I cannot find the article I read only yesterday from a studio sound engineer going all scientific on me and saying special kit was needed etc etc, but I did read it, honest. :-) My question really arose out of the fact some of the sellers on here appear to be going back to 4s as they are struggling. My only complaint with mine is the low tension strings so I may put flat wounds on it. I am used to those on my P bass, my main player at the moment.
I use D'addario Chromes on my Precision - 40-100 gauge but I wanted rounds on my 5 string so I looked up the tensions of each gauge and found that the EXL165-5 string set was the closest and it enabled me to drop the string height significantly - they're 45,65,85,105,135 and feel exactly the same tension wise as the Chromes
The only 5er I heard live that sounded any good was a 5 string Fender Jazz. Mind you, the chap doing the mix was a professor of acoustic engineering. Not knocking 5ers, but.......not for me.

The two 5 string Fenders I've owned were probably the worst 5 string basses I've played , everyone's different though.
The worst 5 string sound I ever heard live was a guy using a Jazz bass and it put me off buying another 5 string for a long time
I'm just curious about what other players like. I'm not really after advice about which to buy; I think they are all probably good basses in their own way and i will be trying all three out, plus any others which are suggested. I actually play in a few different bands, so could use each of them in at least one!
If you're looking for other suggestions then give a Yamaha BB series bass a try. I was very very surprised how good they were. I'm using a BB425 which is cheap as chips and am amazed at how good it is, not just for the money, it's just good. If I'm still of this opinion in a few months time then I'll be considering the BB1025.

I bought my first 5 string about 20 years ago after watching Nathan East playing a Yamaha TRB6 and making it look so easy. After a trip up to a 6 string I went back to a 4 string and used a 4 string exclusively for about the last 7-8 years until I bought my Yamaha BB425 at the beginning of the year. Personally I think a lot of it depends on what you play. The 4 with a D-tuner was all I needed at the time but I now need a 5. I don't see myself ever needing a 6 but I don't think I ever did. I may go back to a 4 in the future if my band changes, who knows? I think what I'm trying to say is that things change and you may no longer need what you used to have. I remember seeing Guy Pratt playing a Status 5 string with Pink Floyd but nowadays I've mainly seen him either playing his Burgundy Jazz, a Precision of some description or his Status thingy that he helped design.

I have a Rumble 500 and it feels as sturdy as any other combo I've had. I understand about bracing and lining the cab but I can't see how it would make it sound any better than it already is - I'm very happy with the sound of mine and wouldn't want to alter anything that would make it sound different. If you price match against some of the European websites you could have a new one for around £410 at the current exchange rates.

I had one of the MB combos and I've had several 700RB, a 1001RB and an 800RB. I couldn't get the GK growl from the MB but it may well have been due to the speakers. I also couldn't get it from the 1001 as I wasn't able to turn it up enough at a gig to get it. My favourite by a mile was the 700RB II

Fender Rumble 500 V3 - Got One? What's It Like?
Delberthot replied to Norris's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've had mine 3 months now. The first thing that struck me was how something so light and small can be so loud I'm using mine in a wedding/function band as my own monitor and have it sitting on one of these so it's at ear level. I find it very much a set and forget amp and I'm amazed at how quickly I found a great sound. I haven't bothered with the distortion or the other buttons, I only need a clean sound. As I mentioned on another thread here, go to a website like this to get a really good price, especially with the current exchange rate, then email GAK and they will price match it. For a cover go to Roqsolid. I had to submit measurements for this combo as the ones they had been given previously were a wee bit out but now they're spot on. -
When I returned my Midnight Blue Rickenbacker 4003 with the infamous runny paint that turned the binding pale blue to the Glasgow shop, they refunded me straight away. I would've taken another but they didn't have any more in store at the time.

A bit like 99% of the videos on Youtube of people playing along to songs - pure showboating, showing off and nothing like the record. The other 1% are people actually playing what was on the record An example of the 1% would be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QCJAvmJITc Which I am playing tonight thanks to this guy

Carting one cab will be easier than two as you only have one trip to the car but to put things into perspective that cab weighs about 12 1/2 stone or 78kgs. Try lifting one of your mates out of the house and into the car and it'll give you an idea of the weight. I bought an Ashdown MAG810 on Ebay brand new cos it was cheap and I'd always wanted one. It comes in 11kgs less than the Mesa at 67kgs. I lifted it twice, once into the house when it was delivered and once out of the house when I sold it. Never again. I used to use 2 4x10" at about 35kgs each and previous to that used 2 trace V-type cabs, a 4x12" and a 2x15" which were 46kgs each and they were a breeze by comparison - overkill though

