1. Hey everyone So I recorded an improvisation last night on ead's ACG Harlot (really love the sound of this bass). I need some advice on a recording issue, I'm not super knowledgable about production so bare with. Ignore the fact that SoundCloud compresses the life out of everything you upload but if you listen to the track there's some weird interferance that seems to have been picked up on the track. The best way I can describe it is some sort of digital hiss. Not it is or how to get rid of it, any advice would be massively appreciated! You can listen to the track here: https://soundcloud.com/adam-mark-wood/reflection Cheers!
2. Thanks for the comments guys! So this started out as a little noodle I was playing around with last night while my wife was out. When I say "finished" it's more a "finished concept". I was experimenting with effects in Reaper trying to see if I could get loads of different sounds out of one relatively cheap bass. In total I probably spent about 3 hours from composition to recording last night. It is pretty repetitive and I think if my band like the idea we'll properly arrange it into something. We're still very much in the writing process at the moment but there's lots of cool stuff to come. I would have liked to add a bridge to it and would probably rerecord the solo (my solos tend to be a bit noodly). I would have done a keys part but I'm a woeful keys player! The melody line is probably more suited to a synth which is where the distortion came in. Glad you enjoyed it!
3. Hey everyone Just finished a new tune this evening and thought I'd share. Entitled "What did you do today" all parts recorded with my Squier VM Jazz and the drum part is Addictive Drums. https://soundcloud.com/adam-mark-wood/what-did-you-do-today Enjoy Adam
4.
Yes, indeed I started with the one sharp then went for the five. Shame it wasn't C Major we were talking about as relatively speaking it would have been... wait for it... A Minor error...
Gold!
5.
He he! Thank you, it's not often people laugh at my jokes!! Looking back though, I should have said B Major. But then, that's probably why people don't laugh at my jokes; watch me kill the punchline ha ha!!
Was it E.B White that said "Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog: you learn a lot but the frog dies." You were right with G Major though (or E minor)..... unless of course you were eluding to the fact that there were 5 sharps in total in the original post in which case I say well played sir, excellent wit!
6. Great playing on your Soundcloud stuff mate, good luck with the sale
7.
Like the chances of anything coming from Mars! #WarOfTheWorldsThread #YesIJustHashTaggedInBasschat #CompletelyPointless #RandomlyRememberingVBScriptCoding #LooksLikeWeAreInGMajor
Found this a lot funnier than I probably should have!
8. I use a PC that I built myself (pretty easy nowadays as it's like lego, as long as you have all the right components there's only one place they will fit). In total I think I paid less than £500 for my PC and then paid about £150 each for my monitors. I think really rather than looking at a specific laptop like a "Sony ACB" or "Dell XYZ" I would focus on the spec. For music production don't skimpt on your CPU, make sure you get something nice and beefy like an Intel i7. I use an AMD FX6300 (6 cores at 4Ghz) and it just shrugs off everything I throw at it. Next you'll want a decent amount of memory (but don't go mad - more memory doesn't mean more speed - this is a myth, ask anyone who works in IT). You probably want 8Gb of RAM and you probably want at least DDR3 1600Mhz (pretty modest by today's standards in all honesty). I use 8Gb of Kingston HyperX 1600 in my PC and again have never had any issues. Finally if performance is your thing then I'd recomend sticking with the SSD. If you're going down the PC route then get a second hard drive (a mechanical 1Tb normal hard drive will do) and use that for storage. Record your tracks to your SSD and once you've mixed them just move them to your storage drive so they don't take up too much space on your SSD. Also if you're using VST's I would suggest keeping your VST library on your SSD, don't panic about the space it takes up, even if you have thousands of samples it's not going to take up more than 30Gb. As for software you simply cannot go wrong with Cockos Reaper. I use it for everything I do, it can do everything Pro Tools can do and is a fraction of the cost (£60). You can download a totally free and totally uncrippled version of it which never expires if you want to have a go with it, the £60 price tag is more of a pledge of your support for the developers than anything. http://www.reaper.fm/ Hope that's helpful.
9. A thing I tend to do at work is tap out different beat divisions on the side of my mouse while I'm listening to a tune. It's a subtle way to work on your internal metronome. For me I get serious "red light syndrome" when recording (i.e. Your rehearsals are really tight but then your actual recorded take makes you panic and rush the beat). To combat this I try to get in as much subconscious rhythm practice as possible, tapping the side of my mouse, tapping my foot etc. I work in a fairly noisy office so there's not much danger of annoying people with it.
