Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Delberthot replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Ebay last night seemed to be chock-full of chancers trying to flog ropey JapCrap at eye-watering prices - some of whom really ought to know better! J.
i have no idea what you are talking about  -
The Stingray 5 is my favourite 5 string and if I were to go back to 5 string again I would either pick up an older one (before they changed the pickup) or go for a new Sterling 5. The neck is perfect on it. its not particularly slim but is exactly as it should be IMO I agree that the B string is amazing on these.
-
I think you should really try one first. Its always the case that those who have them will tell you to just go and buy one but I personally love the 5 strings and hate the 4 strings. I never got on with the stingray sound, the 5 being effectively a Sterling until recently. If I was to get one again it would need to be a Sterling. Don;t suppose there's anyone relatively close to you so you could borrow one for a while or even anyone who rents them?

Its funny but I've never wanted to be a famous musician. Sure I would like the cash, the endorsements, the screaming fans etc but I enjoy doing what I do at the level I do it. I imagine it would be really boring after a while, I mean how long would you spend writing, recording, touring etc out of the average year? After you've gone around the world on a yacht and done all the rich superstar things what's left? Go on a month long bender or die in a Las Vegas hotel room after snorting cocaine with hookers? I enjoy going out once or twice a week, being appreciated as a band/musician, getting paid, then going home to relax.
i don't understand why the neck pocket is completely painted.
I found that bizarre as well, you would've thought that 40 odd years of the neck and body being pressed together, the act of removing the neck would take some of the paint with it as well

The Jazz is absolutely stunning but it doesn't look like it's ever been played Was it because the original owner wanted to preserve it in its original condition or does it play like a Woollies special that's been left in a damp shed for 40 years?
It is an Antoria 2367B - these were identical to the equivalent Ibanez basses, as they were from the same Fujigen Gakki (not Matsumoku) model range, even down to the catalogue numbers. The finish is original, this type of spray pattern appears on many sunburst finish instruments, regardless of era & country of manufacture. Body construction on this is mahogany sandwich, possibly butcher block, with birch front & back veneers. This construction accounts for the black oversprays on the contours, to conceal the lamination.
Always get those two mixed up - amended now So I was right, it is mahogany! I didn't think it was but what you've said about the laminate top and back makes sense cos the figuring in the wood doesn't tie in with mahogany so that makes perfect sense. After assembling the bass yesterday I fired on one of my favourite fretless songs - Boy in the Bubble by Paul Simon and it does a fantastic job of nailing that sound. -
Fender 1951 Precision ... erm ... Jazz
Delberthot replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
"it was improved in 2010" well, no it wasn't - you buy a '51 reissue cos its a single coil P bass, Jazz basses are ten a penny so if you wanted a Jazz you'd buy a Jazz surely? When standard '51s are going between £300-400, adding £200+ for work that maybe cost £100 to have done is a tad steep. Especially when I've seen US Jazz basses going for £450+ -

Here are another couple of pics You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to photograph this bass properly. In the flesh it looks absolutely amazing but its really hard to capture the sunburst finish. I forgot to add, I have currently fitted the original jazz pickup cover and covers on the precision pickup that hide the poles but can do any combination of originals on both, as they are in the pictures or black with exposed poles on both -

I'm not sure about the finish - as you say there's no burst where the scratchplate would be but they probably didn't bother as they thought no one would see that part of the body anyway. There's no burst over the forearm contour probably to make it easier to paint or something. Its definitely not a refinish. The neck at the body end is about 3mm narrower than a Fender one so if you fit a scratchplate, there will be a small gap either side of it. -

