Decided I must do Movember this year - my guitarist mate had prostate cancer last year, fortunately caught early and hopefully dealt with. I've set up a team space on the Movember site - Bass Playing 'Taches and would love it f some of you fine folks would care to join me. I've got to loose the beard first which is going to be the first hurdle so would love some company! Anyone who would like to get involved please sign up here: http://uk.movember.com/mospace/6607589 and let's have a laugh whilst promoting a serious cause! Cheers, Mike

Warning.... Kappalite 3015 NOT designed for Bass!
Mykesbass replied to skidder652003's topic in Amps and Cabs
It is worth noting that in their application guidelines for the Kappalite 3015, Eminence state that this driver is “Recommended for vented professional audio enclosures for full-range or as mids.”. The driver is not recommended for low frequency use, or for bass guitar applications, and using it as such is using the driver for a purpose other than intended. Whilst the Kappalite 3015 is capable of reproducing frequencies as low as 40Hz, Bottom E on a bass guitar in standard tuning is a touch over 41Hz (41.323), already dangerously close to the stated lower limit for the driver, and even at moderate power levels capable of pushing the driver to significant levels of excursion. A semitone down from this – very easily achieved when playing live – is more than adequate to take the speaker outside of this. Drop D tuning will take things down to under 37Hz, open C on a 5-string is a little under 31Hz. Put simply, this is intended as – and described and sold as – a mid-range/full-range driver, and is unsuitable for use in the application you have chosen.
I just checked the Eminence website and the recommended speaker is the Basslite. I'm now thoroughly confused as this has a stated frequency range from 52Hz, so if they are saying that the reason your speaker failed was because you went too low how are their bass speakers meant to cope? -
Is it for sale
Wow, that's a bit out of the blue! No sorry, firm believer in never say never but pretty sure this will never be for sale!

Unlike Dave's service this feedback is very late - couple of instrument cables from him next day delivery and great cables. Thanks!

Great Designers. e.g. Leo Fender - he didn't even play them!
Mykesbass replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
Jim Marshall - like many with Fender, I'm not a huge fan of his products but, like Leo, he certainly helped the development of rock music. -
If you were going to buy, I suggest 'Revelator'. Probably their best regarded studio album. Certainly my favourite.

Really nice and just ordered Revelator off the back of this but still to me, the repertoire is falling short of the talent, whereas, chris_b (who seems to know my musical tastes better than I do) has hit the nail on the head with this great Junior Wells cover.
TT at one of Clapton's Crossroads festivals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9I6lQNK6Ok
Thanks for the suggestions - I look forward to living with Revelator for a while and see if it grows on me.

And does he have the right bass for metal?

Known abot these for a long time just never got around to listening. Really love the sound, esp live taking a browse around YouTube. Just one thing, and hence the request from any fans on BC, I felt the material was just a little lacklustre and didn't live up to the excellent performances. Any suggestions gratefully received. Cheers, Mike
I'm sorry but that that is simply amazing. Probably the best piece of music and playing I have heard this year. Top stuff.
Wow, thanks Linus - hope you don't mind me passing that comment on to Rob!
Hey Myke, thanks for posting. This is a new version to me. I just love Reggie’s tone, he sounds like a million dollars on everything he does....

Plenty of love for Reggie from me, I first heard him years ago on a lovely Al Jarreau album (All Fly Home)
Fabulous stuff - as I said, that's one stellar CV!
-
Up there with Tommy Cogbill and Joe Osborn for me, just heard this track and loved the bass sound so checked out who it was - Reggie McBride, another of those with a stellar CV, but with the exception of Chris_b doesn't seem to get a lot of kudos on here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JruTW2bSt0E
Tell him to sort his hair out
It's the beard that needs some radical surgery first!! The tone of that Lowden is rather special!

I've always admired this style of playing but often felt it was clever but not particularly melodic. This young guy is a friend of mine and I think this piece is gorgeous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tde9b_ByZJU&feature=share
Good point about the Union practices of the time. The thing that gets me about that period is the standard of musicianship was so good, the pros either side of the Atlantic were playing such long hours all the time they monstered most charts put in front of them. It seems daft but even if you watch the old Muppet shows, different guest every week and heavy names too, and the band would be laying it out. The closest we have to that now I suppose would be the Jools Holland Orchestra, and as fantastic as that band is at their own arrangements, personally I think they lack a little something when it comes to playing material from another repertoire. Two examples that spring to mind are the Booker T and Bonnie Raitt performances from recent series. Maybe it's because the 60s guys were the sound of the popular music of the time and working on chart material day in day out. We all know how few musicians are involved in some material now, and there isn't that pool of talent that is shared across different playing disciplines. However, if I could play like Mr Swift I'm sure I wouldn't give two hoots about the opinion of some forum expert! Anyway, the clip is still great even if my preference is for the original. That's just because Kosmic Blues must be one of my desert island albums and Janis is one of the few vocalists that have me hanging on every word. Regarding the avatar, can't believe no-one thought of it before.
Nice post. I think part of the problem for the session players is there just isn't the work anymore - the balance of power has shifted and the artists can all generally demand their own bands. A couple of exceptions, my pal was MD for the BAFTAs a couple of years ago when it was the big tribute to the Bond Films. That was some real old school session work and sounded fabulous. Jools' band I think are too much a band - they have that organic vibe, so when it comes to accompanying others they still put their own mark on it. Both styles have their own merit but I do think we'll be seeing less and less of the former.
I have a decent turntable (Linn Sondek LP12) and also a CD player and iPod and AWB sound just as good to me on all of them.
Fair do's - I just really find that there is an intimacy to the sound of vinyl - it draws you in to really listen. I know this is probably a downside to some but I love it!
-
Only on vinyl?
Just seems to suit them to my ears - funny some things just do and AWB are one of them.
-
Top band - sound great on vinyl. Interesting that Alan and Hamish shared bass duties - even on the live album they are both credited.
Great, thanks for that. If that isn't Brad Campbell, somebody did a great job of copping his style!
Thing was there were all the union restrictions back then so, like Bloodaxe mentioning Big Jim Sullivan, I think there's a strong chance it would have been a British session player. Love the avatar - one of my favourite films

What Amplifier brands do you have a hard time finding?
Mykesbass replied to TomRichards's topic in Amps and Cabs
Carvin
http://www.bassgear.co.uk/product-category/bass-amps-and-cabs/carvin-amps/ these guys are fabulous to deal with and I have the 500 head from them - lovely! I'd love the chance to see and hear some Traynor gear over here - highly respected valve gear at a fraction of the price of most other stuff available in the UK.
