Isn't that personal experience bias? A decent amp to you, could be wildly different to someone else. It's also dependent on far you want to go shaping or "cleaning" your sound, you could set a HPF to circa 40hz the fundamental frequency of your E string or to 60hz just below the 1st harmonic frequency of the low B. Apologies for the thread derailment.

I've bought from Will on two occasions and will do again I'm sure, compared to my experience of other bass specialist shops or UK based instrument retailers, BB or Thomann is my preferred route. It's all opinion when you strip everything else away, for me personally I appreciate being given the time of day, rather than being treated like a potential transaction only.

I'm looking at using the Darkglass Harmonic Booster to add more mid bite to my overdrive sound, currently use a Rodenberg LDP Deluxe in the HPF loop of a Sine Effects X24 Crossover. Mainly I'd use it with my Rick in a Rock Covers Trio and my Spector 5 in a funk project. I'm trying to get more mids as the Rodenberg only has controls for treble and "deep" switch, I had thought about trying to use a Plexi drive pedal instead. I run the Rodenberg and the X24 at 18V if that is helpful to know. Anyone used it as like a gain stage or to add further EQ in front of a drive pedal? I'd be very interested in experiences and examples.

Usual rule of thumb is to go a gauge lighter than your preferred rounds. I felt the same with Dunlop flats, couldn't get them to work for me too much top end and not enough mid/body, tried GHS flats, they were too far the other way so I settled on La Bella, though I prefer the two heaviest sets to use on P basses (760FM 109-49 and 760M 110-52)

I've got one of their C24's (picked up second hand) and an X24 crossover and they are both great, Grant is very responsive to questions on instagram message too. He recently advised about running the X24 at 18V to match my drive pedal headroom at 18V, not understanding tech all that well, it was very much appreciated.

In my originals band - I have more input from a rhythm and chord change standpoint (knowing the most theory) than anything else. But no real melody or actual "song" input if that makes any sense.. -

Having said that, as soon as my new bass reached these shores, it has now been "misrouted" no fault of Thomann themselves mind. Another day of anxious waiting. -

Try your best to enjoy it, music is supposed to be fun, especially with added pressure of doing it for your brother. Thinking back to my first gig, refusing to look up from the neck or out into the audience (when I finally did all I could see was feet) did I enjoy it? No, don't be like me 🙂 Good luck, if you do decide to do it again it does get easier!

I maintain the 6 string/s made for Tye Zamora is the "weirdest" Fender, doesn't remotely resemble anything else they've ever produced.

Of course with my luck neither fit precisely but the one made to my measurement was closest and was able to be secured enough to use. Likely I will have to enlarge the holes at both ends so that the screws can sit as they should. Its been a long process, fine motor skills are not my friend (with a digital calliper at least) but I'd highly recommend Tim at Zero Mod if anyone else has a need for a scratchplate mounted thumbrest on their bass.

One of the nicest and most chill gigs I've played is a Sunday afternoon set at a members only club. Nice change from midnight/1am finishes.

Update to this, the thumb rests (one to my measurement and one to what Tim felt it should be) arrived just now, no customs charges or any extra which I was very pleased about. Now just got to wait until I'm home from work to see which one fits!

I wanted to be a guitarist when I was 13/14 after watching my Uncle's (he's a drummer) cover band play, my Dad managed to put me onto bass knowing that with hands like mine (large) and reduced dexterity in my right hand the chances of me being able to play more than a few open chords was very slim. So Christmas came and there was Peavey Milestone III waiting for me, not long after that I was unable to walk for 6 weeks following surgery, so what else was there to do than learn to play. Since then music has been my life and my life line where other things and people have come and gone and many a dark moment has come my way, I made the decision to play every style possible that was available to me - I've gigged everything from music for amateur panto, music hall on an EUB, right through to classic heavy metal and everything in between. My favourite bass has always been a P (I have 4) but with the current collection standing at 10, the latest being a Rick 4001V63 I'm very fortunate to have such a variety of sounds available. The one thing I have never gotten on with is a fretted jazz bass, fretless jazz bass I love to play but a fretted just sounds wrong when I play it, oh and there was the one time I (unknowingly) said that Musicman basses are too aggressive sounding for me, in front of the UK Rep sponsoring a competition in which I'd gotten down to the final five...

As @itu says start with the cheapest options first i.e. checking set up, amp settings, strings etc and see if that has any improvement on the sound.

I've wired up my pedalboard the wrong way round at gigs more than once and panicked when there was no sound.. Tried to tune a G up to a C once when I wanted a Wooten tenor bass..

Talking of Bartolini Mk1's, reminded me of the Cort A6 I bought many years ago when I'd decided I'd gotten as much as I could out of a 4 string (which was obviously not the case). The combo of the Mk1's, the active preamp and the realisation that I really didn't have a use for 6 strings long term meant I sold it after a year..

Last set of Picato strings (flats) I ordered from Strings Direct (5 or so years back) appeared to be re badged D'Addario Chromes. Disappointing as the set I'd ordered before then were made by Picato themselves, no silks, no gaps between windings.
