1. I'm all subscribed! Looking forward to some vids!
2. Added another tune today, The levels are a bit better on this one. I've been listenin to a lot of Oli Rockberger recently so this one's nice and mellow to contrast the Marcus Miller rip off! Btw all the backing tracks are done by me in Reason 4. Cheers Ad
3. These are such good basses, I played a similar one in PMT in Manchester a couple of weeks ago and I just couldn't get over the definition on the thing. I've played basses in excess of £2000 which couldn't touch these for tone and versitillaty. If you're looking for a bass that will do pretty much anything then I'd say you won't go too far wrong with this. A pleasure to play and the sound was huuuuge. Oh and a big plus, theres no volume differential on the Lo B! It sounds just as good as the rest of the strings! Amazing bass! Good luck with the sale matey! I doubt you'll be waiting too long for a sale on this. Ad
4. The thing is the bass is just going straight into the line 6 which is acting like a DI box and even more so as I've bypassed the effects. I'm thinking I might try running the track through some kind of maximizer program and boost the levels that way. Yeah it'll sound super compressed but short of rerecording it I don't really know what to do. To be honest it was only ever meant to be a demo as I'm actively looking for more session work now and I needed something on my myspace pretty sharpish! I'm trying to make a go of the "pro musician" thing while I've still got the chance to do it.
5. The best look for a jazz bass in my opinion. My next bass will defo have a maple board. I love the way that the new mex fenders have the option of a maple board too, now its an affordable look for your bass rather than you having to fork out for an american made bass.
6. BTW Cheers for the comment wotnwhy!
7.
If you give us some info about what you are recording with and how, we may be able to help you with your sound problems
I'm using a pretty crappy pc (2.8ghz, 1 gig ram etc) and a line 6 studio gx with ableton live 7. The real bitch was the fact that when I bough the line 6 it didn't come with a manual for ableton, they didn't account for numpties like me knowing virtually nothing about recording! Any advice is much appreciated matey. Ad
8. Hey guys, Ok been getting to grips with ableton now and I've come up with this little tune. http://www.myspace.com/adambassman2008 Known issues are the volume (way too quiet but i can't seem to get the volume up withouty peaking everything!) and the solos (they're generally a bit crap!) I know the solos are just a case of me sitting down and working out what I'm actually gonna play rather than trying to do it on the fly but any advice on getting the track volume right? Cheers guys and gals! Ad P.S. I've added a new mellow down tempo tune too! P.P.S. I've changed the solos ever so slightly on both of them so they're a bit less er... crap!
9. I've spent a little time tweaking the pickup height but it hasnt seemed to make much of a difference. Mind you that is at bedroom volume, I'll try it at the jam tomorrow night and see how it sounds. If it's still a bit weak I might try messing with some eq and compression options.
10. Very kind words man, thank you! On the points you made I do very much agree The keys player asked me if I would try a slap line in the tune, I wasn't sure about it either and after watching this back I probably wont do it again as I too think its way better finger style. The bari player hasn't been playing that long if I'm not mistaken so massive kudos to him for having a go, he's used to notated stuff so jamming is a totally new concept to him. He's definately got the lungs to get some decent notes out of that thing though! The business of the band being too busy or too bare is basically what happens in every jam situation where you have a lot of musicians who dont know each other that well and are all of varying ability. A few of us from the jam are setting up a fusion type band which will be cool, we'll be tackling some Weather Report and Chick Corea classics and we'll also be doing some of our own stuff. It's still in concept stages at the moment, should be getting off the ground in the next month or so when everyone's free to get into it! Hopefully we'll be able to get in the studio with it fairly soon! Thanks again for the encouraging words mate! Ad
11. Check out David Fiuczynski's guitar solo on this vid, just awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-HHG5B4GZs
12. I'd agree on the price of the lessons, I charge £22.50 an hour which is basically the going rate round here. Some of the schools and music shops charge more like £25 to £28 an hour. Also when I do any teaching for The Rock Project I make £22.50 an hour. It's not a bad wage but only if you can get the hours which unfortunately is really tough cos kids bassically just want to play guitar or drums and as soon as you get a beginner bass student they quit when they get their first blister!
