1. Which would it be? I'm looking to get an octave pedal, I don't use a lot of effects live but when messing around in guitar rig I'm finding a tendency to gravitate towards using an octave pedal. The stuff I play is kind of jazzy funk and an octave pedal would really suit it. Question is, which one? The Boss OC2 and OC3 get a lot of love but likewise so does the Aguilar Ocatmizer and the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe. The list goes on and on. Which pedal would you pick over all the others out there and why? The help is as always much appreciated!
2. I used to use a couple of Eden cabs and an Eden WT300 years ago, they were built like tanks and sounded incredible. I remember when Eden stuff had a serious prestige about it and were pretty desirable. They're a sort of "do everything well" brand that focus on quality. Not really been a fan of the newer stuff but the older stuff is really really nice. Fat, warm and gutsy but the cabs were pretty heavy if I remember correctly. Congrats on the purchase, I'm sure it will serve you very well indeed.
3. Honestly I'm probably a 1. I'd say I'm a fairly decent player but have lacked the structure to really focus on improving. I have a tendency to have good intentions with my practice routine but often find I get distracted and go "off topic" instead of working on a certain technique or tune. What I'm doing to try and improve this is a couple of things. First I started a band with musicians that frighten me, I needed the proverbial kick up the backside to get my chops in shape. Second I've started writing out a list of specific things I want to work on and tried to come up with a more structured practice schedule. It seems to be helping, rather than sitting for 3 hours playing things I can play in my sleep I'm focussing for half an hour on something I can't play yet.
4. For anyone interested I finally figured out the riff Scott Devine was playing during his masterclass. It's a tune called Hiii by Evan Marien on his Here We Are EP. I can finally sleep soundly lol!
5.
Cleverson? Yeah, a real beast.
That's the guy! Regarding the tunes I was talking to Geoff Chalmers last night who explained that one of the riffs was something Scott had heard Evan Marien play while he was recording a SBL video and the other one he can't remember who wrote it but had come across it on YouTube. I'm really looking forward to watching the footage from the masterclass.
6. It's the other one I'm trying to figure out lol! Ah well, might message him on Facebook and see if he can tell me! Can you remember the name of that Brazillian drummer? That guy was a monster!
7. Very much enjoyed watching Igor Saavedra showing off his ridiculous Prat custom 9 string and his signature PJB rig. Really nice guy as well, had a really indepth conversation about his technique. I have a video of him playing which I will upload when I get chance.
8. Was anyone in the Scott Devine masterclass on the Saturday? What were the 3 tunes they played? I know one of them was a Meters tune but the other two I have no idea but the riffs have been stuck in my head ever since!
9. Love that but can't justify it, looks stunning GLWTS
10.
or this? http://www.ebay.co.u...%3D132110888972
These are pretty good actually, it's a BB405 - bassically the simplified passive version of the BB605. They're decent basses and for the money will take a lot of punishment. They sound best with new strings on them, they can sound a bit gutless if the strings go dead. Stick this through a decent preamp to boost the low B and you'll be cooking.
11. Totally agree with the Squier stuff, my Vintage Modified Jazz is incredible. I genuinely makes me question what I'm paying for when I compare it to a Fender. I know some people might crucify me for saying that but each to their own I guess. Yamaha are also great, their entry level stuff is really high quality or at least it was the last time I picked one up in a shop. I've had my BB605 for years, not a high end bass at all but sounds great and is very similar in sound and feel to the Nathan East signature which is about £3k if memory serves.
12. This has all been a very interesting read. I really feel for people when stuff like this happens because you put so much work into writing material only to have someone steal it and sell it out of the back of a proverbial van Del Boy style. Good on you for calmly approaching the promoter first, going nuclear should never be the first port of call but definitely having a plan in the form of legal services to make sure they know you're serious as a back up. Really hope you get this all straightened out. This is really helpful for all those players that have been done over by "promoters". I put this sort of stuff in the same category of "pay to play" gigs and doing gigs for "the exposure". Sure, pay me in "exposure", I'm sure Tesco's take payments in "exposure" when I need to eat! Rooting for you mate!
13. Actually I'd highly recommend Facebook for finding musicians. The BandMix and JoinMyBand type sites tend to be pretty rubbish in my opinion. There's loads of Facebook groups for musicains. I was searching for musicians using exclusively Facebook and within about 4 months have managed to put a 6 piece band together. Didn't have anywhere near that kind of result using any of the band classified sites.
14. When I used to do the session thing years ago I did studio sessions with several different basses and have had the producer or engineer say "that was good but could you play it on a p-bass/jazz bass/<insert bass here>?" I've also had situations where someone has asked me to specifically bring a certain bass to a session. I get that and I'm ok with that as that's the specific sound they're after and at the end of the day they're paying me. But that's about SOUND on a record, not about look. In terms of if I'm in a band and not in a session context; if someone tells me to play a different bass because of XYZ reason I would probably politely ask them how they would feel if I told them to play a different instrument and suggest they stick to what they know. To be totally honest I'm not sure I'd want to be in a band where they're overly concerned about the "look" of an instrument. I have a guitarist mate who plays fast picking country and western stuff, his axe of choice - a Schecter Hellraiser C1 simply because of how good it sounds when he plays country and western music on it and how it feels in his hand. Designed for metal head shredders but he doesn't care.
15. PMT in Manchester have always been good when I've been in, very accommodating and happy to let you noodle away on something even when you're just having a browse. The only shame about my recent visit was the lack of interesting bass stock, just dominated by Fenders and Ibanez's. I love a good Fender but not much of a fan of Ibanez. Also seemed like there was nothing amp wise accept for Ampeg, Ashdown and TC. They used to have a huge variety but I guess times have changed and retailers only stock what is popular to maximise on sales.
