1.
although my Dad seems to be hellbent on telling everyone we got reviewed in the local paper instead of focusing on the bigger things
2. Was thinking about you today - bought Q for the first time in years, and lo and behold, a Case Hardin album review! Good luck with the album and the tour!
3. Jools never used to do the selection, it used to be Mark Cooper. Don't know if it still is - watch the credits and get the names of the producer, exec producer and any researchers you can and plug them. An artist I once worked with manged to get Jools to get him on as a favour as they were big buddies. We at the record company then got a real ear bashing from Cooper saying it wasn't up to Jools who went on the show!! And no, the record companies didn't pay back then although there are sometimes deals where the record companies will pay the session musician fees, but don't think this is the case with Jools.
4. In no particular order: BB King Thrill Has Gone - makes the track move perfectly Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick (Surprised this hasn't already cropped up - usually does) Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon & Garfunkle with Joe Osborn Son of a Preacher - Dusty Springfield with Tommy Cogbill
5.
Check the wholly appropriate bass solo at 4:34. That's the way to do it.
Forgot that I actually really liked this band - never hear them on the radio these days. Only got their albums on vinyl - looks like an Amazon order on the way.
6.
Time to fall pray to GAS contract ends soon though.
Better get on with it then Welcome back.
7. Sorry to hear this. Are "High Value Items" that have to be listed seperately on insurance policies really that low a value these days? Better check my policy.
8. We're going to rehearse a couple tomorrow night ready for a gig on December 23rd (singer's off on holiday for a few weeks hence the early start).
9. Looks like I'me going to have to invest in some foam (I don't think my poor knackered hands will be up to palm muting). I really want to add this tone to my meagre repertoire. Thanks for all the posts - Clarky, you tipped the balance there with the Notts County Linesman
10. That's going to be something to be really proud of once it is all done. I'm full of admiration for you in taking this on as I'm sure many other BC'ers will be!
11. I'm goingf to sound like a REALLY old man here and blame the massive jump in people plugging in to mp3 players/ipods. Safe levels are 85db for long term exposure. Go up 6db and you will start damaging hearing after 2 hours. Crank it to full (ipod about 103db) and the damage will start much sooner. Completely agree with Discreet about cinema - I avoid going as not only do I find it too loud overall but I find the balance can be ridiclous with sfx being ridiculously out of proportion to the rest of the film (and don't get me started on surround sound)
12.
If I can jump in here, the effect is percussive because of the muting. Try it yourself!

Absolutely, you get the immediate attack (click) with little or no sustain. Listening to it again, I'm thinking Ricky. Here's a similar sounding bass.
Well, you live and learn! Thanks guys, will experiment with that (once the cortisone jab has taken effect )
13.
I'm going to say Fender bass, flatwounds and a pick. No doubt someone will be along in a minute to tell you the exact bass, strings and pick, amp, studio, producer, weather at the time of the recording session and what everyone had for breakfast!
That's what I like about this place - satisfies the inner anorak Had a quick look around, surprisingly very little on Mr Siffre, although on a later album he was backed by Chas & Dave who I have a lot of respect for. Thanks for the replies so far - SteveK, would the effect be so percussive with muting?
14. I've always liked this clean, percussive sound, quite a classic old bass sound to my ears - is it nylon strings and a pick? Cheers, Mike
15. And there's me moaning as I have to miss a rehearsal due to a cortisone injection next week! Here's to a speedy recovery bassace!
16. Wow, great stuff Wes - if I was still working at a record company I'd be very interested - shame I'm a gardener these days
17. You're a star, tempted to kick off the auction, but reluctant to as the bridge wasn't found in a house clearance/uncles loft. Oh well, could always ask the seller a question..... .......hope your questions are public
18.
within the same model and range though. It's not going to be the species of the wood making the difference as they should all be the same. But rather to me anyway re enforces that predicting what a lump of wood will do is going to be near impossible as there are that many differences between two alike instruments never mind between two different species. And if the range between the alike ones can be wide then there is going to be some cross over with other species. If that makes sense.
Absolutely makes sense. The whole point of tonewood surely is that you select the bits that will work and send the rest off to the cabinet makers?!
19. The Squier CV models are great and hold their prices well secondhand - great for selling on, not so great for buying. Two brands that often get overlooked and can be ridiculously cheap secondhand are Aria (not their real cheapos - STB I think, avoid these) or Cort. With the help of your pro friend you should be able to pick up a pretty good model from either of these manufactrurers for a very good price (just won't be able to sell them on)!
20. To me, the acoustic properties of an electric bass have a very marked effect on the feel of the instrument. So what if it doesn't have any bearing on what the recorded end tone is, the feel is very important to me. As an example, when I had a music shop for a couple of years I had two prime examples, three Yamaha RBX's came in the same delivery, all were OK but one was just that little bit more alive unplugged. Made a real difference. The other example was with guitars, so opens a whole new can of worms, but again, one US Strat plus two Highway One Strats, again, one of the Highway Ones was miles in front of the other two. So, yes, I do think the wood has an important bearing on the bass, even if we can't always hear it when recorded.
21.
There's actually a difference between slides and bottlenecks. Bottlenecks are hollow - they were originally make from bottles, while slides are solid like this one:
Now I had been thinking of making the same post, but according to the Dunlop catalogue, these are now called Tone Bars. Did somewhere back in the past the term slide guitar used to be reserved for steel guitar?
22. Interesting video - will work on some of those ideas this evening. Now, where do I find a drummer like that?!
23. Don't know about Mr Fishman but Savoy is the only cabbage I'll touch - stir-fried with garlic and bacon! (sorry, someone had to)
24.
Great mix and bass sound IMO, Im not a great fan of picked bass or valve drive but sometimes its the right tool for the job
Absolutely hit the nail on the head - not a sound I would ever go for but really works well on occasion - including on this example. Radio 1 - what's that then?
25.
Mike instead of Mic gets on my wick. Who the f*** is Mike?
Testing 1,2, Testing - anyone out there? MIKE