Yamaha BB series - talk me through them please!
Delberthot replied to Paul S's topic in Bass Guitars
I bought my BB425 just before Christmas and it has done all but one gig this year effectively temporarily retiring my green Precision Special FSR for the foreseeable. I bought it as a stepping stone to getting back into playing 5 string again but to be honest I love the bass and the way it sounds and I'm now wondering if I need to go any further up the price list at all or stick with what I have. I couldn't get a decent action with the factory D'addario strings so I bought a set of D'addario EXL165-5 as they are roughly the same tension ( excluding the B ) as the Chromes I like on the Precision. Once fitted and allowed to settle I think I managed to drop the string height by 3-4mm on some strings. The 135 B was so thick that when I strung it through the body it wouldn't sit on the saddle when tuned to pitch so I fed it through the bridge and it's fine there. I have always wanted a BB5000 since I was a boy and with my 40th looming I think it's a contender for a present but I like my basses to look pristine but I can't see me finding one in mint condition. Are the pickups as powerful on the BB5000 as they are on the BB425 or would I have to go for the BB5000a? I think the BB-NE2 might be out of my price range, much as I love Nathan East's playing and his sound -
Neck depth is important for me rather than the width. Bought a G&L from Thomann that I simply could not play as the neck felt as if it was as deep as it was wide Slim C, Vintage C and so on mean nothing to me other than I'd guess the latter to be deeper

If you're recording then you may need a few different ones for certain sounds but live I think it all gets lost to an extent. But then think about the number of arguments there have been about what bass Geddy played on what songs recorded Unless you're in a Paul Young or Weather Report tribute band I don't think many punters would hear the difference between fretted, fretless, active, passive etc. I've lost count the number of big gigs I've been to where the bass player could've been playing anything. The answer for me has always been 1 but I've mainly played wedding/corporate/function stuff and there is very rarely the chance to check the tuning between songs never mind change basses I've just temporarily retired my Precision as I need the 5 string for the new band. I won't sell it but it's there for the next time I need it. I spent far too much time and money getting it as close to perfection as I want it just to sell it on.
Have you seen her live?
I've seen enough on Youtube to convince me that's she's not very good. I wouldn't waste my time looking for tickets, never mind going to see her

Before you buy another one look here then find another company that price matches European prices. I got GAK to match this price. I got Roqsolid to adjust the dimensions of the cover as whoever submitted the original ones had an eye like a stinking haddock. It was a mile off. Took me 40 minutes to get it accurate - they're also offering a discount as of today going by the email I received today.

I bought one of these myself last month. Don't worry about pushing it, you won't have to as this is one loud combo. I only had to use the 15" cab under it for one gig but that was in a room that held 400 people with no PA support and it didn't break a sweat. I am planning on doing a review of it but I want to do more gigs with it before then. Contrary to popular opinion, I use mine on a stand and there is plenty of bottom end, plus I don't have to run it as loud as I would if it was on the floor to hear myself. This one was at the gig using the 15" as well That was a very big room to have no PA support
Beyoncé can't sing? Do me a favour.
In a studio with lots of layering and autotune she might be alright but live I think she's terrible
-
Cool - I'm going to do it at the weekend. I normally use kitchen worktop veneer edging as it's not going to compress when I tighten the screws. I might be lucky and find that someone put a shim in at the factory as can often happen and removing this will do exactly what I need.

I've just learned Crazy in Love for a new band and while I enjoy playing it, I had to listen to the live version as this is the version that we do. To say it was cringeworthy would be an understatement. Great performer? Possibly. Great singer? Not live anyway. I think the idea being that if you fill the stage with enough people doing different things it will detract form the fact that you can't sing. And I heard stuff happening that I couldn't see anyone singing or playing. I too couldn't name a single song by old Westy but to do what he did is just childish. I agree he should start his own awards show where every award should be presented to Beyonce as she deserves it doesn't she? That would keep him happy and away from everyone else. Personally some rap stuff does sound pretty childish - the use of harpsichords, nursery rhymes, tired old rapper phrases, overuse of the word "yeah" Rock Star? Bollocks more like it. The ability to sample someone else's songs and add your dodgy, aggressive poetry over the top does not make you a rock star. There are a couple of exceptions but they are few and far between - eg Rage Against The Machine
His top is unbuttoned :-D Lots of top end zing The way he unbuttons the shirt on camera suggested to me that it was very tongue in cheek, a homage to the Kool and the Gang/Ladies' Night style funk that the song so heavily borrows from.
I didn't get that unfortunately - as soon as he did that I thought "what a tool" but I have aspergers so I say it as I see it

There are a pile of them but here's one that I noticed the other day

I've just gone through a similar quandry I was in a fantastic rock band. We played a few weddings during the year as well but I got talking to a group of guys I had known for years The short story is that we decided to get together to form a new wedding/function band. I'd have loved to have stayed in both bands but the wedding band is just far too busy and it wouldn't be fair on the rock band to dictate when I was free. Otherwise I'd have stayed in both bands

I'm in the process of setting up my Yamaha BB425 properly but the one thing I have noticed is that even with the string height adjusted, the saddles are still pretty high resulting in a huge break angle for the strings I've installed shims on basses before but only when the saddles have bottomed out before reaching the desired string height- is it possible to put the shim in the neck pocket at the end nearest the headstock to bring the angle back slightly so that I can drop the saddles? Would this have any adverse affect on the bass other than I would notice a slight gap between the neck and the pocket?

This is what I am using and I've not noticed any loss of bottom end, in fact there's loads of bottom end