16. I recently discovered a band callled Huntertones on Spotify and cannot stop playing their live album. Their version of Camptown Races is ridiculous! Spoken to loads of my muso mates and no one has heard of them. Well worth checking out.
17. @Ped - Running a forum is a monumental pain in behind and while I work for a software company I fully understand the obstables that software limitations present. Some people may not be aware that the software behind the scenes is not something you have full control over and modifications to add functionality are not easily made. No complaints from me regarding Basschat and sincerely do not envy you, I can only assume you do it for the love of doing it! Or you're some sort of masochist, each to their own I guess . Also as far as buying things with confidence on the forum I've not had any woes from any users on here both buying and selling. @mateusz - Did you per chance pay with a credit card? Not sure if you mentioned in your previous posts. If you did most credit card companies will assist you if you have been a victim of fraud, it's built into your terms and conditions. It's never happened to me personally but I know a couple of people who have managed to get a full refund from the credit card company once the transaction was identified as fraudulent. Anyway, really hope you get this sorted mate.
18. This thread has been very useful to me as this is a cab I've recently been looking at as a replacement for my 2 no name 1x12's. I am also going to be running a Markbass LM3 and my logic was the same as the OP - one 4ohm cab to minimise footprint and get the full 500 watts out of the head. Great thread guys, thanks.
19. In terms of basses my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz. Absolutely incredible bass, if it weren't for the logo on the headstock you probably wouldn't question a price tag of double or even triple the cost. Decent setup and a set of DR Fat Beams and it sounds fantastic. I played a 1972 Fender Jazz a few years ago and my Squier is as close as you can get to that sound and feel but for a fraction of the cost. For £300 you really can't go wrong with this one. In terms of amps/cabs I'd say the Warwick Neo Pro 411nd I had years ago was amazing. I got a good deal on it from Electromusic in Doncaster when the Behringer cab I bought from them blew up on it's first gig. They recommended the Warwick and knocked the price down for me to make up for the faulty Behringer (great customer service). Great range, very powerful and very light for a 4x10.
20.
I've got 2 5 String ACG's Adam and live South Manchester. Welcome to try them if you want. Both 34", a Recurve and a Skelf.
Might just take you up on that if I get a free moment.
21. So after having the pleasure of meeting ead and trying out 3 of his stunning ACG's this weekend at the NW Bass Bash I'm feeling ever more drawn to pulling the trigger on a custom. I'm going to be chatting to Alan at ACG at the London Bass Guitar Show next month and having a look at some more of his creations. I'm starting to develop a much clearer idea now of what I want and I think ACG will deliver it. Now to start selling internal organs to fund it, how much can you get for a kidney on Ebay these days.......
22. Another vote for the Mono Betty. I've got the grey short one, best strap I've ever used hands down. Not that cheap but then not that expensive when you look at some other offerings. https://www.gak.co.uk/en/mono-m80-betty-short-strap-40-46-ash/102636
23.
People in good, happy, settled bands should be grateful. Once it is over it can be very hard finding or starting another. I know this from current and past experience! Sometime the planets just align and everything falls into place. Not very often though... There are a lot of unreliable time-wasters and dreamers out there (particularly on Join my Band, but that's another story!).
This +1 I'm in a similar position, really trying to get something together but I often feel very much like I am usually the one chasing which is super frustrating. My big problem at the moment is finding a decent drummer who isn't already in 12 different bands and barely has time to sleep let alone joining another project. In my experience a lot of the bands looking for bass players round Manchester tend to be punk/metal bands which I'm just not that into any more, not sure what the London scene is like nowadays. Don't get me wrong I enjoy a bit of drop tuned, aggressive head banging every now and then but I don't want to be in that kind of band. I'd much prefer to play some solid funk grooves, alas it doesn't seem there are many available musicians who share the same desire. The advice seems a bit old hat but there's always the option to get down to local jam nights, it does feel pretty clunky and the conversation is usually pretty awkward until you start becoming a regular. For what you're after I'm not sure what sort of jams are local to you but that would be where I'd start. I'd imagine there's probably some more rock orientated open mic nights. The key I've found is to try and stay optimistic and not give up, I've been actively looking for a band for about 6 months now and I've had a couple of false starts but I just dust myself off and keep searching. I figure there must be other musicians out there that share the same desire to play in a band, sure I might have to compromise a bit but bands tend to be pretty democratic. Good luck with the search man.
24.
For your consumption, here's a couple of samples featuring the low B on my 5 >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/if-you-want-me-to-stay and https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/rfb-series-active-sample and also, here's some sound samples of my 6 string shorty, chordy noodlings and some low B action too >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/acg-salace-sc-e-type-samples Hope that helps dude! Eude
Just listened to these, some really lovely work there man. I love your approach to playing the chordal stuff on the 6 and the tone really sings. And you're right, that B sounds great!
25. I noticed from your sig that you have a fair collection of them! How does the B sound on the 5/6 string? That was the only thing I didn't get to test out with ead's basses as he's got 4 strings exclusively. In fairness I'd imagine it's pretty punchy and dominant going on the perfomance of the Recurve. What sort of string spacing do you have on the 5? I'm interested because the Recurve I'm playing has an asymetric profile which is really cool and kind of forces you to use good technique but at the same time feels very natural to the way your hand wants to sit on the neck. I really love the fact that you don't have to fight the bass, it just gets out of your way and lets you play it.
