1.
So... Easiest way to adjust the truss rod please?... (Just access, I'm used to adjusting from either the head or with plenty of heel access)
Just get a Cruztools Cheater Driver - http://www.cruztools.com/cheaterdriver.html I got one to do minor adjustments on my 62 AVRI Jazz (same truss access as the Flea), but I haven't needed to take the neck off since!
  2. Possible stupid question, and sounds kind of counter-intuitive, but have you tried them the other way round (i.e. Sansamp into B3K)? I know that when I had a B3K, and now with my RAT-based distortion, they worked/work better with a preamp driving them. With the preamp after, it always put a bandwidth on them which basically made them sound less good!...
  3. Lovely bass! Glad they've added the separate battery compartment too, is that a new thing? On my old Euro 4 you had to take the back plate off to get to the battery, which was a pain in the a**e!

    Boss TU-3S

How do you switch it on/off, or is it just on all the time!? I think that'd annoy me.
  5.
The pedal that dissappointed me the most recently was the Darkglass VMT. With my set, up it sucked. Shame really as with all the hype and love going around about it I thought it'd be amazing. I moved it on pretty quickly.
Definitely the Darkglass B3/7K and VMT. Don't think I've seen opinion divided quite as much for any other pedal-maker recently. Seems to be either die-hard fans or total haters, and nothing inbetween...I, for one, am firmly in the latter camp! ;-)
  6. AVRI 62 Jazz - 9.5lbs 79 Stingray - 11.2lbs 75 Jazz - 12.6lbs Play the 75 Jazz the most
  7.
Why's that Kev? You wouldn't buy it, OK fine, each to their own.. Here's why I bought it - Not that I have to justify spending my own money on whatever I want to anyone, but when they brought these out, my first thought was if they had done it with black blocks and binding, I'd be moving heaven and earth to get one. That's why this one sparked my interest. I did my research, got written confirmation from Fender that it's all genuine parts, with the only difference between a 'to spec' one and this one being the different blocks and binding. So I get what I wanted in the first place, straight from the factory. I'm happy. It didn't cost you anything. No need to rain on my parade.
Well said.
  8. Looks like a proper mid-70s Jazz Bass to me, going by the colour scheme and bullet truss rod. Not a reissue.
  9. Are the dark wood embellishments removable?
  10. My 62 AVRI Jazz has a couple of similar chips, and that's nitro. Also, the V prefix on the neck plate serial number checks out. Guess that could be a replacement, but quite unlikely!
  11.
Folks, the guy who bought this bass in January received two bits of good news the same week, the first was his first Wal, the second his first child! So, aware of imminent financial constraints, he offered it back and I, missing it, bought it back
Turns out the worries about financial constraints were quite well founded!... If it weren't the case though, I'd have this back in a heartbeat! Incredible bass, beautiful sound and feel, really one of the best basses I've played. I want it back, but I can't afford it Are you sure you want to let this go again Chris!?...
  12.
Yep, my 77-ish P (like Discreet's, a blondie) is on the heavy side but it's lovely, plays and sounds great.
My 75 Jazz weighs a ton too, but it's the best sounding, growliest Jazz I've ever played! Apart from a slightly too big bridge pickup route it's really well made too, and the neck hasn't moved since I bought it last year! P.s. Just to make matters worse, I've played that blue 73 in the Gallery a couple of times and it's lovely ;-)
  13. Wow Never usually into the look of Flea Basses, but this one's stunning!
  14. Incredible example, it looks totally mint! Sorely tempted...Sorry to be the one to ask, but what's the weight?
  15.
I'm probably being a bit dense... but what are those great big screws on the front of the bass between the bridge and pickup?
They're where the mutes would have been attached originally, and someone has put those screws in to cover up the holes.
  16.
Questions for the collective. Should I move the Blueberry in front of the COG? It'll be on most of the time in this setup...
Not the same as the Blueberry, but similar in an amp - style overdrive kind of way...I used to use my SFT, and now use my COG Knightfall before the TK-421-X, and it drives it really nicely. I now keep the Knightfall on all the time, and kick on the TK when I need a gnarly, grindy boost!
  17.
The tele would be a good balance but a LP and and SG is a tough wall of sound to get thru, generally. IME unless the gtrs are really disciplined.
Hmmm, the SG player plays with amp overdrive and not full-on distortion, so I wouldn't have thought it should cause an issue... There's an inherent "scoop" to the Aguilar 70s though, without doubt. I recorded them straight into logic, and compared with recordings of the stock '75s, Nordstrand and BKs, and it's clear as day. Not saying they sound bad though, quite the contrary! Just an aspect of their character to factor in...
  18.
Incidently, what gtrs did the two play..?
One an Am. Standard Tele and Les Paul through a Fender Twin, the other SGs through a JCM 800.
  19. I had the AG4j70s in my 75 Jazz. On their own I thought they sounded great - really tight bass and growly highs, but found I was getting lost and having to boost some midrange in any band that had more than one guitar...They have quite a scooped sound, and a bit lacking in the low mids I reckon. Tried Nordstrand 70s winds, but I've settled on Bare Knuckle PE Jazz for the minute. Great sounding pickups!
  20.
Alex, Musicman's setup instructions have changed slightly. They now recommend you drop the bass side of the pickup right down to the pickguard. Scroll down a bit on this link: http://www.music-man.com/faq I've set up mine following that and is does help with evenness across the strings. On the front to back, can't really help as my strings are pretty much parallel to the bass body. I have a low action and my frets have been dressed down over the years (by an over enthusiastic tech) , so not as tall as new.
Ah, thank you!
  21.
I angle my pickup close to the G and further away from the E to try and even out the sting volume. Im using an Aguilar pickup with flat pole pieces but still find it has a better balance than the original pu, even though i still angle it. I will take a pic and stick it up in a bit
Thanks mrn1989! I do that too, top to bottom, but here I'm specifically asking about whether anyone angles their pickup towards the fretboard (front to back) so it follows the line of the strings when you're looking down at it (i.e. when you're looking at the pickup from the top, it leans towards the fretboard and away from the bridge). Do you do this with your pickup, or keep it straight?
  22. Hi all, I've been adjusting the pickup height on my Stingray, and usually go by the factory settings using my 6" metal ruler (i.e. 8/64 bass side, 6/64 treble side) and adjust from there... As the Stingray pickup's quite wide however, I've been slanting it slightly towards the fretboard (so front to back, not top to bottom) so it follows the line of the strings, and is at an angle to the body when you look down at it from the top. I just wondered if this is the correct thing to do, and whether other Stingray players do the same, or if the pickup should be in line with the body, i.e. straight and not at an angle? Would appreciate some advice. Please do let me know if this doesn't make sense, and you need some further clarification on what I mean!... Cheers, Alex
  23.
I guess it's a weird one but it's not going to make a huge difference unless they're really canted over.
Nah, they're not, and they sound great. It's still annoying me though ... Gonna get hold of some new pickup foam, and see if that makes a difference.