I've only just bought this but I've decided that I think that's me finished with fretless basses for the forseeable future. This is an Antoria bass and is Fujigen Gakki made, which are the magic words apparently, in 1977. Bassassasin is your man if you want more information on these. This is my first foray into Japcrap which is a bit of a misnomer in this case as it is a very solid bass. I've always wanted a maple fretless and this one's a cracker. Its had what looks like a Di Marzio J pickup added. It has the 4 wires, hex pole pieces and the pat applied for sticker on the underside. The J pickup has a higher output than the P so you may want to adjust the pickup height or change the P for another Di Marzio or something with a similar output. I am puzzled what the body wood is, probably alder or similar but in the control cavity it looks like mahogany which I doubt, probably just years of use or some mystic force. The J pickup route has been done very well like it was done by someone who knows what they were doing, so clearly not me then I've spent a few days replacing the electronics and giving it a good clean to remove 33 years of funky deposits - don't get me wrong, the bass is still funky and looks like a well played bass. I've also fitted brand new strings, I just need to adjust the intonation and action and it'll be ready to go. Some of the laquer on the maple board has worn through and the bass is covered in what I'd call natural dings from years of use. The porn thread can be viewed here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry952758 It comes with a hard case made in England by the Freestyle Case Company if that means anything to you and all the catches, hinges and handle work I didn't pay a lot for this in the grand sense of the word so I'm not going to rip anyone off on here, Ebay yes but here no so it could be all yours for £160 which will include shipping to mainland UK. I have plenty of cardboard to fire around the the case so I'm not going to be charging you to pack it. I may be interested in trades but would prefer a straight sale

I've decided that its not for me so I'm offering this for sale now.

Finished for now - There's a huge difference in output between what I assume to be the original P pickup and the much hotter J pickup which I'm not happy about but being Japcrap I'm not about to spend a great deal rectifying it. I have thought about buying a cheap set of pickups or even disconnecting the P pickup and fitting a Bartolini 2 band active EQ which I have going spare at the minute. I may also get myself a nice cheap cream scratchplate ( I don't do tort ) in the future, we'll see.

Some pictures taken during cleaning Don't get your hopes up too much for a completely transformed bass - I just wanted to get rid of the funk As you can see, some helpful chappie has added lines to the side and top edge with their finest magic marker or similar. it would originally only appear to have had side dots.
-
As a Chris Squire fan myself I lusted after the Rickenbacker sound for many years until I bought one and discovered that no matter what I did, I could not make it do 'that' sound. The closest I got was with an Epiphone EB-3. Try as many as you can - you have had 5 so far so have much to try before you decide on what you like. You may find that the next bass you try is the one for you or, like me, you may find that you need to try an excessive amount (70odds and counting) to find what it is you want. Or maybe like me, you discover that regardless of what bass you own, you end up sounding like yourself.
Nice, that. I was watching that one - just curious, no intention of pulling the trigger. Anyway K77 prefix on the serial makes it November 1977 - these were from Fujigen, identical to the equivalent Ibanez/Greco etc models. Antorias have the same model numbers as Ibanez too, I think they're originally factory designations, and this will be a 2367B. It would once have had a nice tort plate - and no J pup! Speaking of which, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that turned out to be a DiMarzio. Jon.
I think it may very well be a DiMarzio - it has the hex pole pieces and the patent applied for sticker on the underside. I've changed the cover as it was a tad funky and the poles were a bit rusty to reveal that it is a humbucker with 4 wires

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Delberthot replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I've fired a couple over in the gear porn section. I'm making a few alterations but nothing significant other than new pots and pickup covers. Once I've given it a good clean I'll take some better ones -
Sold for £124. So much for my estimate of £180. With a hard case too! Jon may over-rule me , but I'd prefer this Antoria to the fretless Maya being sold for £199 at the moment. But I think someone got a real bargain with the Antoria.
Yes I did -
I spotted this going on Ebay and managed to win it. Its just arrived so I've taken some pictures before I take it apart to clean it. It is very funky so I'll be getting the metal parts into some cheap cola to clean them up then put it back together. I have no idea how old it is and haven't had a chance to have a rake around to see if I can find a close approximation.
