1.
I think that your gear altogether is worth around £50. I can pick it up this evening if you like
Haha theres always one lol
2.
I think that says it all! Alex
Yeah this is true. To be honest though in the space of time since I posted this about half an hour ago I've realised that I need to forget the head 4x10 idea cos I want portablity. Lugging a 4x10 and head around just isn't fun! Plus I'm hoping to go down to London next year to continue studying so a "rig" just won't be practical! Just been looking at the Markbass 102 combo and had a massive GAS attack!
3.
I think its going to be very hit and miss with the warwick stuff, Some people love it, some people cant stand it. however the actual items in question arnt what you normally see on sale warwick wise, so you should get a fair price, im a bit reluctant to give you figures but probably around 350 for the cab and 500 for the head? Im no expert, Just spend too much time lurking ebay!
Haha I know that feeling far too well! My bank really hates me! Thats the sort of figures I was kinda thinking but I just wondered if that would be percieved as a "fair" price.
4. Ok so I'm fancying a bit of a change gear wise. I really looooooooove Markbass stuff, so much so I'm considering selling on my Warwick rig to get a little mark II and a 4x10. I'm wondering what my rig's worth for like trade/sale value. The line up is a Warwick ProTube IV (2 channels, 400watt solid state with a 2 stage tube preamp, sounds the dogs danglies!) and a Wawrick neo 4x10. The head is in really good nick as its been in a gator rack case since I got it, the cab has a couple of small scuffs and tears on the carpet and a few chips on the warwick badge (from loading/unloading etc). Ok so bare in mind the cab is worth about £460ish new and when the head was on the market (it was discontinued in about 1999 I think) it had an rrp of about £950ish what do we reckon would be a fair price to be looking at flogging the old war horse for? Like I said I'm not 100% on this yet because I really love my warwick, I just really fancy a Markbass rig cos everything I've seen/heard from markbass has been nothing short of gorgeous! Cheers me dears! Adam
5. I borrowed one of these to teach with a few months back. I thought it was really really nice and I couldn't believe my mate had only paid like £100 for it! Through neck construction and a really really comfortable neck. Nicely set up as well but I dunno if my mae had tweaked it. Well worth a go though. In region of £100 what have you got to lose?! If you don't like it you could always fanny about with it as a project to upgrade fpr that sort of money.
6.
Just a quick load of questions from someone who knows nowt. Why would you have one made? Surely there is a bass out there for everyone. What if you have it made and it does not behave/play as you requested? Do you still have to go through with it, or do you fight them like you do with builders. What is the re-sale value on a custom build? If you did get a custom build and after a while you realised your old Warwick Streamer was better, would you bite the bullet and admit it? I wouldn't.
I understand what you're saying here mate cos the same questions are running round my head too. I think the thing thats swaying me towards a custom build is the whole thing of you get an insrument that looks the way you want it to and sounds the way you want it to. If it didn't play/sound the way I'd requested it to I would probably be a little miffed and ask the builder for a refund. To further what Sudgen said I don't think any bass I'd be inclined to order from a custom shop would be so "out there" that the builder wouldn't be able to sell it on if I didn't like it. At this stage its looking like it could end up being a Sandberg with a MM/J pickup config and switchable passive/active electronics because to be quite honest I haven't seen or played one that I didn't really really like.
7.
Have a chat to Peter Brown at Synergy Distribution - you may be pleasantly surprised at how accommodating Sandberg can be to requests for tweaks. They're superb value basses as well.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I might just do that CK. I know they're very friendly guys over at Sandberg so I'll see what I can drum up.
8.
It sounds like some kind of 5 string jazz with a decent pre-amp and switchable coil soapbars might suit you!
Good thinking there mate, hadn't really thought of switchable pickups. I was also looking at Sandberg's rather tastey range of j basses, I quite like the idea of the MM/J config on a 5 string. Plus everytime I've played a Sandberg I've really liked it.
9. Production instruments? Mainly the fact that I like the characteristics of several different types of bass but I just haven't managed to come across the bass that gives me everything I want in one package. For example I love the jazz bass tone but sometimes I want a little bit more than just a standard jazz tone, something fatter and beefier. Other times I want something generic that a soundman doesn't cry over. A custom jazz would probably suit me to be honest, something that can give you a nice jazz tone but can also kick out quite a nice modern tone as well.
10. Ok so I've started earning a nice wage out of playing for various bands and I feel like I am a busy enough player to justify having some "nice gear". Admitedly I am really really really fickle and particular about my sound so naturaly my conclusion is that I need some sort of custom instrument in the not so distant future. So instead of my trawling round the country looking for the best custom shops I thought I'd ask you fine boys and girls what you dig and what you don't bass builder wise. So let me know your opinions on Shuker, GB, Overwater etc etc etc or recomend a manufacturer I might not have heard of. To be honest I don't like basses that look like a piece of furniture and I don't want one with such a characteristic tone as Fodera for example. I'm looking for something that will be able to just fit into any situation I throw at it cos I play a lot of different types of music from corporate party band and pop stuff to all out rock and mad experimental stuff. So what do you reckon guys? I'm looking for a versitile 5 string and my budget will probably be around the £1100ish mark, bearing in mind the most I've ever spent on a bass was £800. It won't be for a few months yet though as I need to pull the money together. Thanks guys Ad
11. Really interesting question that. I've been playing for 10 years now, I was gigging at the age of 15 and I now teach bass at a private academy but I can tell you without even thinking about it that I'm no where near as good as I want to be. Thing is for me music and not just the bass is my whole life, I honestly wouldn't know where I'd be without it. I know that somehow I have to at least try to make a career out of it cos its such a massive part of my life. I'm a firm believer in the fact that you never stop learning at any age. Even Victor Wooten who most people would ragard as one of the most accomplished bass players thats ever lived is trying out new stuff. Lets face it, the bass has only been around for about 60 years so its still a relatively new instrument. Why stop learning something thats in its infancy? Ad
12. Vanessa Carlton - Nico Carmine Abondolo Pink - I have no idea, tried to find out but failed! Prince - Prince Michael Jackson - Louis Johnson/Nathan East Sikth - James Leach Jamiroquia - Stuart Zender Counting Crows - Millard Powers
13. I play 5 strings in a function band and I also teach bass so nowadays I pretty much stick to BEADG. I was in a technical instrumental metal band a while ago and for that I tuned one 5 string to Bb standard and the other AEADG. For my original rock band I keep my 5's to BEADG and my 4's to DADG.
14. Ok I'm preparing to be slated here but I'm just giving my opinion with reference to personal experience. I had a behri alu 4x10, and on paper it was fantastic with its 1000 watts rms etc. In reality it was the heaviest thing in the world and when I used a warwick 400 watt hybrid amp through it ("protube IV", solid state with a 2 tube valve channel) I blew a cone to pieces on its first gig second song in (and no I wasn't driving the arse off it either, spec wise the cab should have been able to handle it but alas no). My opinion is that yes behri stuff is cheap but I'd recommend to anyone who wants their gear to last and be reliable then don't skimp on it. At the end of the day its an investment so save your money until you can afford to buy something you know will be worthwhile however I know its not always that easy. I did consider another cheap cab but i figured I should push more money into it and so I'm now using Warwick Neo cabs and I've never had a problem with them in about 3 or so years. At the end of the day I'm a big believer in "you get what you pay for" so please don't hate me. Adam
15. Hey guys! Thought I should really pull my finger out and register on here. "Nevertheless" was my old bands name but they split up about 4 years ago lol! Thought I'd be best off with a more relevant sceen name! Easy boys and girls Ad xxx
