1.
Fair enough, I meant no offence, you pitched it very differently in your previous post, e.g "not listening to any of the points i am concerned about", "it will be left to me to set up when we do get it" etc - that didn't sound like your opinion (as the one who would be left to set it up e.g the actual user of the kit) was being respected at all, hence my suggestion that you just get whatever you're comfortable with and use that. Good luck
No offence taken at all. Sorry if it sounded like that. I explained it poorly previously. My fault. JTUK- i agree. I think in going the route we are, we are making sacrifices. But again, they're all putting their trust in the engineer. Which is fair enough really. He has 10 years experience of it being his only job. I cant really blame them. Hopefully it'll all work out and i'll be able to get to grips with it relatively quick. A good sound is obviously important, but how important it is to "Joe Public" Do they notice the intricacies, or do they just enjoy the songs aslong as they can hear the singing? I do wonder.....
2. I dont know anything about Jazz as a genre, but i was impressed by all 4 of them. Same goes with the acoustic players.
3.
Respectfully, that doesn't sound like a particularly long-lasting band dynamic.
Must disagree with this. We aren't strangers who have formed a band. We are all friends, some who studied music together, who thought we would form a band because we have jammed together for years, whilst playing in seperate bands. We found ourselves all to be free to form our own band, so went ahead with it. Surely the fact its a "democracy" rather than a "dictatorship" is a good thing. I might not agree with them, but i respect their decision. Im not necessarily right, and can't assume to be. May not have been completely clear, and thats my fault. Everyone helps with the setup. As in bringing things in, running cables, stacking cabs etc. But i will be left to set the mix. The singers have a working knowledge of the basics (of the mixer we have now) so will probably look to gleen the same level of competancy. Dan Dare, i agree, and that was my point to the other members. It might be a brilliant mixer, but that might only stand true to someone who has a better knowledge of it than i do. In all fairness though, our sound engineer friend has offered to give me tuition on the mixer. He said i can go to some gigs where he works and watch how he sets up, and hes offered to come and set up for us until i think i have the hang of it. For no money. Cant say fairer than that, i just worry it may take me a while. On the whole, im a relatively quick learner, so i hope it wont.
4. Thats a fair point, i just think there are . . . better suited people?
5.
From our range it sounds like you might be best served with a Retro Two10. It'll certainly be loud enough!
I can vouch for this. It is unbelievable! Volume is not an issue and i play in a 6 piece band where the guitarist uses a 400W valve Peavey head, linked to a 4 X 12 cab
6. IMO the 13 year old shouldnt of even got through the first round, as people have previoulsy said. Have to agree with the Huey Morgan comment too!! The other judges showreel highlighted some nice playing, on his showreel he is standing in the middle of the stage playing barre chords
7. Yeh i agree with you Douglas. I have made my point known, but what can i do? The desk they are opting for is the X18. Flight cases have been agreed on so at least that is one thing. Wont be getting it until next month, but yes ill let you know how it all goes.
8. Well im sorry to say i've been outvoted on this We had a band meeting on this subject last night. I took forward the views expressed here, of seperates, with an active speakers and passive mixer etc, but i may aswel not have. As far as anyone else in the band were concerened the decision should go to a sound engineer who is a friend of the band. I'm well aware he has more knowledge of all this than i do, but i do worry that the setup he has recommended is not ideally suited for us. The main issue being no one else in the band really has any idea of how a P.A works, so they are taking his word on it, and not listening to any of the points i am concerned about, also it will be left to me to set up when we do get it. He has recommended a Behringer digital mixer. I've no idea how to use one of these to their full potential and i can see problems on the horizon here. There are other issues, but i dont think theres much point in going into them. As a 6 piece band, i was out voted 5-1 . Democracy rules
9. Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, i could take it off your hands
10. Yeh ive watched it. As you said, more about the playing than their backstories. Which was my main concern when i first heard about it. It is on Sky Arts, and was available for "catch up" last time i checked. Well worth a look. Although i have disagreed with one or two they have chosen to go through, i've really enjoyed it.
11.
You'd be better off trying to get something second hand
Yep, thats the plan. Thanks everyone for their opinions and experiences. It seems seperates seem the most popular way to go. I can definitely see the added benefit of being able to upgrade individual parts as and when we need to.
12. A lot of good points to consider. The size thing isnt so much of an issue as we do have a van. Well, our singer has a van anyway! I think the digital desk option will be a bit too pricey for us at present, but maybe something we will look at in the future. What i need is a local expert to show us how best to set up i think..... Anyone here up for the challenge? Wouldn't expect it the service free of charge of course
13. Thanks everyone. Yeh i have been looking at the mixing desk, but havent pulled the trigger as we havent decided 100% on what we want
14. We are in the process of looking for a new P.A system. As a 6 piece motown/soul band with keys and a small brass section. We have a good idea of the kind of set up we are going to get. I just wanted to get a few opinions on what you think would work better for us..... We have about £2500 and are planning on getting two tops and two subs, with two monitors. The bit im stuck on, because i dont know enough about the subject tbh, is whether to get a powered mixer, or a mixing desk with a seperate power amp. What are your experiences? What are the benefits/cons? Is there a different set up you would recommend? Any advice appreciated. If this is in the wrong section, feel free to move it. Thanks
15. Stunning. Replica of the bass i use. An amazing bass, whoever buys it will be extremely happy. If i could afford it, i'd have it GLWTS
16. Started playing at 14, and was "self taught" until i was 18. Thought i was good enough and didnt need lessons. Had my first lesson at 18, and it opened my eyes to how much i had left to learn. Had lessons with Jon Caulfield in Cardiff once or twice a month until i was about 26, and i'd still be going today if it wasnt for work and family commitments. My only regret is I wish id started earlier, when i would've had more time to practice.
17.
Get one of these BTW. I have two and they are a bit good.
Agreed. I only have one, and it is immense.
18.
I suppose we should be grateful we don't live in China.
I've only been once. Won't be going again!! Could not believe what i was seeing/hearing, and could not believe no one had warned me about it!!!!
19.
This is quite often the cause of cramps, as well as playing on an empty stomach and not warming up in advance of a gig or practice session, with gentle stretches.
There is no proven cause of cramp. There are some who believe it to be caused by dehydration, or lack of salts, or over fatigue etc. But as for definitive proof.... there is none. People will advise all the things you've just said, because lets face it, they aren't going to do you any harm.
20. Just sold an amp to Danny Communication was swift. Payment was super quick. I forgot to post the power lead (doh) and he was very understanding! Dont hesitate to deal with Danny, he's a good guy
21.
For me Jay Bratten stole it. The rest was so so. I get what they were trying to do, but it needed a stronger (maybe gospel) drummer and more organic feel.
Exactly what i thought when i watched it. Jay was classy though. Would've died on its arse without him IMO
22. Looks incredible. Congrats!!
23. I have two basses. One has been with me for a long time, and i dont envisage it going anywhere. The other is swapped continuously. Like Lozz says, its good fun!
24. Just completed a trade deal with Stuart. Second transaction with him. Both trouble free. First message was in the morning, by 9pm, i had met him, swapped basses and got home in time for tea. Cheers mate
25. Just concluded a swift transaction with Geoff. The amp came in a well packaged box, and communications were great throughout. Really happy! Cheers Geoff
