1. Back to the top - I now have this on Ebay but its available here until someone hits the BIN button
2. back to the top no love for the Epiphone?
3. I forgot to mention I'd be interested in a trade for either a metallic red or silverburst Epiphone Thunderbird
4. Wow - things are moving fast today - almost onto the third page c'mon, dare to be different from the usual Fender clones
5. Or if you want to be different: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=98146
6. I absolutely love this bass. It looks great, it sounds great and it plays great - but. I just bought myself an Epiphone Thunderbird and I forgot how much I love them. Its almost like it was made with me in mind as far as shape, sound, neck width etc goes so I am reluctantly offering my EB-3 up for sale here. Its done 1 gig which was Friday just past so its still in mint condition. Finished in black as opposed to the usual run of the mill cherry red ones as well. Currently fitted with a Hipshot Supertone bridge which does improve sustain and reduces neck dive but with a decent strap, its not really an issue. I use a Brooklyn Gear strap which is very similar to a comfort strap and I can take both hands off the bass and it balances out almost horizontally. The body and set neck are both mahogany with rosewood fretboard. Pickups comprise of a huge humbucker next to the neck and a smaller one near the bridge. controls are as a Rickenbacker 4003 with individual volumes and tones with 3-way pickup selector switch. To my ears this sounds like a Jazz bass on steroids. It can do deep and fat, honky and nasal or a balance of the 2 for a great sounding bass. Don't think you have to play in a rock band to use one of these - this is my second EB-3 (I fancied a change of colour) and I used this with my wedding band. With a pick it gives the closest Rick sound than any Rick I've ever played. A lot is mentioned on the forum about how good the new classic vide and vintage modified Squiers are and having owned a few of them myself I would have to agree that they are very good but I would have to be honest and say that if this particular bass is representative of what Epiphone are making then they are easily surpassing the quality of those Squiers. This is a beauty with an amazing finish, no sharp edges etc. Put a Gibson logo on this and you'd believe that it was one its so high quality - in fact given the poor quality of the Gibsons being put out at the minute this is probably better made and finished than the Gibson version I plan on taking the bridge off to put it on my Thunderbird but could be persuaded to leave it on for an additional £65. Alternatively, if you are interested in the bass and happen to have a black Supertone bridge then I could do a swap as all the thunderbird's hardware is black. Excuse the poor quality of the pics. I've literally just taken them and I'm rapidly losing the light so used the high ISO setting on my camera so I've included a couple of stock pictures as well. This bass is for sale for £160 which is £40 less than the online retailers are doing it for which is a bargain considering its practically brand new, new strings fitted and a good setup done which you don't get with a new one. No case or bag for this one but I can ship it in its original Epiphone box inside a bigger box for around £10. I could supply a Fender gig bag with it for an extra £20
7. didn't he do those crystals that are like fake diamonds?
8. Agreed - I see slap as a throwaway part of my playing. It never features in anything I play but if there;s a section of a song where we get the audience to sing or right at the end of an extended ending I may use it. I'd love to play a Level 42 song to be able to use it to its full advantage but the opportunity has never come up in the last 23 years.
9. That's a good price for a great amp since they're over the £500 mark new
10. I'm using a furry 1528 cab that's in mint condition that I got in a trade with Thornybank - absolutely love it. I have tried a lot of his stuff and the older stuff definitely sounds better - The MK2 ( I think) combo was amazing and the GP12 SMX 4x12" cab was very underwhelming. I briefly used a MkV AH150 into an 8ohm cab so it would've been putting out around 90w if I had the amp up loud but I simply didn;t need it - I love those trace watts, possibly even louder than valve watts
11. only 9 basses in 4 years - there's been times when I've bought and sold that many in a week. I've owned about 70 basses - 60ish of them in the last 4 or 5 years. I see something that I like even thought there's nothing wrong with the one I have or I get said bass that i like only to find it very disappointing (namely Rick 4003, Modulus Flea, Warwick NT5 Thumb) so it gets sold. I very occasionally buy a bass purely to sell at a profit. I've owned 4, 5, 6, 8, 12 string, fretless, fretted, acoustic, semi acoustic, neck through, bolt on, set neck and so on. I'm not sure if its my style or if I try to get the same sound from every bass I own but I sound like me on any bass so I may as well go for something cool and that's why I have my Epi EB-3. Looks good, does the job and I sound like me. Plus it does the closest Rick 4003 I've heard this side of the Yes Album despite having owned 4 of the buggers. I'm finally happy after years of searching since that fateful gig in the Dobbie Hall in Larbert where I couldn't hear myself so sold everything which was at the time a black Stingray 5 string, Gallien Krueger 800RB and Trace 1153. What do I have now? Check my sig - Gallien Krueger and Trace Elliot
12. That's bloody cheap - I sold my blue rhino one with cover a couple of years ago for nearly £500
13. Just joined - what were the chances of the only other Scottish member living in the same town as me?
14. Join the musician's union and you get it with membership as long as you're earning less than £16000 per year from music it only comes to £13 per month plus all the other benefits you get as well.
