1. Play as much as you can at home learning as much as you can. Go onto band's websites and look at their setlists, some songs will appear again and again so learn those. Personally it was joining a wedding band that wasn't afraid to jam a song if asked even if we'd never done it before. Ok it would never be perfect but it gives you more confidence and you go home and learn it properly. We've been together now for 20 years minus an 18 month hiatus where we all went off a did other things and we never rehearsed for 15 of those years. New songs and songs for first dances were all learned on our own and played at weddings together for the first time. Different bands will play songs differently. Even something like Brown Eyed Girl I've played 3 different arrangements of it. When I dep I have to remember what version the band I'm playing with that night does. I might have been lucky or just never been asked but I haven't had to sight read anything for 20 years.
2. It's the second time it's been listed as well. I'm about an hour away from the seller, if it had been a 5 string then I'd have bought it.
3. Back when I was a lad and only recently began playing weddings we were at a venue we played a lot back then. There was this couple who kept kind of dancing up to me and then going back again. It was quite funny at first until they began getting too close and hitting the bass which obviously deadened the notes. Plus you know how careful i am with my basses. After so long the singer announced that if people kept on doing it then we would stop playing. Obviously this couple either didn't hear or thought that they were being funny. We began playing again and i clocked them coming towards me again so just at the last moment I moved my bass out of the way and punched the guy full force in the chest. The result was a huge cheer from everyone else and I never saw them again for the rest of the night.
4.
I wouldn't describe the Rumble 500 combo as a practice amp Try one - you'll be surprised at the sonic weight it delivers Edit: It's also very competitively priced
At one point I had a Gallien 1001RB II running into a Trace 4x12" and 2x15" but it was just silly and far too much for every gig I ever did. I have been using a Fender Rumble 500 combo since the start of the year. I also have my Laney NX115 cab in case I need to use it for larger gigs. If you look at my sig the Laney cab is for sale - The Fender is plenty loud enough and I'm not even close to pushing it. BTW I stand right next to our guitarist on stage who plays through a Blackstar head into a 2x12" I don't think that this amp is the be all and end all but it works perfectly with my Yamaha BB425 (and soon to be BB1025) playing the kind of disco, dance etc music that I play with the wedding band. With a P with Chromes it sounded rather flat.
5. I know that it would just be a matter of lightly running some steel wool up and down the neck a couple of times but I would only do that on a secondhand bass not a brand new one. I bought the tobacco burst one but they don't have any more in the UK. They do have a caramel brown one that I actually really like so I've asked if they can swap it for that but I would need to have it by Wednesday 29th in order for me to do a string change and setup in time for next weekend's gigs. I'll see what happens
6. Bugger - got it yesterday and had a good look over it. Body is flawless, love the metal nut and prefer the bridge on this compared to the 425 but There's something badly wrong with the neck, it's rough as a badger's. Like it hasn't been finished properly. I though it was polish or something but a light wipe hasn't taken it off. The place I bought it from has found one at a distributors in France that they can get me but I'm in two minds now whether to get it swapped or return it and stick with the 425 and get a set of Hipshot Ultralites. I'm not going to do anything rash I'll think it through logically and make a decision on Sunday.
7. I love it - I would need to go the whole hog and have the matching ZZ top inspired furry bass and a pair of Chewbacca boots. Then probably a big afro wig and star shaped sunglasses. Actually this could get out of hand
8. My personal favourites would be either Daphne Blue or Dakota Red
9. I tried both on my Precision but preferred the blend. In fact I used the blend more than the active 2 band active EQ On the Yamahas it's a pickup switch similar to a Rickenbacker and vol & tone. I run everything full on and it gives me the best sound.
10. I'm planning on buying a set of Ultralites for my BB1025 when I get it tomorrow. They offer 1/2" and 3/8" sizes. How do I measure to get the right size? Is it the size of the hole (with or without the ferrule?) or the tuning post?
11. Just realised that I haven't bumped this in a while.
12. We've been asked to play You're My Best Friend for a wedding in two weeks. I hadn't really paid close attention to it before but stumbled across the isolated bass track and it's not even close to what I would've played had I not heard it. I had never been so excited to get to a rehearsal as I was tonight to play it. Fantastic bass line. I still rate Queen as one of my favourite bands and JD as one of my favourite bass players. There's loads of gems from Millionaires Waltz to the run in Dragon Attack to the bass solo in Liar.
13. My first gig will be next weekend. That'll give me time to change the strings for a set of D'addario EXL165-5 same as I have on the 425, set it up and fit a set of straplocks
14. I've made a decision and ordered a 1025 in tobacco brown sunburst. It's the sensible choice for me given how well it fits in with the band & material that we cover and will make my 425 a very capable backup.
