Genuinely pretty good layman's description of a compressor there.

Really tempted by this! However, perplexed by the fact that there are seperate outputs for the drive and deep channels, and no way to blend them? Am I being stupid and is there a simple way around this?

[/quote] You generally get a clearer, fatter sound from them IME, though taps/clicks/other sympathetic sounds that playing generates tend to be emphasised somewhat...The classic test is to put the guitar through a reverb or echo pedal, and shout into the pickup(s). If you can clearly hear your voice in the trail or repeats, you've got microphonics going on!

Mine came with microphonic pickups which, by the sound of it, is the case with the one you've tried. Sounded great when I tried it out (and subsequently bought it!), but squealed like a banshee through a loud amp before I'd even added any additional gain...Stuck some Bare Knuckle PE pickups in it, and now it's just perfect! I'd never sell it.

Isn't the Tone Hammer pretty much just an OBP-3 in pedal format, but with sweepable mid control and an overdrive circuit? Maybe get one of those and see if you like how it sounds, without having to carve your bass up!?

I use the Bass Whammy after my Sub Phatty to do this kind of thing, and it works great! Definitely octave pedals BEFORE the Whammy. I find the Whammy doesn't sound cheesy at all if it's fed more of a gritty signal. You may have been given that impression by all the guys on YouTube, doing w***y slap on a Warwick through the octave up setting?
