1. Alternatively, second hand £700 will get you all of the below: Epiphone Thunderbird Squier VM Jazz Fretless Yamaha BB605 Crafter acoustic 18 sets of Hartke Strings One for every occasion.
2. I once received a 1979 Rickenbacker 4000 in an old gig bag with a broken zip held together by brown tape. Amazingly it was still in one piece. For me it depends if I have cardboard available - what I do have is bubblewrap. Because I do so much buying and selling I buy 100m rolls of it. Normally to pack the bass inside the box but sometimes I put loads round the hardcase
3. don't worry about it. What you effectively have now is 3 units in one box - a preamp, a poweramp and a speaker cabinet. that's why its called a combo. 9 times out of 10 when you hear someone talking about a head or an amp what they are referring to is a preamp and a poweramp in one box This is mine Amps are given an output in watts with a minimum impedence. What that means is to get the full output from the amp you will need to have the equivelant impedence in your speaker cabinet but you don;t always need the full output. An amp with a minimum impedence of 4ohms means that you can either connect 1 4ohm speaker or 2 8 ohm speakers and that will allow the amp to put out its full power. The impedence is written on a plate on the back of the cab. These are the cabs that I use albeit mine are the older version with the carpet covering and steel grill If I am playing a low volume gig, eg where we are using a full PA then I only need to use 1 cab. The amp will be running at 8ohms so will only be able to put out 300 watts. If I am playing a rock gig then I will take both to get the full output from the amp
4. no they're only on the OC-3. The OC-2 is analogue and comes complete with warbles. The OC-3 is polyphonic so you can play chords and it does octave up and down as far as I remember as well as distortion
5. For that kind of money you could probably pick up a couple of trace cabs if you are prepared to wait. I've seen 4x10"s go for £100 and compact 15"s for £90. You could do worse than a series 6 Trace Head or even something like the Peavey that sold recently. Trace Amp The best thing to do is look for something good and reliable but not in fashion as you'll get it cheaper You may struggle to get something loud enough for that kind of money but second hand Trace, Peavey or Ashdown is going to probably be your best bet
6. I think the preamp in is so you can use an external preamp and bypass the one in the amp. You could keep the Hartke and use it as a practice amp or sell it and buy something more powerful. If you had a figure in mind that you have to spend then I'm sure we could all give you our own ideas for what to buy. You also have a choice of a louder combo or a head and cab(s)
7. not just any octaver - it has to be a Boss OC-2 I would never sell mine
8. stringbusters do individual rotos
9. I should also mention that I open to offers as well. if I don't get any bites then I'll just keep them but it would be nice to sell both as it'll mean I can get my tuner back on the board and have room for whatever overdrive i decide to go for.
10. its all over the place at the minute
11. its definitely worth doing your homework when it comes to buying second hand - you can get a bargain on Ebay only to find that its only a few pounds to buy it new McNach - did you intend your avatar to look like a classic John Deacon image?
12. I'll be leaving my band at the end of the year - they just dont know it yet We get together to gig and that's it - no rehearsal, no promotion, no discussing new tunes etc We're no longer a band and more like 4 sessions musicians who turn up to play at various events - if we weren't so bloody talented it would've all came crashing down ages ago Shame - been together for 14 years
13. That combo doesn't have a speaker output. Its only 60 watts, you're going to need more than that for a pub gig. Read as much as you can on here and ask as many questions as you can. My personal experience - first gig was with a Peavey TNT150, not loud enough, distorted badly. Traded for a Trace 200w 2x10" combo. Still not loud enough so added a 4x10". Plenty of volume now. Smallest setup was a Genz Shuttle 6 and a Schroeder 2x12" - loud enough for any pub gig, very pokey. Lowest powered loud setup was a Trace amp putting out about 90 watts into a Trace 4x12". Very loud from low watts. Its a combination of amp output with efficiency of your speakers
14. My Ashdowns don't have any feet but I have a pile of Trace rubber feet that I am going to fit before the gig next Friday
15.
You don't really mean that. Tell me you don't really mean that. With all those other great basses in your possession, when would you actually play that thing?
I love 12vers and the Chandler is the daddy - nothing else can come close plus with only 2 weeks until I see Cheap trick what will Tom be using? His Waterstone, Hamer or the Chandler?
16.
What a bass looks like is the most important thing about a bass, unless you're only going to use it in the studio. Would you get on stage where a room full of people are going to be staring at you and not think about maybe wearing something that looks good? It's the same with your bass - you have to wear it while a room full of people are staring at you, it had better look good! FWIW I like Jazz basses but I wish they did a 24-fret model that looked "classic". Currently I'm gigging my Thumb, which I think is pretty understated and natural looking, and I like having the million miles of frets. I wouldn't want to play a bass with garish wood though, like a figured top or whatever. I dress too scruffy to wear a bass like that. It would be like putting on a gold chain.
The Thumb, despite its unusual shape does look very elegant and understated considering the amazing sound it produces I really want this: Its the most amazing bass I've seen in a long time.
17. used to be every day for several hours a day - lucky if its 20 minutes a week now I use the Sylvester Stallone workout method - concentrated, focussed playing over a short space of time. I think my playing has come on leaps and bounds over the past year with little practice. I'm not bragging. My favourite drummer of all time Buddy Rich never practiced ever.
18.
Plus i dont know anyone personally off this site or any other bass players
So far I've only met 5 members very briefly since joining the site so the chance to have a natter with other members over a ruby and a golden jar is very appealing. I'm also interested in the bass side of it as well. I enjoy alcohol but I'm not an alcoholic - they go to meetings.
19. Fantastic basses - I've had 2 now. I have never been a fan of Jazz basses, never liked their sound but fretless they totally work for me. If I ever went back to using a fretless, this is what I'd have again
20. Sting's '57 single coil P bass Rickenbacker 4003S Yamaha BB5000a Gibson Thunderbird 1976 Bicentennial Chandler Royale 12 string Dean Demonator Reeves Custom 225 That's what I'd have if I had a large pile of money but I'm really happy with what I have. I think the Rick would be first though
21. Yes, they stopped maing them a few years ago. Can't remember how much they were new but the 4 strings go for about £6-700 which is a bit odd as you can usually pick up a second hand neckthrough one for about £800ish
22. I'm on the lookout for a good overdrive, preferrably the VT bass but may consider others
23. couldn't agree more - as soon as you feel yourself tensing up that's when the cramp sets in and you find you can't play Same goes for using a plectrum, keep your fingers relaxed as possible when holding it. If you tense up you'll find it hard to playand if you switch to fingers for the next song your fingers will still be really tired
24. I like things that are a bit different - Jazz basses are 10 a penny If it doesn't look good then forget about it. I'd rather play the biggest pile of sh*te in Europe than something that looked bad Yes, I'm shallow when it comes to basses
25. cos you're selling to me?