10. Hi everyone Here's a new recording of another of EAD's beautiful basses. This one is an ACG Harot 4 string with a John East pre and split coil pickups. Had a lot of fun playing this and knocked together this little tune. Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/adam-mark-wood/acg-harlot-4-string
11. Bought a Barefaced Retro two10 from Cal. Really decent and friendly guy. The cab was exactly as described and Cal was very accommodating in letting me having a noodle around with it before I bought it. I would definitely deal with him again. Top bloke, buy with confidence. Adam
12. Bump still available. Will consider sensible offers but no trades as I need the cash.
13.
It's a shame the function bands that want to specialise in a particular genre feel they have to do the same songs as your generic band. There are plenty of poeple out there that would book a proper funk band, even if the crowd don't know the songs that well they would probably be familiar with a few hooks and if the music is good and played well it will get people dancing. Saying "we are in the entertainment industry so we must play these songs" is like saying all restaurants should sell burgers and chips.
I agree with that to a point, I think it depends on the gig. If you're getting gigs through an agency for a wedding then rightly or wrongly there are often expectations as to the kind of material you'll play. Depends on the person booking you. I did a wedding gig years ago where the groom was a big Tower of Power fan so asked us if we knew any. We played "What is Hip" and he and his mates filled the dance floor and had a great time, it was an absolute riot and I drove home with an ear to ear grin. Unfortunately the following gig about 2 days later was to your typical drunken wedding crowd with the "Do you know anything by <insert current top 40 artist here>". Swings and roundabouts I guess! I do agree though, a good funk band by their very nature should be very entertaining and have no problem filling a dancefloor. Problem is not enough bands out there willing to take the risk.
14. When I was "pro" years back most of the work I did was with corporate function bands playing exactly this type of stuff. Very tight with very high level musicians and pretty decent very regular money but ultimately - Sex On Fire, Superstition, Move On Up etc. The dilema for me was the fact that for years leading up to this point I had wanted to be a "session player" but never really had much of a concept of what that actually was. I spent a long time honing my skills during my music degree and pushing myself to become a better and better player but I ultimately ended up playing covers and teaching music with the opportunity to play for recording artists and do "studio work" and "touring" being quite rare and certainly not often enough to make a living. The necessity of playing covers to the same wedding/corporate crowd in order to pay the bills is what ultimately took all the joy out of music for me. I eventually jacked it in and took up a day job so that I could afford to do the gigs I actually wanted to do. I love playing Jazz and Funk but unfortunately playing "Teen Town" or Herbie's "Man-Child" album in it's entirety won't pay your rent unless you're actually playing for Zawinul or Herbie!
15. I've been rejected from a band before I even got to the audition because I didn't respond to a text within the hour. Had a phone call with the bandleader and all sounded great and said I would confirm a date to meet up with him after work when I'd had chance to look at my diary. Got a text from him the following morning at about 8am asking to arrange a meet up that week. I was at work and in meetings all day so no chance to look at my calendar and respond. Looked at my phone as I was leaving the office around 5pm to see another text from about 2pm THE SAME DAY saying that "clearly I would be unable to show the band the level of commitment they need so they will look elsewhere for a bass player". All this when I had explained to him that I would be in meetings all day at work and would arrange when I'd had chance to look at my calendar... If this was for a worldclass touring artist I'd be a bit more understanding (still a bit peaved but time is money) but this was for a small time function band playing pub gigs and weddings. I'm certainly not going to sit and stare at my phone all day in case I get a text. Think I dodged a bullet with that one, not fond of dealing with divas!
16. I really like them and they've been my go-to backup strings for a while now. I tend to keep a spare set lying around because at £13 a set it's a worthwhile spare to have in your gig bag. They perform great but need a little playing in so they don't sound too brittle. They go dead quicker than the usual DR's I use but then you could buy 3 sets of Warwick Red labels for the cost of a sing set of DR's.
17.
