If you want to be successful, do you have to dress up?
Mykesbass replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
You guys DO know who Francis Dunnery was, don't you? He's certainly not famous for dressing down. Lol.
OK, I'll bite (see what I did there) - apart from a penchant for a Celtic football jersey what dressing up/down is he famous for? -
No, but 30 days from the end of the month for a holiday home park we do always niggles. Is it a big name chain?
I would like to see him make a Ric.
I had the exact same thought

Great post, thank-you

I find it fascinating that people want to/need to belong, and have even toyed with the idea of studying this concept. What kicked it off for me was religion - there were two occurrences close to each other that sparked this off for me, a thread on here for Christian Bass Players and seeing an organised bikers ride locally where there was a gazebo put up for the Christian Bikers' Society. What really struck me in both of these was the need to be identified by the religion as well as the other interest. Personally I have never knowingly joined any tribe - never been a Mod or Rocker, always liked a wide range of music, never passionately supported a sports team, don't even feel particularly English/British, so would certainly not identify myself as a bass player, but it is very much a part of what I do.

Couple of things, the 90's/early 00's Korean models had bolt on necks detracting from the overall sound of a 335. They were however, nicer quality than the Chinese ones that followed. The bigger issue is that of getting a jazzier sound - common misconception with 335's as they are for all intents and purposes a solid guitar, with a block of solid wood going through the body and to which the pickups will be anchored. For a much jazzier sound you really need one of the fatter bodied hollow bodies, possibly with just a neck pickup. Also make sure you use flatwounds and fairly heavy (12) gauge strings.

Or put directly in to General Discussion?

Not the one I thought it was going to be then but as soon as you can post pics I may be able to help - was an Aria dealer 10 years ago and had one of their basses from that period.

Is it active, with soapbar pickups and have a five way selector? Could be the 404/5 More recent ones were Chinese built and with the through neck.

Nice post and interesting article - thanks.
sorry off topic. but anyone remember Jeff Young's Big Beat show on the now sh*te Radio 1. Radio 1 was a great station back then. maybe im getting old.. no its sh*t. classics like this. i remember when soul to soul first broke out on this very show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JeXSESPM4Y
B5, to bring this back on topic a little, it's not just Radio 1 - going back further Capital was brilliant, with early evening shows by real music lovers like Malcolm Cecil's old boss Alexis Korner, Nicky Horn, Adrian Love and many more. Discovered so much music across so many genres back then.

Well done all the BC regular composers - was torn between two this month, one a great composition that could easily crop up in a film/advert and the other some fabulous bass playing. As it is a composition competition the former got the vote, but great work Al on the tone and playing! Keep up the good work supporting this Skol - let's hope the competition gets some more support - amazing how few votes compared to the recent poll on a well known cabinet builder
Thanks all. Just out of interest is there much difference between the makes Chord and Cort ? I had a quick look at the Vintage Modified Jazz Bass online - a lovely looking instrument! I love that retro feel! Does the VM bass have a slimmer neck than the Ibanez range? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks again.
I only know the Chord brand through the guitars my local shop stocks and really wouldn't put them up against a Cort - Cort far superior (IMO). Back to the Squiers, I had a VMJ fretless, and bought it before trying it. I went through all the CV and VMJ range at the time to get a feel for them before ordering the fretless and found the CV's were much nicer than the VMJs (although no fretless). One of the best things about them is they re-sell quite quickly and hold their price reasonably well. I'd say Cort would be a better bass but are not as easy to sell on.

Hi AB and welcome to the forum. Cort are excellent basses, and are actually the maker of many of the bigger brand names. Squier Affinity is the real entry level - better of looking for a CV model secondhand (check the classifieds on here). EB0 is short scale so may feel a little bit odd for someone of 6'4" Also don't forget the Yamaha RBX170 - their entry level bass, always top quality. Good luck in your search, Mike

The first "modern" sounding recording by today's standards?
Mykesbass replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
Agree with the comments on 80's recordings sounding very dated and also pick up on 4 Strings comments on classical recordings. It almost seems as though the desire to push technology on hampered the end result. I love the first two Dire Straits album and like all the rest of their work but never listen to Brothers in Arms any more purely because of the "modern" production. Going back even further, an album which would have probably been recorded in the same way as the classical ones 4 Strings likes is Frank Sinatra's Songs for Swinging Lovers - to me it sounds as fresh as anything else in my (oddly varied) collection. -
I had a Rickenbacker 4003s8 - only sold it to help fund my custom Alembic. Fantastic bass, amazing sound, but good luck finding one; even if you do it'll cost you. One thing I did find was lighter strings worked far better.
Out of idle curiosity, which way around did they have the octave strings, as the 12 string guitar is famous for being the opposite way around from the conventional acoustic 12 string?

Played a Dean Rhapsody 12 once - although I can't personally see the point of such a thing it was dead easy to play and very nicely built and balanced. Might be worth adding to your list.

What tunes have you been learning today?
A bit more challenging than Wizard, I'm guessing
Sorry, haven't got a copy of that!! Hope you gave the rest of the band hell though?! -
Last night I've been learning the Al Jarreau version of Chick Corea's Spain. Jazzyvee
Ooh, tasty! Love that track, in fact, off to play it on vinyl NOW!! -
Sorry, bumping an old thread, but thought I should bring attention to the GS bass that's popped up on Manchester Bass Lounge. Looks to be a sexy bit of kit: http://manchesterbas...nge.com/?p=4975
Amazing - I'd say that was a bargain for something the quality of a Gordon Smith!

Lied to by Music shop and poor repair work.
Mykesbass replied to SlipperySquid's topic in General Discussion
Are they an authorised repairer for the amp? If they did a dodgy fret dress I'd be very worried about them repairing a £1,000 amp and voiding the guarantee. -
You would probably need to play around with the pick up pole pieces to balance the volume (I broke a D string at a gig and even a fresh new roundwound against the older worn in ones was way too strong). Only real issue I can see is where do you want the rich mellow tone to stop and the brightness to take over (although you could change this by fret positions). Only one way to find out.....
Thanks for that. They really look like a bargain for the price. I'm wondering if they will be long enough as the 'speaking length' is 32 1/2 inches. I've measured the G string on two of my old Short Scales Basses (1960s VOX Clubman & Burns Sonic both with inline tuners) and from the bridge to the tuning peg it's 37 inches. Maybe i'll have to give them a call unless anyone has Status Short Scale Strings and knows the actual length.
Email or call them - not only bargains but excellent customer service as well.