15. Out of interest, does anyone know how the neck on a TRB1006J compares to the BB 5 strings ? I might have the chance of one of these or may even go for a 1006J depending on the neck
16. I'm really struggling just now whether to go for a 1025 or stick with the 425. The 425 is about 90% of what I want sound and playability wise. If I had a negative it would be that it's quite heavy but I think it could be more to do with the slight neck dive causing me to have to hold it and this in turn giving me a sore shoulder over the course of a 4-5 hour gig rather than the actual weight. I have a wide neoprene strap that I've used for years so a strap isn't the answer. I wonder if a set of Ultralights would help matters? I have the money to get the 1025 now but I'm wondering if it's going to be worth it to me to pay more than twice what the 425 cost me to get that extra 10%, even 5% would do.
17.
For those so inclined, this is what it would look like with tortie plate (although mine is the passive, later model FSR). To buy mine you will need to wait and discuss it with the executor of my estate!
Shows you how completely different it can look with a change of scratchplate. I'd personally rather stick needles in my eyes than put anything tortoise shell related on my bass but that's why Heinz give us 57 varieties I'd like to add that a Yamaha BB1025 and Corvette $$ 5 string to the list of possible trades as well. Any basses offered for trade must be in really good condition as well. I don't get on with scratches of any description and I like my gear to be pristine.
18. Feel free to throw some offers my way via PM if interested. Remember that these are top quality cabs and not to be confused with the more budget Richter range
19. I am open to offers on this bass and have a figure in my head that is the least I would take so send me a PM with any offers. Same goes for trades, although I've listed Stingray style basses as trades you may have something of interest to me. I am looking for a 5 string but could be interested in a 6 depending on the size of the neck. I could even do a trade with the bass and the Laney cab that I am selling as well for the right bass
20.
That's really lovely (although I suspect I wouldn't get on with such a Jazz-like neck). Falls immediately into my "if only" category. P
I didn't think so either having come from 5 and 6 string basses but it's still thicker than the neck on my Ibanez Doug Wimbish which gave me terrible cramp the neck was so thin
Lovely oolour. Similar to the billy Sheehan attitude . Have s bump
I've had a lot of people come up to me thinking that that was what it was
Noooooooooooooo don't do it Delbert. Madness I tell's e
Yeah I know but had there been a way to make it a 5 string I would've done it. Couldn't even tune it B E A D as I need the high frets on the G string. Some of the songs we do I need the three notes below the D and they would be virtually impossible if I detuned as low as that. You never know, things might change and I might need it for something but I've never been one for holding onto anything that I don't use and I can't see any use coming it's way.
21. I've wanted one of these for ages. I think they look so much better than the newer version
22. This is it in it's original form to show the original scratchplate. These pics show off the colour better. 25. After a lot of thought I’ve decided to put my MIM Fender FSR Precision Special up for sale. This bass was a limited run of 250 with 150 coming to Europe. This bass also coincided with production of the Geddy Lee Jazz moving to Mexico and it is rumoured that the neck on these is the same as on the Geddy Lee bass. It’s certainly very slim and measure 38mm at the nut and looks to be 18-19mm deep at the first fret but it’s really hard to measure exactly The bass features an alder body finished in seafoam green with maple neck. The fretboard is bound as well as having the black blocks. After a few months of ownership the preamp became faulty so I took the opportunity to try something else. I tried numerous pickup and preamp configurations before settling on a set of EMGs with a BTC system preamp consisting of volume, blend and treble/bass stack. This is the quick connect setup so it’s really easy to work with. I found myself constantly detuning the E string so bought and fitted a Hipshot D-tuner. I also never liked the bridge so this was also replaced with a Gotoh 201. I also fitted straplocks and it’s been strung with D’addario Chromes. I recently fitted a mirrored scratchplate which has the usual 3 holes rather than the 4 that came with the original one and had to remove some of the wood nearest the back to get the blend control in. I used this bass playing with the rock band as well as while depping with various wedding/function bands and it always delivered on sound having such a wide variety of control available on the 2-band preamp. In terms of condition, if you’ve seen some of my posts in the past you will be aware that I hate dings, dongs, relicing of any description and even what could be considered wear from general use. This bass is in immaculate condition and I mean immaculate. It’s in the same condition as when it was made it’s that immaculate (did I say that it was immaculate?) This is without a doubt the nicest looking and playing bass that I have ever owned but playing in a new wedding band means that only a 5 string will do as there is minimal time to change basses during the set and I prefer using the same bass for levels etc. This is the only reason that I am selling this bass as I haven’t used it this year and can’t see me being in a situation where I am likely to need it. This bass came with a Fender branded gig bag but I’ve kept it in a Hiscox case since I bought it. The case has some marks on it but is in mint working condition, nothing is broken, all of the latches work properly and the key is still taped to the underside of the flappy cover thing inside. I know how much this bass cost, how much the changes I made to it cost and how much it means to me and how immaculate it is so the price is going to reflect this. I am looking for £800 or best offer. Postage will be extra and I will only ship it in the case. For collection or meet up I am happy to supply it in the original gig bag instead for less. As far as trades I'd be interested in I'd be looking for something 5 string like a Musicman Stingray, Sterling or G&L. Here come a lot of pics – the ones nearest the bottom show the original configuration with the original scratchplate which will be included but one of the screw holes is redundant. I use a dummy pot in there.