Bass sounds really nice, but it's clearly in good hands because you our playing is excellent.. very musical and very funky! GLWTS
Thanks mate, glad you like it
18. Hey guys Shifting this on as it's taking up space and I need to raise cash to buy a pram! This is for a Carslbro PA head and a couple of 12" Cabinets. No stands and no speaker cables I'm afraid. Carlsbro Marlin 3000 PA head 6 channels, 300 watts 4 ohms Cabinets 12" 200 watt Eminence drivers with HF horn Bear in mind this is a pretty old head and cabs so it's in "gigged" condition. Works great for vocals, brass and guitars but obviously not going to handle bass and drums very well. £150 Collected from Manchester preferred, courier would probably work out fairly expensive. Would be willing to meet for a bit of petrol money, PM me. Cheers Adam
19. Hey everyone I'm selling my Yamaha BB605 as it's not getting used anymore. Need to raise cash to buy a pram for little one so not interested in trades at the moment. Condition Being perfectly honest it's pretty beaten up condition wise, the bass is about 15 years old and has been very heavily gigged in that time so it's covered in dings and scratches. Also it's missing a couple of tone knobs (the pots are still there and still work perfectly just the chrome caps that sit over them have fallen off and vanished). Likewise the active/passive switch is missing a nut (which also fell off on a gig once upon a time), still works perfectly but is loose instead of being bolted to the body. Lastly the bass took a fairly nasty whack after a punter knocked it off a stage years ago, this resulted in a crack in the headstock near the tuning peg for the G string, this was fixed by a joiner mate of my dad's and is really really strong and I've NEVER had a tuning issue with this bass. Condition is all purely aesthetic and does not effect the sound our playability at all. Features (from the Yamaha website) This BB Series 5-string model features a built-in NE1 Parametric EQ and the BBNE2 Nathan East style body silhouette. ・Nathan East Sculpted Body Design ・Solid Alder Body ・5-String Maple Neck ・Rosewood Fingerboard ・24 Frets ・Single Coil Pickups ・Nathan East NE-1 Parametric EQ ・Diecast Chrome Tuners/Hardware ・Black, Natural, Wine Red Finishes ・Limited Lifetime Warranty Additionally it's a 34" scale 5 strings and weighs about 4kg. Just restrung a couple of days ago with Elixir Nanoweb strings. Here is a demo tune I recorded with it a couple of days ago after restringing it. https://soundcloud.c...ood/yamaha-demo £200 ONO collected from Manchester (with a gig bag) or will post if buyer pays postage. Cheers Adam
20.
Check this video out - it perfectly shows how (if you listen with good speakers!) the Aguilar sounds so fat and all cohesive with the clean tone when blended, but a bit bland by itself; and the Octabvre sounds fat soloed but loses something when blended: I think I need an Octamizer.
Cheers dude I'll check that out later when I'm on decent headphones. I tried the Aguilar Octamizer at the London Bass Guitar Show, had to go back for a second demo when it was quieter so I could hear it properly. The guys at Aguilar were really friendly and helpful and were more interested in trying to get you the right sound than sell you a pedal (goes a long way in my book). Needless to say the Octamizer is a very very well made piece of kit, which you'd expect from Aguilar. It's not too fancy and more focuses on doing one thing very very well, it sounded wonderful. I've just been to Dawsons in Manchester this afternoon to A/B a couple of pedals. I have to say I'm really not a fan of the OC3, sorry to offend anyone! It just sounded a bit "meh" on the octave setting and the synth setting (or whatever it was) sounded like a broken overdrive pedal. The effect in itself was pretty cool but not that useable musically. The MXR M288 however... totally different league of pedal. Quite a bit dearer than the Boss but seriously good tone, I love the "Girth" knob and the thing tracks for days. Got a few more contenders to try out first but I think if nothing else blows me away we have a winner with the MXR.
21. +1 for Warwick Reds. I tend to use DR Fat Beams normally but when I'm in a fix and I just need a quick and cheap set I'll go for Warwick Reds every time. I think you can get them on Amazon Prime which is pretty cool. I try to keep a spare set in my gig bag for emergencies. For £12 or so you can't go wrong. Sure they won't last as long as a high end set but you'll get at least a few gigs out of them. Even when I'm done with them I still tend to recycle them to use on a different bass if I want a slightly more dead sound.
22. Thanks for all the feedback guys, I was looking at the Cog T-47 last night actually, there's a cool video of Scott Devine talking about it . I really like the idea of having the ability to switch between 2 different octave effects and the price is pretty similar to the MXR M288.
