1. Had the best gig so far with current band - Crowborough Constitutional Club - loads of people had been in and drinking all afternoon watching the rugby. Plenty of banter but once we got going they loved us. Great to get so much response from a non-dancing audience - probably 70% male and no room to dance although plenty of room to set up. If anyone gets offered a gig there, as long as you're doing older stuff and can cope with a bit of drunken banter it's a great gig to do!
2. If you can't switch the pub date you should do it. A mate of mine was looking at becoming Jamie Cullum's agent just as he was breaking big time. He had three gigs in the book, one paying £80 which he insisted on honouring!
3. This post's at the wrong gig!!
4. Any of our Devon Basschatters gigging on Wednesday night or any Plymouth jam sessions? Got a boring night in a Travelodge so could do with a distraction!
5. Here's the link to the online version: http://www.music3sixtymagazine.com/index.php/2012/02/inner-voice/
6. Not from music but I start a new job on Monday having had to give up my gardening business due to ill health and it was transferable skills from being a school Governor and helping to run a rugby club that got me the job. Having said that, this employer was the first one to look at the skills rather than the direct previous experience.
7.
We seem to have a regular procession of BC'ers dropping by Jon's workshop - could one of them not oblige?
If anyone is up there this week I would be thrilled if they could/would.
8.
we obviously need to see pictures as a matter of urgency...
Think it will be once I get my hands on it - Jon's so flat out it doesn't sound like he has the time to take photo's!!
9. So, despite a complete lack of pictures, this should be ready for collection next week!!! Nothing like a huge element of surprise, bit I'm still very excited
10.
I think it's quite sad that Norman finds it necessary to sell this. I know for some a bass is just a bass, but there must be a lot of fond memories there. I wonder if it was used to record Hit Me...?
Ad says he used the bass from the 80's - Hit Me was '78 so PTB is probably right.
11.
I bought one new I was using as an expression pedal (it was meant for that usage as well as volume) and the toe down position would 'decalibrate' mid-use... So say you'd rock it forward and it would go to max value, than back and forward again, it would only go to 90-something percent. Then back and forth again, it would top on a different value. Rubbish. Also, it would cause no change to the effect for a bit in the beginning of the sweep, and then suddenly move very fast to say a third - it didn't sense movement for about the initial third of the sweep. And the range of movement was so short it was very hard to control it with any precision. None such problems with the Ernie Ball.
Fair enough - shame, they used to be a reliable budget option. Looks like, as with everything, as the price gets driven further and further down and the raw materials get more expensive something's got to give
12.
Yeah, Ernie Ball user here too. The new Dunlop seems to be good as well, but it's MASSIVE... Bespeco are a bit sh*t but I guess if you want to spend as little as possible they'd probably be good enough...
Unless they've gone way down hill in the last 5/6 years I'd have to disagree, they used to be very good budget kit.
13. Apparently it all goes downhill from 25 - I just tried noiseaddicts and could hear 14khz but not 15khz. I'm 47. http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/can-you-hear-this-hearing-test/
14. The Show Must Go On!! I'd have thought it was far less likely getting sacked if you show that level of commitment no matter what you make of the gig. Remember, roll all the tone off so you are just making a dull thud in the background - then you can blame the room's acoustics
15. Bespeco is a cheap and cheerful brand and pretty good value for money.
16. If you are using Wordpress PM Jean-Luc Pickguard - he's a Mod over on there and very knowledgeable.
17. That's a huge shame Clarky, really liked what the band was doing and it should have been a fun gig. Apart from politics it did seem that the band had major geographical issues as well from your previous posts! Hope you find something good soon. Mike
18.
That would probably be at the time my wife's Uncle Kenny (Bradley) was the drummer.
Some time between 75 and 79 I would have thought. I started that school (Walworth) in 76 and they had already left but were still Stan's and the teacher was still singing with them.
19. My old drummer pal from school Gary Wallis went on to work with Nik Kershaw and then ended up touring as percussionist with Pink Floyd. He's now Tom Jones' MD - saw him on the BAFTAs the other night. Nine Below Zero were there a couple of years before me - my brother's teacher had to make the decision whether to stick with them as lead singer (Stan's Blues Band at the time) or stay as a teacher. He stayed. Also, any boxing fans may know of Mickey Cantwell and Billy Knight.
20. For me, being a right old commercial tart, it's the bits that when you hear the song on the radio you are waiting for: Commodores "Easy" guitar solo cheesey yes, but not as cheesey as: Gladys Knight & The Pips the "Whoo Whoo's" in "Midnight Train to Georgia", and just to restore credibility a tiny bit, the trombone solo in "I've Got You Under My Skin" plus all those little motifs within arrangements (brass stabs in Son of a Preacher is the most immediate example). I'll go and tune into Smooth FM now
