I have, made a winder from an old printer motor and a mechanical counter from an old reel 2 reel tape. Made a few DB pickups but found it really fiddly, failing eyesight didn't help either. Its well rewarding though, when you get some noise from a few magnets and copper wire. Amazing how easy and low-tech the whole process is. Weekend Update, Got the Neck Pocket routed and holes drilled... Finished the headstock/neck carve, it needed centered a bit more. Not a 'volute' as such more a thumb stop at the first fret position. It also adds extra wood over the trussrod end which is not a bad thing on such a slim profile neck. Another day with the dreaded router and that's it done . Ian

Just to throw a spanner in ....depends on the trussrod, i have used dual rods that will pull back (tighten) when turned anti-clockwise and vice-versa.

Very interesting Pete, but for every neck that warps in any direction with no CF rods there is always a bass with none that doesn't. And that's the problem i have with this. I think Beer probably hit it in a nutshell....its hard to find a good reason NOT to put them in (especially if you are commercially building, cause everyone else IS) they certainly don't seem to do any harm. So onwards ... Slimmed down the headstock , it was a bit paddley. Made a start on carving the neck, slim profile... Taking the headstock quite far down the neck, i can retain a bit more wood.. Handy ref too ......it starts at 1st fret, (no lines on the fb) Made a neck pocket template ... With the neck itself as a former i use MDF and epoxy resin to make an exact copy. . Ian

Thanks guys much appreciated, i'll ponder over the weekend. I think the Warwick is the way to go but i'd rather gouge my own eyes out with a spoon than do any more routering than absolutely necessary (i hate using the damned thing). Ian

Thanks Jabba aaccchhhtt that's what i thought !! Would be a no brainer if they would sit flush. Still pondering at the moment though, thanks for the offer of a template (i might take you up on that yet ). I was looking at doing a string through for B&E strings and drilling the oles a good half inch BEHIND my usual bridge arrangement....might look a bit odd though so the warwick solution was another (neater) solution. I'll have a look around and see if there's any similar 5 string bridges that will sit flush although i doubt they will have the quality of the Warwick ones that u fellows use. Ian

That's my standard approach for scarf joint necks Andy, most of the stuff on the neck side is waste and is lost with the neck relief, the join is actually buried back in the headstock. I've been looking at those cracking Warwick Bridges you use on your builds, they would be good to use on this as i could set the string anchor back a fair bit from the bridge and use up the extra string length. But ...do they need to be routered in, would they be good sitting flush on a flat faced bass or would it all be sitting too high up and have a string/body clearance you could fly a plane through ? I don't have the cahoonahs to freehand the fiddly looking routing ... (unlike some ) Ian
