A Precision with an East P-Retro in it? http://www.east-uk.c...ro/p-retro.html
Done that and nowhere near as versatile as a G&L. That said I would have to endorse an ACG Graft. Alan can position the pickups in the correct Fender "sweetspot" and the 4-Way rotary is great. A truly handbuilt bass for less than £1000.

My first thought would be a G&L L2000 or L2500. Does a pretty good P-Bass, J Bass amd Stingray impersonation but with 36 different combinations of switches etc, it does have a sound of it's own. I always considered mine to be the "swiss army knife" of basses. I tried both the American and Tribute versions and couldn't tell much difference for the price.
... collection only, wasn't it?
Certainly was. Picked it up on the way out to a gig, didn't even need to go out of my way. -
Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread
BassBunny replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
Just bought myself another Bass Collection. It was on eBay and didn't get a bid the 3 times it was listed. As it was local, I couldn't refuse. Bit of a mystery though. The serial number has rubbed off but a previous owner took the trouble to write it on the back of the control cavity cover. S/N is 000066, so that would put it it as a 2000 build and not one of the Japenese ones. Build quality is however every bit as good as my 1988 one. It weighs the same, within an ounce or so but no sign of where it was built. The bridge is a high-mass one, (just like a Gotoh 201), and although the machine heads are not stamped with Gotoh, they are identical to the ones on my 88 version. The pick-ups have SGC stamped on them. Completely different pre-amp to the 88, although equally rubbish and has exactly the same "blend" problem as my other Bass Collection had. All in all made up with the deal. It is absolutely mint and I got it with a brand new Gig-Bag, Guitar Stand, Strap and Dunlop Straplocks, so taking that into account, the bass owes me less than £100. Result. Here it is: -
They have also played for a number of other artists as their backing band.
One of them being Jess Roden who is one of my all time fave singers. His version of On Broadway, with The Meters in attendance, is awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB8BcBjMYoU

With the Function Band it would have to be either Ain't no Stoppin us Now (McFadden & Whitehead) or September (Earth Wind & Fire). With the get together once in a while Jazz/Fusion band, either Cold Duck Time (Al Jarreau version) or Cissy Strut (The Meters)
What cabs were you using it with? Have read reports that LM's are sensitive when using certain cabs at 4ohms (think it was SWRs?). If the actual impedence of the cabs is slightly under 4Ohms - apparantly some are - the heads would cut out. Either way, as its new return it for a replacement. HTH
It was EA Cabs if i remember correctly. Apparently 8 ohm EA Cabs are closer to 6 Ohms so 2 in Parallel and MarkBass heads do not like the 3 Ohms it sees.
Tecamp s/h values didn't climb that much after the famous Guitar Guitar Sell off
Probably because none came up F/S.
The new acg uber has xlr out and is mega nice!
Beat me too it Andy. I guess you would need some sort of Line Driver with an XLR out, so does that mean the bass has to be active, (ruling out just shoving it in a Fender Jazz)? I suppose a passive circuit as in passive Di boxes would work.
how's the fit of your cover ? Mine is slightly too long so touches the floor on the front & sides,i may return mine so they can shorten it a tad.
When I ordered my cover I mentioned the wheels and asked if the cover tapered towards the back to allow the wheels to move freely. This is the answer I got back: "The cab cover has cut-outs for the wheels at the back so should be fine." So I am assuming yours doesn't have the cut-outs?
.... oh and a cover from roqsolid (I'll order another if the GAK cab actually turns up)
By any chance did you check with Roqsolid about the "taper" on the cover to stop fouling the wheels?
-
Just gave them a call about my order. Confirmed I am on the list to get one ASSUMING they get all they have asked for. Apparently Fender distributed a list to all retailers of Genz gear with what is available and each retailer would have put their bid in at pretty much the same time. If they get all they have asked for, result, if not some of us could be disappointed.
I'm guessing somewhere along the line someone is potentially losing money, but selling a LOT of stock to clear up.
I spoke to Mark at Bass Direct a while back about the Genz offers and his version of events is this. Fender bought Genz, (along with some other soon to wound up brands), but did not put much budget into advertising. Sales dropped and in an attempt to get some money back they are just clearing out stock at stupid prices. I am assuming this is stock they inherited as part of the GB purchase, so what the items cost to manufacture is pretty irrelevant. This could then result in th brand then being dropped. I think it unlikely BD will price match as the cabs are not actually in stock, the first condition in any company price-matching.
Very wise! I've just thought of something, we could potentially group order a load of NX2 212T covers from Roqsolid...they are about £50.00 normally.
I like your thinking. I'm in.

Just jumped on one. Apparently they are not due in until Monday and there are only 5 on the way. After that, who knows.
-
That's the arse fallen out of the NX2 212T market then, Jeez !
You'll have to keep yours now then Pete.

Spot On. We only do Covers and this year have done 3 self-promotion gigs and made a good wage out of all of them. Could be the way to go as long as the venue is right.
-
Think this has come up a couple of times. Fender are dropping Genz so a big clear out at GAK and Bass Direct

I am interested in an eBay item, but if successful it is collect only from Faversham in Kent. Also Cash on Collection. Anyone able to help by picking up for me and wrapping it up for collection. I would be happy to reinburse any expenses. Not saying I will be succesful, but won't even bid if it is a non-starter.

I've done it. All the 4's have now gone and only 5-Strings in the stable. That said my Fender Jazz sat in a case for about 3 years untouched before I sold it. That was the last one.
De solder the pickups, remove the entire thing, and then throw in one of KiOgons solderless looms. That way you can just pull it out and throw the active EQ back in if needs be. That's the simplest way of doing things, and what i did with my Ibanez. Liam
Beat me to it. +1 for this way forward.
