beauty. I guess that it's just a bad time to shift expensive gear.
20. That sounds like a great deal to me. I'd be very keen (not that I need another strat!) but for the colour. Loud coloured guitars just don't do it for me.
21.
Go for an older Status SII or a new S2-Classic & you're in another ballpark altogether. As for the SmartBass, they're pretty good, but it depends on how much you're willing to spend on options. You're better off going just a little higher in price and getting a bolt-on S2-Classic. Once you've played one of these, you'll never look at a MM again! Rich.
+1 I have an S2 classic and I love it. I tried a couple of musicman basses recently and just didn't go for them at all. I was a bit disappointed as I thought they would seem amazing to play. I'm sticking with status!
22. That wood/finish look gorgeous! Shame that it's been wasted on such a hideous shape.
23. When a feminist said "Sexism - we should make a stand" I fear that she was sadly misinterpreted .... Come to think of it, I think that this stand was mentioned at the 'Golden globe' awards .....
24.
Hey Anndra - very nice but I wouldn't buy a guitar with a crack in the neck
LOL! Good one. Life isn't fair. Why can't women see men as sex objects???
25. Yup - totally illegal. Infringement of copyright. So be sure to not do it, and when you have finally got around to not doing it be sure to send me a copy of what you haven't done. This conversation did not happen.
