The last string I snapped was a B on Warwick Thumb 5 in 2008 because it wasn't tapered. Quick check with the Bass Centre and I had a tapered Elites 135 guage string on its way. Before that it must have been about 1998

Playing in a wedding/function band my main bass is a Musicman Stingray 5 string with a Yamaha BB1025 being my backup. I also have a Yamaha BB425 to practice in the house with and a Lindo 4 string fretless to remind me why I never want to buy an expensive fretless to gig with ever again

I played for years in a band with a drummer that could not control his volume and tended to overplay all of the time so I began wearing ear plugs to every gig as having a large china symbal battered right next to my left ear wasn't my idea of fun or going home with ringing in my ears. Thankfully I am now in the position of playing with a drummer who can control her volume and now only wear one ear plug in my left ear not fully in to slightly attenuate the high frequencies from the symbals. I am now enjoying things more and not having to crank the top end to hear myself clearly with the ear plugs in and the stage volume is at a sensible level now that we can all turn back down again. I actually have the opposite problem to most of having a fantastic guitarist right next to me who plays too quietly and it's only when he kicks in the boost for solos that I can hear him properly.

I've found that this is the case with a number of tutors. I've been trying to find a decent vocal teacher but no one has got back to me. I have absolutely no idea how I know what I do or how to transfer it to someone else or I would've gone down that path years ago as I am completely self taught and just played along to everything when I was young. There are no decent bass teachers in my area that I know of that aren't just guitarists who think that bass is an easy version of guitar and therefore easy to teach.

10 years ago I began the revolving door of basses. In the beginning was a 2000 Musicman Stingray 5 followed by about 120 other basses - Fenders,. Warwicks, Modulus, Aria, Yamaha, Ibanez, Rickenbacker, Warmoth, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 12 strings, fretless, fretted, acoustic, semi acoustic, and so on. Some were sold before they were gigged, some were sold before I got them and some made a gig or 2. Some of the more expensive ones were the most disapppointing. At one point I was taking 2 basses worth £4000+ to pub gigs. Last night I played the 2002 Stingray 5 I bought from Andy Dye at a Hogmanay gig and I felt like I was home again. My mate Mick the guitarist kept turning round all night. He told me at the end of the night it was because it sounded so good.

I bet Phil Taylor, Lemmy and Scott Weiland are having a right old knees up right now So hard to believe that 3 outstanding musicians have gone this year. I was a huge STP fan. Found them on "The Word" in about 1993. It's all gone tits for arse this year

On Christmas day I was treated to a Snark Tuner and Herco plectrums which are two very small but very necessary things. Tomorrow (technically today) I'll be treated to a Stingray 5 string and a Line6 G30 courtesy of Andydye and Guitarguitar

I've been in and out of thread a few times today not knowing what to say. I first saw Lemmy in that episode of the Young Ones "Bambi". Since then me and my brother have been to see Motorhead loads of times. We were both sad and disappointed when the last tour was postponed then cancelled but had tickets to next month's show in Glasgow and were looking forward to seeing the big man in action again. It takes a lot to get me going but I'm genuinely upset at this. It was inevitable and we both knew that this was likely to be the last tour but for it to happen so quickly was a complete shock. I shall be wearing my Motorhead wristband at the new year's eve gig and the Star Wars tattoo I had planned for early next year might become a Motorhead one.

I bypassed getting the holder for the G30 as I couldn't find the exact one for it. I have mine zip tied to my strap at the bottom part of the unit but velcroed around the top where battery compartment is. You really can't go wrong at £118.

Since the day I started playing I've only ever used guitar combos in the house. Means I can play at a reasonable volume without annoying the neighbours. I've been using the same 40w Meridian combo for a good 10 years now. Plenty of volume and doesn't annoy the neighbours but then I only ever play in the house to learn new stuff. It obviously doesn't sound the same as playing through a proper bass amp

So to summarise the view and opinions expressed on here: Jaco is universally acclaimed and was an credible bass player with incredible technique but leaves a lot of people "cold" when they listen to his work. This doesn't make sense to me - is this some people's way of saying that they don't like his work without offending the fans? Jaco influenced so many people but I've only seen two names mentioned. I honestly would love to see if any of the players I listen to were influenced by him If you don't like Jaco's playing or criticise it in any way then that's a stoning offence and you should give up playing and become a tegestologist I've tried to listen to JPs work in the past. I really wanted to like it as I had heard nothing but good words but what I heard wasn't pleasant. The live solos I've seen on youtube seem to be a series of random notes and noises. I honestly thought I was watching one of those "shreds" videos. This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. At the end of the day it's only opinion. You can't make someone like something that they don't and getting defensive, borderline aggressive & name calling isn't going to change someone's opinion

I went through a bout of bass and amp GAS that lasted about 10 years. In that time I bought and sold £36000 worth of basses and amps on Ebay alone. That doesnt include stuff that I bought or sold on here or Gumtree. Thing is that overall it didn't cost me a penny as I made money on some of my purchases and I sold one thing to buy another. I think I've had about 110 basses, 20 amps, 10 combos and maybe 40 odd cabs.

We're getting to the end of our first year together and were lucky enough to get a function gig at a hotel about half an hour away. It's not as much as we would normally go out for on hogmanay but it's still good wedding money and I would rather be out gigging than sitting in the house listening to the bloody Proclaimers and Paolo Nutini. last year was the first time in 20 years that I didn't have a hogmanay gig. I enjoyed spending the time with my wife but the telly is rank and we'll have the full weekend after NYE together

I love Adele's voice. It's really unique and really powerful but by christ are her songs depressing. Sing something cheerful FFS. You've got the talent, sing something happy for once Incidentally Adele is one of my top 4 female vocalists of all time along with Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson & Skin

If all else fails then a 12 string bass is the answer. Seriously though, I bought one to try it out with the rock band I was in at the time which had only one guitarist and ended up using it for the entire gig. The more bands you play in, the more you learn to adapt. Going from one guitar & keyboard to one guitar to 2 guitars and so on present their own challenges but it's up to all of you to provide the solution to make the band sound it's best. Incidentally the guitarist in the rock band is the best guitarist I've ever played with and I'm fortunate enough that he is the gutiarist in my wedding band now

I would've paid the £90 for tickets but the decent ones for the Hydro, that is the ones where you could actually see Jeff Lynne and not by looking at one of the screens, were £125 That is a silly price IMO. I saw Jerry Lee Lewis supported by Albert Lee and James Burton and they were £90 but I was 3 rows from the front Really disappointed as my brother and I had really wanted to go
