It used to be a badge of honour having an almost unliftable bass to go with the humongous rig! A lot here has been said before on the balance of a bass - I know I changed because my previous bass would bite into my shoulder really badly. Next bass, although I'd looked for something lighter, weighs exactly the same, just doesn't feel that way on the strap.

30 Amazing Unsung Bassist... with audio clips
Mykesbass replied to tredders's topic in General Discussion
Rant Alert........ Only gone through the first few as my blood was starting to boil, and I've decided (early New Year resolution) to stop being a grumpy old man, BUT, most of these are NOT unsung - prime examples Bernard Edwards and Duck Dunn!!!!!!!! OK, I'll accept Tommy Cogbill being unsung, but what a lack of thought by the compilers. Oh, and no Tony Goggle Rant over. -
Playing Old Basslines Down the Octave on 5 String
Mykesbass replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
As we're playing it all in concert pitch I'm playing it on open strings down an octave from the original bassline. I don't think anyone except for me has noticed that I'm playing it differently.
Yes, still slightly off topic (but hey, it was my thread ) there is a lot of that sort of thing like the band stopping because you're not playing because you're not supposed to be, but they don't know! -
Dexter Gordon's version of Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry, played so lyrically you don't even need Sinatra's vocal version!

Playing Old Basslines Down the Octave on 5 String
Mykesbass replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
OK, I'll give the specific song that prompted theis - Bob Dylan's Tom Thumb Blues - the bass starts of on G on the E string in the intro but then goes up the octave in the body of the song so that the low V can be played - thus playing G in the same octave as the guitarist, although the D is obviously lower. From this I have the sneaking feeling, if a 5th string was available, Harvey Brooks have used it. This also sort of agrees with Jennifer's post regarding the arrangement. Thanks for the replies. Got an old bass line that is in G and uses the root - V pattern. To do this it is played up the octave as obviously, when the track was recorded there wasn't the option of a low D. What would others do - play it authentically, going up into the guitar registar, or play it down the octave? Thanks, Mike

That's a really good quality video - should've been a Transit not a Citroen though

Thanks HappyJack. That's such a tidy headstock I had to recount the number of strings a couple of times! p.s. How's the leg?

Seen a couple of good mentions of Status Hotwire Half Rounds and sounds like they could be what I'm looking for when my neck returns with a new fretless board. Just a bit concerned from the Status website about scale lengths - the long scale are for 35" or 34" with through body stringing but the medium scale are for 32". Will the long scale be ok for 34" through bridge stringing?

Been quietly following this, so glad it finally arrived and WOW! That is stunning - Ebony has just become my new Spalted Maple!

have you ever up sticks, and moved for the music?
Mykesbass replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Only one way to find out - do it! I seem to recall from some of your earlier posts you are a bit of a fish out of water where you are at the moment. Bristol seems to have a lot going for it. Whatever the outcome I wish you well -
Love the harmonies. Nice work.

Love a bit of melancholia - this one is great in that it finally reveals the song for what it truly was, not the wonderful but happy, bright sounding original by the Mamas & Papas:

Original house music..EDIT..or all house music..
Mykesbass replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Didn't really like it then, still not keen now, however, I was working for a record telesales company at the time - funnily enough one of my calls was a shop in Evesham - and house music really opened up black music to all sorts of areas. Before it there was a real split - only the big cities with a sizable black poulation would buy black music, but this stuff seemed to break down a lot of boundaries. Surprised you missed the daddy of them all: -
Surely it's a good thing for them to be out there making an effort and doing their stuff in what is a very tough business. And, sad as it may be, we all know how important image is these days. Plus, who amongst us doesn't need money to survive, never mind indulge our musical fantasies? TBH, I'm a bit surprised about the negativity shown in the above comments, or is BC turning into a forum for bedroom slappers who think the world owes them a living just because they know one end of a bass from the other?
Valid points Flyfisher, but they have come on a bit strong and there is the faintest whiff of BS about the ad - they're another bunch of guys trying to make it happen, good luck to them, but all the nonsense about having good solicitors and their slightly arrogant demands, I think they have received just about the right amount of healthy BC scepticism.

Don't know about stereo, but these guys make very good quality instruments: http://www.imuso.co.uk/Bass-Guitars/7361-/...r-Jetglow-Black
As a guide to image the previous (?) bass player was the one on the left :-) Mind you this puts a different slant on things.. :-) http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/skinny...ristmascampaign
Mmmm, if they're having to do this I doubt they'll be with Clintons for too long

OK, don't know if "faults" was a typo but a couple of those were pretty dodgy Bub However, as a sort of guilty pleasure I'll 'fess up to:

Will catch it on listen again - I'm off out

I would have thought for regularly gigging pub bands it is a bit of give and take - the band builds up a bit of its own following but the pubs need to build a reputation for themselves as a music venue, not necessarily promoting individual bands but making sure the locals know there will be a good band there EVERY week.
Yes, Sade, fantastic I compare "Sade" the band to the "Blockheads" Before you laugh at that comment, what I mean is that both front man and woman, and both bands, although different in styles, stand out still today as completely unique and so listenable
I can see where you are coming from - absolute top drawer musos behind an enigmatic front person. Love both of them.

I thought she was great at the time and still love her music. Yes, she did have a limited vocal range/style but I don't personally feel that detracts from the fact that teh band made some great music. Would love to find a copy of the Smooth Operator 12" breakdown mix.