15. you mean one of each colour like this: What's madder than a 6 string fretless Yamaha 'ironing board neck' bass? one with different coloured strings I don't remember if this is where I got them but this guy has singles http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/mikes-chop-shop/
16. http://www.flightcasewarehouse.co.uk/music...sp?id=3140-4661 They can send you it and you can cut it out or you can draw round your bass onto something like a piece of wallpaper backing paper or anything big enough, send it to them and they'll cut it out for you I've never bought a guitar case from them but my small pedal board and a couple of cabinet flight cases I've had were and there stuff is top notch
17.
I got a really good Rockbag a few years ago off Fleabay for about £15. Well padded with loads of pockets etc. You can unzip the front bag and use it separately as a mini rucksack if you want to. I don't know if they're still available but that is a great bag for a great price.
That is the Rockbag Crosswalker. I've been using one of those for years. Well padded - its had about 50 different basses in it from cheapies to a 30th Anniversary Stingray. I always carry the rucksack separately as its a bit of a handful when connected to the gig bag
18. Having a browse as I am won't to do and came across this http://www.musik-schmidt.de/gb-Ibanez-SR7ViiSC-BK.html appears to have guitar string spacing http://forum.ibanez.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=75064 and on closer inspection is tuned B E A D G C E
19. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Japan-51-Reis...=item3caf7b3aa8 I imported mine from Japan for less than 300 clams. True the exchange rate isn't very good but they've possibly put the prices up in line with the MIMs
20. It seems to have a bit of a Jaydee look about it http://www.jaydeeguitars.com/calibas-head.php
21.
i have been looking at the orange terror bass
you won't be short of power with one of those
22. I've had several Ricks and the closest live sound I've been able to get is with my Epiphone EB-3 played with a pick.
23. And now someone i can talk about positively. JD was the person that made me want to play the bass when I was 11. All other songs I'd heard up until that time had been done by bands but with Queen, It was the first time I'd listened to the individual musicians. I totally agree that you can't have Queen without Freddy, just like you can't have Queen without JD, Roger or Brian. I remember when they did the Tribute concert that almost every single key had to be changed cos no one could sing the original unless they got a female vocalist in. JD started off with a Rick - It may have been a 1999 before moving onto the familiar Ps with the occasional Stingray, Buzzard, Single Coil P Bass and Telecaster Guitar during the Hot Space Tour. When they were recording A Night At the Opera, either Brian or JD thought that '39 would sound good with a double bass so John went out and bought/hired one and learned to play it just for that part. Some fantastic playing on album tracks such as Dragon Attack and Millionnaires Waltz amongst others. I was a huge Queen fan and can still remember all their middle names and of course, Freddy's real name. Ii was a complete Queen anorak. I first heard Queen at Live Aid and totally got into them when I saw the Live At Wembley 1986 gig. Queen were a phenomenal band and Paul Rodgers is a phenomenal singer but they do not go together at all. Brian got on my goat when he remixed all the Queen albums and turned his guitar up on every track, sometimes over Freddy's vocals.
24.
Most pertinent observation of the thread (pace Scalpy's keenly observed piece. And a few others). Crikey is rather a fine word and sadly under-used. I'd welcome the reappearance of such alternative exclamations as: Jings, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc Man alive, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc Lordy Lordy, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc Jakers, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc God's blood, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc Great Caesar's Ghost, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc Damn your eyes, Sir, I'm surprised I haven't received ...etc
You have a glaring ommission from your list my good man - the lovable cockney phrase sometimes used by myself for no apparent reason of either "Cor Blimey Guv'nor" which can be substituted with "Cor Lumme Guv'nor". I'm off out for a spot of late lunch, a matinee showing at the local cinematorium and possibly a yard of ale. this will be followed by some kind of 'fast' food involving the lower end of the quality meat spectrum, an indiscriminent sauce and some fancy footwork to compensate for the world spinning off its axis as is the way after several alcoholic librations