13. Bloody hell look at that! Cracking basses these, didnt realise it was the old style one (the newer ones are cack imho). Good luck with the sale on this one mate, someones gonna get a corker of a bass for peanuts here! Ad
14. I've already emailed him about lessons! Tbh I'd just like the opportunity to chat to him about his style and concept of melody, I can't fault it! He can do all the crazy fusion stuff when he needs to but he has this natural ability to play just whats needed where some other big name players would go nuts and kill the vibe. For example Tom Kennedy would suit the technicality of the band but I just can't dig his solos (and I really have tried to!) As Janek said a few years ago on bassworld "what happened to the groove Tom?!" I love the stuff with Anthony Jackson too, if I'm not mistaken he's on "Another Mind" and "Brain" which are both superb albums and I think he makes an appearance on "Spiral" too. To go one further than urb he's also got 2 NYC Sadowsky's, a Ken Smith Black Tiger and a Yamaha EUB type thing! I think it's already been said but it's alright for some lol! Ad
15. Hey guys, These were recorded at a local jazz jam I go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O7JpSIIpTI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Kpl8_71fI Enjoy! Ad
16.
I really love some of her tunes and her ridiculous playing, but I'm not so sure about her band. They're definitely very 'Berklee' to my ears - technically very good, but they seem a bit characterless to me. Would still like to see live though!
I know exactly what you mean about the Berklee thing. I've noticed that they all tend to have this "thing" about them although I'm not exactly sure what that "thing" is! XB26354, I noticed they're playing live and I'm a tad gutted as I only found out yesterday so I won't be able to go! If I'd have known about it I'd have rearranged my life in order to see them, sucks!
17. Ok so whos heard of Hiromi? If you haven't, sort it out man! Some really incredible and intense jazz fusion with some amazing players. Obviously my interest in the band came from Tony Grey, what a player!!! My problem with the Berklee graduates is that after watching/listening to them I just want to go to Berklee! Anyone got a spare 20 odd grand a year for the course fees that they wouldnt mind passing on to me?! I'll take a cheque!!! This should give you a pretty good idea of what they're about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00fKuTD52gQ Enjoy! Ad
18. Jean Baudin is the player who got me into two handed tapping. Most people don't know about him and just think of Wooten when you talk about tapping on the bass so I dutifully direct them to some of Jean's youtube videos! Love Nuclear Rabbit, nice and mad just the way I like it! Cheers Ad
19. Thanks for all the replies on this guys, some great tips here. I think the main issue with the string is that it's just not as punchy and defined as the rest of the strings. Probably a pretty drastic measure but what do you reckon a new set of pickups would do? I mean the theory I have in my head is that a higher quality set of pickups instead of the stock yamaha alnico's would make a considerable difference. I don't want to mess about with the preamp as it's really good as it is, I'm just thinking about maybe getting a pair of 5 string EMG's and seeing if it improves things. With regards to winding the string down to the bottom of the peg I usually do that with my strings anyway. It does make a difference but the definition on the B string is still a bit weak. Ad
20. Hey guys! Ok so the other day I'm playing around with my fender jazz and I just can't get the sound I'm looking for. Me thinks it's time to do some tone searching. So I pull out an old Yamaha BB605, restring it and get to jamming. The tone is simply gorgeous except for one fatal flaw, the low B sucks! Buying a new bass is simply not an option at the mo so I'm looking for some cheap suggestions to improve my B string's responsiveness (is that even a word?!) I tend to play with the bridge pickup soloed and I like a tight and punchy sort of "jaco if he was playing a Fodera" sort of tone. Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere in the forum, I did a few searches and couldn't find anything. Much appreciated peeps Ad
21. I'm also open to trades on smaller cabs, anything like a 2x10 or a 1x12 as long as it can handle at least 300 watts and it's pretty decent.
22. Ok after a bit of deliberation I'm prepared to split these. It's more the cab I need to shift as I can use the head with a smaller cab. Had a look on the gallery website and they have a second hand one for £550 so I guess I'm looking for about £320 for the cab. Like I said if the cab sells I'll keep the head. Any interest? Neo 4x10 for £320? Cheers Ad

Jazz clip

Thats a class intro there matey!
24. In some senses I'm inclined to agree with you. A lot of the stuff I've done in the studio was through a DBX 386 mic preamp straight into the desk, one of the nicest studio tones I've ever had! I've also used an ART Nightbass which is a really cool piece of kit but a bit fancy if you just want a bog standard bass tone. Most of the magic of a bass tone is done in the eq when the engineer is mixing down if you ask me.
