1. The Spector is very refined; in my case I want something simpler, for my Luddite needs Still, GAS provides some variety in life - we'd be content and happy if not for it
2. As per the above, Mrs Pikeman had a busy weedend - delivering me an 400W Hartke head, whilst on her way past York. Communications were great throughout and Pikeman was great to deal with - and huge thanks to both Mr and Mrs Pikeman for the courier duties, which were a blessed relief, as I had to run off to the studio immediately afterwards! Recommendation from me, deal with in confidence
3. Haha, we all want the Jazzes - that one seems like the card to be holding in the trade market. Unless you want a Spector for it? Technically, it is a Jazz... by virtue of the pick-ups at least
4. Beautiful bass, Col - have a bump.
5. I don't think you'd be able to tell, unless you had your nose to the board. You can barely feel them whilst playing, unless you're really looking out for it. A (very) cheap compromise to finding someone to route the fingerboard; but, I'll admit, not for all tastes.
6. No, no. Each to their own, and it's your call. Now if you were dressed like the child catcher whilst you said it...
7.
I should add that there's no way in Hell any other bands are getting their mitts on my basses. Not sure why this requirement is stated when you're so careful of your bass and self critical after the potential consequences.
What? You wouldn't let someone have a noodle if they were admiring backstage? A 45 minute set would be a different question, but am happy to let people look - and I'm sure we've seen your Grabber doing the rounds at a bass bash. Same thing, no? As sod's law would have it, the Gibson shipped a string this afternoon, mid-studio. Topical question, as I had the moment of panic wondering if I'd f***ed it. You might all be right about just living with it, as I think I knew the answer before I started. Good to hear commentary on the Epis, as gives a route to look down. Thanks chaps.
8. I've been continuing to practice my reading. I'm still a huge distance from being able to sight read and play at the same time - I still can't sit with a score and play through in one. But I'm pleased I'm able to read and bumble through bits of it and gradually get it, without resorting to tab or other references. It's f***ing hard though. I'm thinking I might need to admit that I am 'music blind', in the way some people are numbers blind - it's required an effort out of all proportion to similiar activities. When I opened my first lesson book it was a feeling akin to when I casually picked up one of our actuary's manuals. A heady feeling of science and WTF?!?
9. One of my best basses, in terms of sheer playing enjoyment, is my Charvel - which is the lightest by some distance. It's all in the design, and some can make their weight work - others can't. I didn't mind it so much, but slipped a disc last year, and now it's a real concern.
10. I know this has likely been done to death... ... but, for context, the band like the Grabber sound; I've been asked to bring it along to rehearsals, gigs and recording. Fine, basses are there to be played; but, we had a small accident the other day and the paintwork took a ding. I'm a little precious about it. It's a 1976, and I've got it into good shape. I don't want to lose that now. And I've got the kind of personality where I go and punish myself for little things like that. So, if the sound is right, is there a more economical way of achieving it? Something I wouldn't mind dinging, letting other bands try, spilling beer on; without kicking myself for days afterwards. Thoughts? Predominantly I've been playing Jazzes alongside this.
11. Needs pics
12. Brilliant
13. Sorry for the shoddy photo, but they came good in the end! Knowing how to apply them I think I could do a better job next time - it's all in the alignment! But they went on easy enough, and it's only with your nose against the fretboard you'd know any different.
14.
I only look at the fingerboard when I'm learning stuff. At gigs I don't, as I'm usually on jug-watch.
Yours, or... ?
15.
I cant believe what anyone could possibly dislike about fingerboard edge leds? They are a fantastic help on a dark stage, no one can really see them apart from you, (so they arent for show at all), and cost about £400 if you have them done by the best in the business. If they are going to be done properly by your chap, dont think twice!
Isn't there a certain element of cool attached to them, no? I couldn't see them working for me, in a room full of sweaty punters throwing Red Stripe around, whilst playing my bass near my knees. But I think they could add a little added extra to other occasions.
16. Very nice, Juju. Were they all shortscale, as I'm thinking the EB3L was long... or somesuch! Definitely on the list of things to own when the numbers come in
17. I think it depends on how high you wear your trousers.
18. Yeah - is it best to drop them on an e-mail? If so, can you PM an address.
19.
Hmm, that's nice too ... anyone played one of these?
I would love to know, also. I can afford a little out of the petty cash, and these were sounding reasonable in the few clips I'd managed to catch.
20. Long shot, but some kind of deal involving my Spector?
21.
Wow, I'm old, dirty and battered and from the 60's Look better when I have had a wash and brush up........ Perhaps Fenders are better left alone and their players should have the treatment?
No, no Blademan - you've just got the mojo! Don't brush up or replace any of your original parts, or you'll devalue yourself
22. A la...
23. I like the silverburst, very nice. I've always admired the Aria Tab66 too, liking the look of the twin pick-up config.
24. Is it less to do with the age, but more to do with how dirty/battered it is?
